Ruan, Adi add options aplenty

I must say, I really wasn’t expecting to have Ruan Pienaar back in the Sharks selection mix ahead of this weekend’s game. Along with a (hopefully) fit-again Adi Jacobs, a lot of the doom and gloom surrounding the Sharks backline permutations is starting to lift.

The key here is to manage Pienaar conservatively, as I’m sure the coaches realise. He is going to be absolutely crucial to the success of the campaign and rushing him into action against the Chiefs if he’s not 100% ready will be counter-productive. That said, with only 6 home games this season, the Sharks really do need to pull out all the stops to ensure maximum points against the Chiefs. That’s right, guys – if we’re going to make the semis, we need a bonus point from every home game, starting with the first one.

I guess there will always be the temptation to play conservatively in the opener, particularly given that the high humidity in Durban will make handling difficult. Given that Pienaar is unlikely to be a starting option at this stage, John Plumtree will need start with either Monty Dumond or Steve Meyer at flyhalf, with the former perhaps the better option in the first half, provided he can use his boot to keep the Chiefs pinned in their own half. The Sharks have the pack to play ten-man rugby and do it well and perhaps this is the approach we should use against the Chiefs this weekend, given that the conditions are unlikely to favour expansive rugby.

We know which way the Chiefs will play and perhaps the conditions, coupled with their notoriously poor early-season form, will play right into the Sharks hands – providing plenty of mistakes on which the hosts must capitalise.

With Deon Carstens and Jacques Botes also both fit, the Sharks can select a bench literally packed with game-breakers and after softening the Chiefs up with a forward-orientated onslaught in the first hour, should look to open things up in the last 20, chasing the try bonus if it hasn’t already been scored. Players like Keegan Daniel, Craig Burden, Jacobs and Pienaar will be instrumental in making that happen.

Possible Sharks 22:

15 Terblanche, 14 Ndungane, 13 Murray, 12 Swanepoel, 11 Pietersen, 10 Dumond, 9 Kockott, 8 Kankowski, 7 Deysel, 6 Botes, 5 Muller, 4 Sykes, 3 Smit (capt), 2 B du Plessis, 1 Mtawarira
16 Burden, 17 Carstens, 18 Mostert, 19 Daniel, 20 McLeod, 21 Pienaar, 22 Jacobs

  • I would be really chuffed if we can put out this line-up. I just hope the Alberts sagga can be sorted out before tour because we will need as many ball carriers as possible considering the poor conditions often experienced on tour. If we get fined i will be really pissed, but hey hopfully sa rugby legends pay the fine? Lions are being a bunch of childish fools dragging the situation out. Sharks to win by 10-17 points. Lets hope so.

  • Ruan must not be rushed. If we want to score 4 tries we need to start with McLeod and Meyer.

  • rob, i don’t think kicking is going to work with the laws being blown correctly this year, so i’ll have to disagree with you again. by kicking the ball away you hand over possession you then have to defend, but have a lot less chance of winning the ball at the breakdown. so the attacking team can just keep attacking until they find a gap. where it does help the sharks is rory kockett. we all know he is selfish and gets tackled with the ball a lot. at least when he gets tackled or he has sold his mate, the loosies will be close enough to make sure the opposition cannot get the ball. so if ten is going to kick it has to be out.

  • @bergshark (Comment 10) : i`m with you there, but my only concern is to how strong Meyer`s kicking is. He had one attempt at newlands… nuff said. The reason i`m dragging meyer into the Macleod saga is that, with dumond, you have a pretty reliable place kicker. with meyer, Plum could be forced to play Kockett, for his kicking ability. Also adding that Lambie is play of the bench.

Geez, who would have thought a few years back that a kicker could be a problem at the sharks… with percy, butch, pienaar and francois steyn all in the team.

Adi for Swannie Meyer for Dumond Maybe Mostert to start think i prefer Mcloeod to Rory(better service) as well but its the better kicker and Steve is not as accurate as Rory thats how i think they will line up

  • I still maintain, Dumond just does not inspire a lot of confidence in the S14, hopefully Pienaar will stay injury free and will man up and play FH.

If the Sharks are planning on using Dumond, why did they bother gettin Meyer? With the new interpretaions of the law the defending team will have a hard time to get a hold of the ball, best advice is to keep the ball in hand and do whatever it takes to not to give it away…ie. no more mindless kicking.

  • @Megatron (Comment 34) : Urm if I can answer this one . ..

Ruan single handedly, okay maybe with Plums` advice as well, kicked us out of the semi final last year so based on that he shouldn`t be in the squad according to me. HOWEVER people here told me to forgive and forget and I`m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt as long as he`s not scrumhalf and as long as he`s substituted after his second aimless kick because lets face it Monty just doesn`t have the experience on this level and I think we`re all worried about that.

Waylon Murray has been out of sorts but for me he did enough when he partnered Brad Barrit ( oh how we miss him!!! ) to justify a position on the bench at least. Also when you go one further and compare him with Strauss who doesn`t add value at all, it makes perfect sense to select Murray.

Ryan, JP and Odwa are all current bokke. Yes Ryan wasn`t in the best of form for the end of year tour but he has something special that can turn a match for you. Who can forget his handoff on the Great Richie McCaw to score from the base of the scrum? Besides who else have you got?

Mvovo is inexperienced and Odwa means a lot to us with his ability to stand firm under the high ball and assist Stefan at the back. Sure he`s not the quickest on the park but what would you rather have? A Stephan Brink, Brent Russel who might score 2 because of their pace ( and please note it`s a helluva stretch to compare Mvovo with either one of these players, ) but then concede 3 tries cause they`re hopelessly out of position or just too small to do anything in defense or Odwa who might score only one but doesn`t let through anything?

Adi will start I think that much is safe to assume, with Swanie on his inside. Sure it`s not Tim Horan and Jason Little but that`s what we have right now.

When Muir left for WP Thompson was not as effective. Waylon looked great next to Barrit and Adi was great next to JdV. Maybe the problem isn’t Adi or Waylon but Swannie :?:

    Last Man Standing.

    http://www.justrugby.net

How to Play Just Rugby’s Last Man Standing

    1. Once you have logged in to JustRugby.net select the Last Man Standing competition from the menu.

    2. Enter your team in the competition by clicking on the Enter team button.

    3. Choose a name for your team and enter your team.

    4. Choose your winning team for this round and submit your selection. ENSURE that your selection is correct before submitting it. Once your selection is entered in the JustRugby database it cannot be changed.

    5. You may only pick each team once during the competition and when you have picked that team they will not be available for further selection.

    6. Should you forget to make your pick, a default team will be allocated to you on an alphabetical basis.

    7. Once you have made your selection for a particular round, you will be able to click on any other player’s team to reveal who they have picked for that round, provided of course that they have already made their pick.

    8. You are now done.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 24) : Agree with you on Ruan. Think he is a much better FH than most give him credit for. Just give the goal kicking to someone else. That will take that pressure off of him. Only though don’t start him this Saturday unless he is 100% over that op. For this game think Meyer should start from what I have heard about him. Have not seen him play yet.

Frans not a FH mate. Maybe he will surprise us but think his best postion is FB or inside centre. Sure would have felt a lot better with him at inside centre this week. Pity we lost him.

Anyway, the list of copy-and-paste sites is as long as your arm (and growing every day… just found a new one yesterday!)

We try to be a little more unique here at Sharksworld, but we can’t always be everywhere at all times. Rest assured that if the news matters, we’ll get it to you BEST, if not necessarily always FIRST :)

  • Guys just back to the squad quickly. Why is Rory ” set to start” all of a sudden?
Surely everyone couldn`t have forgotten his tendancy to go it alone and turn over possession? Or is just because we haven`t got another goal kicker?

I`d rather go with McLeod but would Monty be able to handle the pressure kicks?

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 174) : I think the Sharks’ will be playing Meyer at FH, probably then why they need Kockot for goal kicks, Pienaar will then probably come on to replace (hopefully) Meyer and McCleod to replace Kockot seeing as Pienaar’s goal kicking in Durban is quite solid, just elsewhere that he struggles.

  • I just had a idea while on the other thread….I think Craig Burden has all the attributes to make a fine openside flanker…he’s quick, strong and got very much the same built as Brussow. A better option than Botes or Keegan??? He could be the 3rd choice hooker and not get a lot of gametime so maybe he should have a go at 6

You think Ruan will be on the bench? Is he 100% over that op now? Knees are buggers hey!!! lol. Play him too soon and NO more Ruan for the rest of the season.

@Pokkel (Comment 178) : A good idea there with Craig Burden to play openside flanker.

  • Now due to the lack of co operation from the Sharks I`m forced to select a team on their behalf. I`ve decided to select the best possible line up. This side might differ a little from the run on team on saturday but blame Plum and Straeuli cause they have a negative attitude towards the press.
    Possible XV:
Flawless Lawless, Roger Smith, Shaun Payne, Andries Strauss, Stephan Brink, Hans Scriba, Dave von Hoeslin, Shaun Sowerby, Plumtree as player/coach and captain, Andrew Blakeway, Steve Atherton, Wahl Bartmann, Lood Muller, Fredrico Mendez, Guy Kebble for some added Bulk

If anything you should give me points for a good memory . . . :!:

That`s why I`m spending a lot of time over at WTR lately. Those guys are also optimistic, (even with Rose!!!) but I know they don`t expect to win the super 14. I`m willing to bet even though the sharks might end up higher on the log than those guys again this year, they`ll have more fun supporting their team. Difference is, when they lose it`s not unexpected at all and they`re used to the jokes, they joke amongst themselves! When the sharks lose it`s such a shock I go into a complete tailspin . . .
