So I’ve been making a few “subtle” changes as a surprise for all of you, as I’m sure you’ve noticed!
Probably the one that’s raised the most eyebrows is the little star icons on the new comments page, so I figured an explanation was probably in order. We’ve decided to give you guys points to show how much we appreciate your contributions here at Sharksworld and the stars are an indication of how many points you have. Simple, no?
Ok, so there’s a little bit more to it. Since the points scoring system only went live a few days ago (in the background without any of you noticing) I needed to do an historical allocation. So what I did was counted the number of comments you’ve posted and multiplied that by 5 (5 points per comment). I then counted the number of articles you’ve written (if any) and multiplied that by 100 (100 points per article). Those of you who have won any of our competitions, either on JustRugby.net or any of our SuperBru pools, got an extra 1000 points as a reward.
Once the historical points were taken care of, the site will now allocate points in an ongoing fashion, in much the same way. 100 for an article, 5 for a comment and 5 points for a daily login (I couldn’t award that one retrospectively, I’m afraid). If you win a competition, you’ll get an extra 1000 as well. I’m sure we’ll think up cool new reasons to award points as we go along.
Along with the points go the ranks… depending on how many points you have, you’ll fit into a particular rank and the image below your user pic on the comments page will indicate which rank you currently hold. Have a look at the following image, which will show you what the ranks are, how many points you need for each one and what the associated image looks like:
You can check out your own progress at any stage by looking at the User Statistics page. You’ll notice that we now order the Top 20 by points total too – and we’ll be using points as a way to choose a winner for competitions, giveaways and so on. So you see, they really are quite useful!
There are a number of other icons too, which appear at the top of the user picture where appropriate. Here is what each one means:
User has won a competition. Hover over the picture to see which competition the trophy is for.
User is a Sharksworld author (anyone can become one! Just ask me)
User is a Sharksworld administrator. If they ask you to do something, please pay attention!
So there you go. Hope you like the new system and that it leads to lots of good fun and banter. If there’s anyone who’s won a SuperBru competition that I haven’t recognised, please let me know. Bear in mind though, that only winning the official Sharksworld pool counts.
So if I have a draw with anyone in any comp I win bacause of my superior points tally?

For starters, you’re not eligible for any prizes, as I’m sure you know
but using points as a way to pick a winner is not going to be uniformly used in all situations. Take LMS and FL, for instance… there, we’ll only look at points that have been scored since the beginning of the competition (we can do that, you know). The cool thing about points is that it measures ALL of your contributions to the site, commenting, writing articles and even just logging in.
When it comes to things like deciding who to give tickets to, I think it’s fair to bias the system in favour of those who’ve contributed for the longest period. Given that we eliminate previous winners before going to points anyway.
