Lambie named at the back

John Plumtree has named a considerably stronger side to face the Stormers than the one that went down 26-0 to the Western Force on Tuesday night. In defiance of SARU and the Lions, Willem Alberts will start in the number 8 jersey.

In perhaps the most exciting development, though, young Pat Lambie has been named to start at fullback, the position in which he shone for the Sharks under 21 side last year. Regular wingers JP Pietersen and Odwa Ndungane join the 19-year-old in a wholly-changed back three.

Adi Jacobs has not yet recoeverd from a variety of pre-season niggles, meaning Waylon Murray will be afforded another opportunity to impress in the number 13 jersey. Stalwart Andries Strauss is at 12 and we’ve been led to beleive that his organisational and leadership abilities in a backline sorely lacking these has give him the inside track at this stage. Monty Dumond and Rory Kockott form an unchanged halfback pairing, although Charl McLeod and newcomer Steve Meyer will no doubt get their chance to impress in the second half.

It’s all change up-front too, with Jannie du Plessis being tried on the loosehead side in this encounter, next to his brother Bismarck and captain John Smit. Lineouts were a shambles for the Sharks on Tuesday and it is hoped that with du Plessis putting the ball in, this critical set piece will improve. New boy Gerhard Mostert starts with Johann Muller in the second row, while an injury to Jacques Botes sees Keegan Daniel handed a second start at openside flank. Daniel’s bigger twin, Jean Deysel, will again be at blindside and much attention will be paid to how well the latter combines with Alberts, another player who likes to go forward with ball in hand.

The non-availabilty of Jacobs and Botes means there will only be 12 players on the extended bench this time around, but expect Plumtree to do a fair amoun of mixing and matching in the second half as he tries to find those combinations that will give his team the best chance of being successful against the Chiefs in two weeks’ time.

  • Good team, just don’t like Andries. Way to cart and other than organisation in the backs he offers very little. Otherwise the side should be quite competitive. Maybe we should try zuks at outside for the last 20. We need some more depth at centre.

  • Lambie at 15 should be interesting ! Hear he has a great boot , just hope he dosn’t use it too often . He might be the guy to put some running into our backline and create some inspiration which is seriously lacking at the moment. WP backline should also test our defensive organisation pretty well but our heavies up front should be too good for them and our loosies should create quite a stir should they gel .

  • Happy to see Strauss at 12. Hate it when they play guys out of position. 12 and 13 require very different attributes and he certainly isn’t a 13!

  • Ok rob so Lambie starts at 15 and not at 10 where you were hoping to see him. I wonder what the Sharks plans are with him. We already have one of the best fullbacks in the country (Granted he is getting long in the tooth) and just signed Ludik who was impressive before he got injured. I just hope that we decide on a spot for him and keep him there. None of this moving players around. But if you say he played at 10 in school then maybe that would have been where to play him for this game. Just to see how he copes.

  • @Farlington (Comment 6) : prob is, they need to give Monty another chance behind a pack that actually wants to play… also need to see Meyer, so the opportunity for Lambie at 10 is limited.

Plum indicated in the press that he might want to try organise another warmup game somewhere along the line… maybe a chance for Lambie at 10 – and the new centres.

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) : Well time is running out and Plum will have to make sure that he is 90% ready after Fridays game. The only concern I have is wheter or not Lambie is ready for the intensity of the S14? Would a run in the CC not have been a better way of easing him into the team? O well just a thought.

  • What worries me more than our out-of-position props is that we lack some real speed in the backline. I don’t know if Lambie can burn it, but it looks to me like we only really have JP who might be able to catch the likes of Habana, Aplon, de Jongh, Pietersen or Juries.

However, the real objective is not to let him through.

  • I have been reading this site almost everyday for a year now and have seen how Strauss has been put through the wash as a waste of a Sharks jersey. He is not a speeding superstar but I think he puts in a lot of effort on defense and you know what you are getting when you select him. He has stepped up and given his all when selected only to be booted back to Vodacom where I agree he is more suited.
Give the guy a break and start speaking positively about the young prospects who we hope to solve our inside centre woes. Too much negativity surely has an impact on a player, I thought we were all supporters of a team, not supporters of individuals.

Strauss is a toy soldier!

  • Although players don’t select themselves, the glaring obvious can’t just be wished away. Nobody is questioning the players’ dedication or will, but this Sharks backline has a distinct Halsteadesque feel about it. Of course, I hope I’m wrong and get to eat my words, as I’ve done many times before! ;-)
