Supporting Steve

The news of Steve Meyer’s retirement was a shock to pretty much everyone and there has been much negative press surrounding it. I don’t pretend to know what the reason for it is but I do believe the negative press has been unfair on the man.

Rugby players are human beings as well, even though us fans only see them on the rugby field. They are people with emotions, they are people with real problems. Therefore we need to respect Meyer’s decision and trust that the truth will come out when the time is right.

No matter what he has done or what has happened in his personal life, Steve Meyer does not need condemnation now. In fact, he needs our support more than ever.

Steve, on behalf of Sharksworld, best of luck for the future and we hope you and your family are well.

  • what negative press? it does bug me that he left it so late though. that was a little ugly on his part. but as you say we don’t know the circumstances, maybe it was an emergency.

  • I think we all should just move on and set out sights on the exciting game on Saturday evening. True, it hasn’t been the ideal way to start a season but out of respect for Steve Meyer’s personal reasons, lets leave it be instead of the Keo way of picking at a scab.

  • It’s puzzling as to why some people have the chiefs as clear favourites. Their record in Durban is abysmal, they’re notoriously slow starters in the Super 14, they’re missing some key personnel and have their third choice captain on standby. Not that the Sharks are even remotely better prepared for the game. In that context, you’d have to say it could go either way…

  • Well I personally think, if you’re a profesional sportsman you have to accept the publicity that goes with it and when something like this happens reasons has to be given.

If you want to enjoy the limelight when things are good, you’ll have to also face the music when you’re at a low…..it’s called a two edged sword.

  • @CapeShark (Comment 12) : I wouldn`t say the Chiefs are favourites but when you take into account the turmoil at the sharks, Andries Strauss in the starting line up and their pre season form you`ve got to admit the Chiefs are in with a shout here . . .

  • I am however mostly over the shock of his retirement, but I was very excited at the prospect of seeing Meyer play, as was many Sharks supporters which is probably why we’re upset by his decision.

I will be backing my Sharks 100% and will show faith in Dumond and Strauss who has both showed themselves to be more than adequate in their respective positions. Admittedly they have been guilty of proving the contrry, but here’s hoping our boys in black will step up to the plate.

  • Tank Lanning’s prediction for the Sharks game:

I think the Sharks are up queer street without a paddle this year, and it starts at tighthead prop, where Plumtree is falling into the same trap Peter de Villiers fell. John Smit should be playing hooker, and that is that. The perennial Adi Jacobs shoulder injury is another big issue, not to mention the sudden retirement of new signing, Steve Meyer. How bloody bizarre? Chiefs by 3

bet then again this is the same prop (and i mean that in the worst sense of the word) that called for one of the Saffa sides to throw a match so that another Saffa side could make the S14 play-offs.

  • Hi guys!!! From my point of view Steve Meyer has wasted our time, many will not agree with me but instead of those 20 minutes in the warm-up that he took, they could have given it to someone else who actually want to play. I dont give a damn what he did or didint do that’s none of my business but goodness me we dont need people wasting our time at this point on time.

    Steve Meyer thanks for nothing!!!.

What the hell, if it was personal he would’ve asked to be given leave untill his personal problems was sorted, not resigned with ‘immediate effect’. Lots of players have had problems of death or illness in the family and didn’t resign from rugby, infact he’s probably the first…

So why the big hush….He doesn’t wanna come clean, then I say there’s much more to this story.

Strange how Joost was crucified for not coming out with the truth, but Meyer is ‘only human’…double standards.

Sharks shocked as Meyer calls it quits ZoomBookmarkSharePrintListenTranslateTHE Sharks have been rocked by the shock retirement of new flyhalf recruit Steve Meyer yesterday, but coach John Plumtree says they cannot allow it to distract their focus from tomorrow night’s opening Super 14 encounter against the Chiefs at the Absa Stadium.

Just three weeks after it was confirmed that the 25-year-old had signed a two-year deal with the Sharks and would be returning to his old team after several seasons with Perpignan, Meyer dropped the bombshell that he would be retiring from rugby with immediate effect.

The former Kearsney College pupil was not only tipped to start tomorrow night after running at No 10 during both Sharks training sessions on Monday and Tuesday, but he was seen as a long-term flyhalf option for the coastal franchise after Argentinian Juan Hernandez came and went with only a brief impact.

Meyer cited personal reasons for his retirement, and CEO Brian van Zyl told the Daily News that it came as a massive surprise but that they respected his decision and agreed to release him.

“The decision from him was an absolutely huge shock to us. We got the news out of the blue that he wanted to retire.

    Pressure

“He said it was for personal reasons and whether it was because there was just too much pressure, perhaps a fear of failure, or something else, I just don’t know. Whatever the reason may be, he said he just doesn’t want to continue his rugby career anymore.”

It was confirmed the Sharks will now once again look at recruiting a potential replacement, but for now stalwart Monty Dumond has been named to start at flyhalf tomorrow night, with Ruan Pienaar providing cover from the bench.

Plumtree said they could only make the best of a difficult situation and continue to prepare as professionally as possible.

“Steve’s decision was a massive surprise, but what can you say, rugby is just full of surprises. All I can say is that he cited personal reasons.

“It’s far from ideal but there’s nothing I can do and we’ll just have to move on now. We have Monty starting at flyhalf and Ruan who can always slot in there as well. In time we’ll have to look at finding someone else.”
They will also be desperately hoping that today’s court ruling into the Lions-Sharks contractual dispute goes their way, otherwise Van Zyl confirmed that they would have to withdraw Willem Alberts from the team for tomorrow, with the No 8 named on the bench.

Sharks commercial manager Rudolf Straeuli said they expected a swift judgment today and that once the matter was settled he would then be able to fully explore the possibility of signing another flyhalf.

Besides the huge surprise of Meyer’s resignation, the Sharks team announced for tomorrow night’s encounter is as expected, with Andries Strauss and Waylon Murray indeed slotting in at centre, while John Smit will start at tighthead prop alongside fellow Springboks Bismarck du Plessis and Tendai “Beast” Mtawarira.

Time is self-admittedly running out for Smit to add a Super 14 title to his vast array of career successes, and the Sharks captain emphasised that he and the team were determined to ensure this season’s Super 14 was not another “wasted” campaign.

The last time the 31-year-old captained the coastal franchise through a campaign was during the 2007 competition, which ended in a devastating one-point defeat to the Bulls in the final.

In his recent book, Smit describes that result as something he’ll never get over, but a successful Super 14 this year would surely help him to do just that.

The esteemed front rower is just two appearances away from earning an incredible 100 Super Rugby caps and said he was fully aware of what was at stake this season.

“That clock keeps ticking. You don’t get any younger and your seasons start running out and you start regarding each one as your last. The message I have even given the youngsters is that any campaign could be your last, whether you’re 21 or 31. I think if you have the right approach every campaign is an opportunity to win, and one where you don’t is virtually a waste of six months of your life.

“So we’ve put a lot of effort into this one and there’s a lot of work to come, so hopefully we can follow through this time.”

Nevertheless, it’s certainly tough to know what to expect from the team in this opening clash, with the Sharks having had to deal with an array of off-field distractions, while also giving very little away with their rotation policy during the warm-up matches.

@sharks_lover (Comment 161) : Damn we could’ve used him, saw the Force struggling with their newbie 10 12 combo, hopefully old Monty and Strauss can keep their nerve…

Strauss tends to get nervous and then makes a hash of things.
