Dumond starts for Sharks

The sudden (and unexplained) retirement from all rugby by Steve Meyer has opened the door for Monty Dumond to start at flyhalf for the Sharks against the Chiefs on Saturday. Willem Alberts has been named on the bench.

An announcement on the Sharks website a few minutes ago indicated that Meyer has requested a release from his contract for personal reasons and will not play any further rugby. Whatever this is about, Steve, we wish you well and really regret that we didn’t get to see more of you!

Another surprising selection sees Andries Struass preferred in the number 12 jersey, with Riaan Swanepoel out of the squad altogether. Waylon Murray is at 13, with the back three of Stefan Terblanche, JP Pietersen and Odwa Ndungane selecting itself. Rory Kockott will start in the number 9 jersey, with Ruan Pienaar and Adi Jacobs the only two backline replacements.

John Smit captains the team from tighthead prop, with Bismarck du Plessis and Beast Mtawarira completing an all-Bok front row. Steven Sykes and Johann Muller are the locks, while Keegan gets a rare start at openside flank. Jean Deysel and Ryan Kankowski complete the pack. Both Jacques Botes and Alberts have been named on a five-forward bench, along with Jannie du Plessis, Craig Burden and Gerhard Mostert.

I anticipate that Alberts will be withdrawn from the squad should the Sharks not obtain permission from the courts to play him. That hearing is set to take place tomorrow morning.

  • It’s all getting rather messy. Sudden retirements, court cases on Friday. This is not the ideal way to prepare for the season and I’m sure it’ll show…

  • @Jarson’s (X + V) (Comment 9) : we need to put this in perspective. Something very big and very sudden has obviously just happened in this young man’s life and I for one hope (and pray) that he’s ok. That’s far more important than the result on Saturday.

  • @rekinek (Comment 8) : That’s not what I’m concerned about, I’m worried about the amount of bad luck we have before the start of the S14. And this a day before the S14 kicks off.

@robdylan (Comment 10) : If he was injured I’m sure the Sharks would have said so. But the statement does say due to personal reasons. O well good luck to him and hopefully it’s not too serious what ever his reasons might be.

Im sure it was a huge decission and not taken lightly, in view of that it must be a decission that we should try and understand and support.

To Monty, here is your chance, grab it with both hands and a 50 meter penalty.

Jeepers they going to come at us with those centres we have. Was feeling good about the game for Saturday now not so sure. Is Ruan over that op 100% can he come on later or what?

  • Whatever the reason for Meyer’s decision, and I wish him all the best, if we give Monty a chance to settle at 10 we could do a helluva lot worse. Last year Monty and Charl were just starting to gel when Hernandez pitched up.

I know everyone wants Ruan to play flyhalf, but he`s done squat in that position to give me any hope of providing us with a solution.

Whoever plays, if I was a Chiefs supporter I would be worried. How often have we seen things like this happen at a union, only for the players to pull together and rise above it all?

  • Remind me never to apply for the same job as Monty Dumond! Everybody that competes with him either gets ‘injured’ or retires fro ‘personal reasons’.

Reckon I’m gonna start calling him Monty Mafia! Or Monty Don… although that rhymes with Donkey Kong… might be on the ‘injury list’ soon myself!

Dude, Monty against all odds proved everyone wrong last year when he had a decent run at 10 – a solid 12 is good enough – I fail to see game-breaking 12′s in most teams today.

You have a decent enough team to challenge for a top 4 spot, but reading some comments here it looks like the guys are not even entertaining a top 10 and that is before the comp even started…

  • I noticed that Doppies Le Grange has again been selected ahead of the promising Walter Venter.

You guys should really have tried to sign him last year after Brad left and when the rumours started about Frans leaving!!

Mate if you look deeper the only reason you are negative about your own team is because of the press surrounding your team, which to a large extent is unsubstantiated I might add.

  • Well can’t wait ’till o kick off – then this madness can stop. My nerves are freyed…
I have faith in my boytjies – they are a professional outfit and can deal with anything that comes up. Think we might have a bit of a wobble in the start….but I think we can take this.
How I do miss Fransie boy though!

  • I bloody well hope it’s really for personal reasons.

Normally when a person suddenly resign (retire) for unspecified personal reasons it is anything but personal and if it’s not, there is possibly a few rotten fish in the shark tank and you guys are in for a miserable season.

  • lauaki is not playing because his arm is infected, he got bruised in the last pre-season game the Chiefs played and now the bruise has gone septic and he is experiencing some discomfort hence Fosty decided not to field him.
