What should the strategy be?

The Sharks squad have arrived in Cape Town ahead of their two friendlies this coming week. Having seen a Force second-string outfit go down to the Stormers on Saturday, the Sharks face the prospect of a far stronger Aussie lineup in their first game on Tuesday. They then play the Stormers on Friday night. How should John Plumtree approach selection for these two games?

The coach has taken 28 players along on this trip and it would make sense to give each guy in the squad a decent opportunity to show what he’s capable of. The match on Tuesday will be an opportunity to face Super 14-strength opposition, but without knowing what sort of side Allister Coetzee intends to name for Friday’s match, the Sharks will need to take a bit of a gamble. Should they send their strongest side in against the Force, knowing that a virtual Super 14 intensity clash awaits (with the associated risk of injury) or should they save the A-side for the Stormers on Friday? Perhaps a mix-and-match strategy might serve the Sharks’ interests better, though?

To my mind, this series represents an opportunity to have a look at some combinations, in particular those that are new. We probably have a pretty good idea of what our first-choice tight five looks like, so why not rather mix things up a little and see how different players gel? Giving Craig Burden a full go at hooker, in the midst of the strongest scrumming pack we can field may yield some surprising results, while picking Bismarck in between a slightly weaker set of props will allow us to assess what impact this will have on his game in the loose. In the second row again, I feel we need to split up Steven Sykes and Johann Muller, allowing Alistair Hargreaves and Gerhard Mostert to show how well they can combine with the first choice players, if required.

We can, of course, write a book on the back-row options. As tempting as it is to let Keegan Daniel and Jacques Botes each have 80 minutes at openside, I feel that we’ll be missing a trick of we don’t give Jean Deysel a run in the number 6 jersey, to see whether the “dream trio” of Deysel, Willem Alberts and Ryan Kankowski really can work. Alberts must, of course, start a game at 8 as well and Botes and Daniel should each be given a half to see how well they complement the Alberts-Deysel combo.

The halfbacks are quite simple to sort out, with only two scrumhalves and two (well, one-and-a-half) flyhalves in the squad. There are only four possible combinations and each should, obviously, be given forty minutes to show what they can do. The centres again don’t offer too many permutations, although it remains to be seen where Luzuko Vulindlu is going to fit in. If he plays outside centre, which may well be his best position, then there’ll be a fair old merry-go-round as the coaches try to shoehorn everyone in. He may end up having to slot in on the wing, though, as Lwazi Movo is the only real outside back alternative in the squad to the old firm of Ndungane, Pietersen and Terblanche.

So here are the lineups I would pick – and to my mind, it really doesn’t matter which plays on Tuesday and which on Saturday. Neither could really be considered an A team or a B team and the emphasis needs to be on combinations and constructive attacking play, rather than just on results.

  • The sharks squad is a potent one, with this depth , you guys should go all the way, providing you score try’s. I still believe that was the Sharks biggest problem last year, it was a case of defence, not attack. Either of these teams could beat anybody on their given day!! To my mind the only thing missing is the whippet fetcher?? and questions about the flyhalf, I am not au fait with Pat Lambie but everybody is raving about him so maybe that will be okay. I have never been a Monty fan, but he is steady, but I think you ned more than steady to win the Super 14.

  • My 2 cents:

I won`t deny I`ve been one of the guys who raved about Lambie, but I must admit this might be a bit soon. However wasn`t it Naas who said . . . if you`re good enough you`re old enough?

I didn`t see the Force match this weekend but the reports I got from my stormer mates indicate the Stormers are in fine form.
I did point out that it probably was the Force`s ” wednesday ” side but of course there`s none so blind as those who don`t want to see LOL.

I have my reservations about these warm up matches. What if something happens to Terblanche?! We all know what he can do, I say only give him 40 minutes and then get him off the park. Rather give Lambie some more exposure, he needs everything he can get now . ..

Regarding the loose three, I`m a bit conservative. I won`t select the side without a recognised fetcher so I worry about the proposed Alberts, Kankow and Deysel combination. Obviously we`ve never seen them play together, but as I understand it, Deysel and Alberts play the same bruising kinda way and Kankow will look to play a little more loose, so who`s gonna secure possession? No use having a brilliant combination like this on paper, but when they run on, they have to defend all night cause we never have the ball.

But come on this is it guys. The moment we`ve been waiting for since That Saturday last year when we all got stuck with a fridge full of beer and nothing to celebrate!

    I`ll be at newlands Friday night . . .

  • apparently steve meyer is going to join the squad while “an undisclosed player” has to leave the squad, could this mean the GLRU have had it their way?

  • The way this Triangular Warm Up series is structured is a bit flawed. Hosts, the Stormers, get a full week to recover between games while the Sharks and Force plays two games in the space of a week. Considering that the Force had to fly 26 hours to play two warm up games of no consequence in less than a week is it any wonder that only one team showed up to play some rugby on the weekend? The Sharks, to my mind, will adopt a similar strategy. They simply cannot risk an injury in their backline although their forwards look awesome and ready for battle. On Friday the Sharks will probably get their hides tanned by the Stormers who will be riding high after enjoying a week’s rest and 18 000 people turning up to support them. Which just goes to show should you read anything into these warm up games?

  • ha ha ha. i loved all the baseless speculation in comments above. a simple case of one player arriving another leaving turns into a conspiracy theory. it is a simple case of the sharks needing time to how steve meyer or monty play and a backline player must make way. zuks had the worst season last year, yes even worse than strauss so he must head back. keep them coming. i love these theories.

taking nothing away from Stormers – I did not see the game but I am lead to believe it was very entertaining with all the tries.

However, it’s a warm -up and against the Force (without Giteau) so this is not exactly the opponent Stormers should be measuring themselves against.

I rather Sharks loose now than in the competition itself.

  • i personally would like to see the sharks start with their strongest combinations and change players in important positions to get a gauge of how the team plays with these changes. no point in playing a whole changed team. if there are problems there are too many variables to work out where the problem is.
