Jean playing the field

There are some interesting rumours doing the rounds regarding Jean de Villiers. Let’s just say that although Western Province may like to think that it’s a foregone conclusion the popular centre will return, that appears to be far from certain at the moment.

When a player of de Villiers’ calibre comes onto the market, there’s bound to be a fair bit of interest and the player (and his agent) are obviously going to shop around for the best deal. While WP and the Stormers have shown their hand very early here, we’re led to believe that at least two other unions are actively pursuing him. It’s all a little hush-hush right now, since nobody wants to get into a full-blown bidding war, but a certain outfit from up north are understood to be putting together a very impressive package, including a private sponsorship to top up the pay packet.

Fear not, though, Sharks fans, because if the rumours are to be believed, the story we ran with a few days ago – while speculative – may not prove to be too wide of the mark after all. You just can’t turn away from the coastal lifestyle once you’ve been bitten by it, but there’s more than one coast in South Africa, if you know what I mean!

  • What? A few unions are interested in one of the best inside centres? I’m shocked :???:

  • Ja, very few players heads inland after having played on the coast…hopefully Jean isn’t hung up on blue though…

Think old ver-Straeuli might actualy not make a mess of this one seeing as he’s so adamant to overlook the Sharks’ local tallent and has done everything in his power to ensure the Sharks keep it’s foreign look.

  • Would be very ironic if he went to the lions, cant see him playing for the bulls though. I would shave my eyebrows if he comes to the sharks!

  • Sharks must get a sponsor too. Bulls don’t need him they have WO. JD wont get enough game time there. We have a starting place with us. No problems.

Though I would rather we spent our money and buy Fransie out his contract and bring him back to the Sharks. He is YOUNG and will be around for much longer than JdV.

Now is the time to do the talking and not just the thinking. We snooze we will lose JdV and BJ. Need to be talking to them both right now.

  • Don’t think JdV will go to the Lions. Muir would want him there but really don’t think he will go there. It will be between Sharks or WP. We need to act fast and not lose our either on BJ. WP will get him if we don’t wake up fast.

  • you c i believe in my heart that jd belongs with the sharks and not with the bulls or wp unless his roots are so deep and then like you say once anybody has coast blood they return sometime or other to the coast

  • Sigh. So many news on one day that the Sharks are borrowing/buying players! Makes me angry. We can just as well close the Academy now and invest the money in a curry factory or sugarcane.
