The Sharks XV got their 2010 season underway with an impressive 65-14 win over a KZN club team last weekend. Coach Sean Everitt used the match as an opportunity to give some much-needed gametime to a number of fringe Super 14 players, including those returning from injury.
In all, 26 players were utilised in a game that was locked at 7-all after 40 minutes. The Sharks XV ran riot in the second half, though, thanks in no small part to seasoned players like Deon Carstens, Pat Cilliers, Charl McLeod and Riaan Swanepoel. Although the side for Saturday featured a number of players that will miss the first few games of the Vodacom Cup season through being on the Sharks Super 14 tour, the Sharks XV squad that was this week named on SARugby’s web site is a strong one, boasting plenty of talent.
The bulk of the players have come up through the Sharks age group ranks and the Academy, with only three players coming in from outside of the province this year. Louis Ludik is one of them, although he will join the Super 14 squad when fit. Journeyman Lions and Bulls scrumhalf Nicholas Eyre and Maties centre Jean Stemmert are the others.
The Sharks XV squad for 2010 is as follows (players in bold have also been named in the Super 14 squad this year):
