In a case of sick irony, it was announced today that the Bulls have lost their stalwart lock Danie Rossouw through injury, just hours after they announced that they have agreed to loan one of their promising young locks, Wilhelm Steenkamp to the Sharks.
In a media release from the Bulls it seems that Rossouw picked up a blow to the neck in training and have been ruled out for this weekend’s clash with the Brumbies. The Bulls have named Flip van der Merwe as his replacement with rookie lock Fudge Mabeta coming in on the bench as cover.
Earlier today the Bulls extended a lifeline to the Sharks by agreeing to release Wilhelm Steenkamp to the Sharks for the remainder of the Super 14 with the Sharks suffering a double blow of their own in the lock department last week.
There has been no indication from the Bulls that they would pull out of their deal with the Sharks which might just put them in a difficult position considering Bakkies Botha is only expected back in rounds 4 or 5 the earliest.
The Bulls face the Brumbies and Waratahs in successive weekends before they have a bye and will hope that the injury to Danie is not too serious.

Heading should be ‘ Lock crisis at the Bulls’ like those other sites do with the Sharks
@Jarson’s (X + V) (Comment 1) : i agree we don’t need blue bulls in oue team so go and just take him back and we will use our baby sharks
@Pokkel (Comment 2) : hehehe, true
@Pokkel (Comment 2) : there’s no crisis @ the bulls, they should just stop the steenkamp deal like the sharks did the dumond deal…and let the Sharks dip into their well stocked academy.
Steenkamp must be cursing his luck. No surfing for you boy back to Snor City you go!
If the bulls run into trouble because they short locks we`ll never hear the end of it. Best not to accept Steenkamp now.
@Original Pierre (Comment 6) : Snor City….
@Original Pierre (Comment 6) :
i agree there we don’t want them spitting at us now so go back to well that a new one snor city i like that one and must remember it
They’re in a worse position with their lock than we are if I’m not mistaken. Bakkies and Danie, we only lost Mostert (I asume we got him to replace Albert) and now we’ve got that lock of theirs.
Just heard about this, had to share it. Just heard English flyhalf Andy Goode has signed to play for the Super 14 for the Sharks. He will apparently join during the tour away. Anyone have anymore info on this? What is he like as a player?
Well this might just disprove the rumoured return of Meyer?
@deanoelsch (Comment 10) : also just heard. Will dig into it when I get home
@robdylan (Comment 12) : Would love to know how good he really is? No pun intended, that would be too easy!
@deanoelsch (Comment 10) : rugby 365
this i like
@deanoelsch (Comment 13) :Goode was nominated for the Zurich Player of the Season Award in 2004/05 and also the PRA Players’ Player of the Year Award. He also ended that season as the Leicester Tigers’ Members Player of the Year and in March 2008, he became the all-time leading points-scorer in the Guinness Premiership, overtaking RWC hero Jonny Wilkinson.
Couldn’t Staeuli have orginized Butchie then?…oh no, I forgot, that would have meant Straeuli had to call on a local player….
But Goode is better than Monty…Butch would have been best though…
Steenkamp is not bad at all will be more than a very handy guy to have around.
@FireTheLooser (Comment 17) :
that is right i forgot about old butching don’t know this other dude sounds all so good with all those nomies but on the field and remember every game is a different ball game but if he can do sharks well and bring that last s 14 cup then i’m all for it
In a media release from the Bulls it seems that Rossouw picked up a blow to the neck in training
Was Queen Victoria tackling him at the time?
@KSA Shark © (Comment 18) : i surpose so but he is a bull and i’ve got this issue with bulls tell me something what is wrong with our baby sharks
@Charmaine (Comment 21) :
They are not SHARKS yet, still babies. We do NOT want to injure anyone through to early exposure to top Rugby. have a GOOD look at Robert Ebersohn and ask why he hasn’t played S14 Rugby for such a long time and why he chose to NOT play S14 but rather Sevens. becasue he belives his body was not ready for S14 and it got broken in one season spent tackling for 80 minutes a game in a Cheetahs team that spent a season defending.
It ruined him and it remains to be seen if he will recover.
We are playing a baby Shark and that is hargreaves who has grown up to almost be a big Shark. The other guys coming through are just not big and strong enough yet. simple.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 22) : good answer drill them and maybe they will be strong for s 15 they have to start some where put them in the currie cup so they can improve there game
but thanks for the info was thinking they are not good at all
On a previous thread I said that I might repeat myself. And I am going to do it now. F… Steenkamp, F… The Bulls. We have young guys at the XV in Marais and Bressler. I said that we are thin at lock with regards to experience. While the Bulls give a bloke like Mabeta crucial Super exposure, we friggin borrow someone! Hargreaves is said to suffer confidence wise. No wonder. Now I foresee that Steenkamp mite just play ahead of him! Joe Snyman, Nicolai Blignaut, Nico Breedt are the few we had and let go. Bressler and Marais to follow soon!
good for the Bulls on not reneging on the deal. Must have been tempting, though.
I don’t know what’s wrong with our guys, but I do know Steenkamp is not a bad player to have…so I won’t say no to that.
Next year Muller is gone, so we really need to think of more permanent backups. After Muller we have Sykes and I guys Mosterd if he’s not injured, but who’s on the bench if you don’t even trust these guys to play when we get injuries.
You play the guys from the academy dude. At some stage you have to give them exposure. Just like the bulls are doing to their young players
“Bulls fans and other followers will notice that the famous Bulls Babes will not perform at the first Super 14 home match of the Bulls,” the BBC said in a statement ahead of Saturday’s encounter with the Brumbies.
“The absence of the Bulls Babes is as a result of a dispute between the Blue Bulls Company [BBC] and the company that managed the Bulls Babes under contract from BBC,” the statement said.
“The dispute concerns the ownership of the trade mark BULLS BABES.
“Both parties have sought legal advice and correspondence has been exchanged between their attorneys.
“There will be no performances by the Bulls Babes until further notice from the BBC.”
