The official Sharks website has confirmed the loan signing of England international flyhalf Andy Goode. Goode has been playing in France with CA Brive and will join the Sharks in time for the overseas tour.Goode joins Blue Bull Wilhelm Steenkamp as the two Sharks signings confirmed today. Both will join up with the squad for the upcoming tour.
Andy Goode rose to prominence with the Leicester Tigers, having made his debut for the club in 1998 he briefly joined Saracens and rejoined Leicester where he played when he won his first England cap in the 2005 Six Nations.
He signed for CA Brive in 2008 and has excelled in the French Top 14, being the highest points scorer in the 2008-09 league season.
Goode brings 17 caps for England and a wealth of experience the squad, something which may be needed on this most gruelling of tours.

I’m unsure of this signing, but if steve meyer’s reported re-signing happens, the so-called flyhalf “problem area” could almost turn into an embarassment of riches
@war1 (Comment 1) : Maybe old Straeuli wasn’t too keen to go with Meyer and his boy crush mood swings….in that case he (Straeuli) made an almost good call, though it’s not Butch yet now is it…
@FireTheLooser (Comment 2) : maybe we could get both, have you ever thought of that?
@war1 (Comment 3) : To do what with? Unless their planning on shifting Pienaar back to SH, which I would just hate.
@FireTheLooser (Comment 4) : goode is just there for the tour
@FireTheLooser (Comment 4) : And my friend Straeuli might just be that daft….btw war1, you got some more inside info you’re holding out on?
@war1 (Comment 5) : Why not get Meyer then for the tour instead of Goode, awfull load of money to spend just to bring Meyer back in when their back….but then again you might be right, their probably trying to keep the Meyer thing under the covers.
So much for the Sharks Academy being a success. So there’s not one decent up and coming youngster coming thru the ranks??
@war1 (Comment 5) : Just for the tour??? That makes no sense?
@FireTheLooser (Comment 7) : look, as far as i know, meyer is still being negotiated, its now probably up to the sharks management to decide whether they want their prodigal son back
@wpw (Comment 8) : No matter
how good an academy player is, fluhalf is
too important. That’s why Carter, Steyn, Larkham all have Super 14 titles. Remember what Brown dis for Sharks. Academy fine for most positions but not for number 10! Just ask Colin Moss!!
@deanoelsch (Comment 9) : So they say on Rugby365, but they did not however rule out the idea of him continueing with the Sharks once back on home turf.
@deanoelsch (Comment 9) : from rugby365.com “Although the loan agreement with Goode covers the Australasian tour only, the Sharks have not ruled out keeping the England flyhalf on their books for the remainder of the Super 14 season.” BTW i had no idea the goode signing was even on the cards
@FireTheLooser (Comment 12) : snap
There is a GOODE chance there are going to be some tears this weekend. 47 people have not made LMS picks yet and the probabale Default pick is playing against the Chiefs.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 15) : im watching that game from a box! yipee! also get to go home sweet home afterwards, good times
why is anyone complaining, cc is for building depth not super14, use the big guns for s14, ans settle the problems in cc, this is a great buy, we are going to do this
@war1 (Comment 14) : sort of
ok, im out. later everybody!
@war1 (Comment 16) :
I am missing the day time games tomorrow. am going to a cycle race 300kms away from home. better be back intime for the Sharks game.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 20) : im playing golf from 10, followed by a big kuier session and rugby
@KSA Shark © (Comment 20) : ill hav to check my phone for sharks game updates, 2nd week in a row no sharks game on radio and 2nd week in a row im going to the coke tin
@war1 (Comment 22) : YES, commenting using my phone work again
Goode was regularly there or there abouts with the England team.
CA Brive are currently 7th on the French Top 14 log. The step from Top 14 to S14 is pretty big IMO in regards to the quality of Rugby. In brute physicality I think they are pretty much on a par.
GOODE Andy 5/04/1980 1,80m 94 kg
Enough Saffas playing for Brive
Pat Barnard
Antonie Claasen (Port natal high school)
Ronnie Cooke
Scott Spedding
Retief Uys
Gerhard Vosloo
@wpw (Comment 8) : it looks like it we the fans can moan and moan but they still are not going to use our academy, are they getting the right teaching there is that why they won’t use them
Unfortunately the Brive site doesn’t list the positions of the players so i am not sure how many Flyhalves they have and who the others are.
(trying to gauge how much top 14 time Goode had and whether he is allowed to go becasue he is surplus to requirements)
@KSA Shark © (Comment 27) :
The Brive site and Wiki list the same squad so Wiki “should” be relaible in this instance.
There is only one other Flyhalf in the squad Italian Luciano Orquera
Hopefully they’ve cleared the move with his wife/girlfriend.
But only one of the two.
This could be a masterstroke! Goode has a clever boot and sm eye to release pace outside. Let’s hope I’m right!
Only 29?
Runs like he’s 50.
@war1 (Comment 10) : They should play Meyer in the Voda cup for a while to test his commitment.
Top 5 Guiness Premiership point scorers of all time.
1,635 Charlie Hodgson – Sale Sharks
1,489 Jonny Wilkinson – Newcastle Falcons
1,484 Andy Goode – Leicester Tigers
1,267 Barry Everitt – Northampton Saints
1,243 Tim Stimpson – Leeds Carnegie
@MysticShark (Comment 32) :
They should let him play on the highway on a busy day. (with a blindfold preferably)
BRILLIANT !!!
Now we are talking business !!!
Well done Sharks Management !!!
Goode has a very big boot and I’ve always thought he was a flyhalf that England never made the best use of ie. never fully utilized his strengths. Whenever the team struggled he seemed to be a bit of a scapegoat and never really got a settled run in the team. He did well in a strong Leicester lineup for a number of seasons.
I think this could be a very good move…albeit risky..but definitely worth the risk!
FFS, FFS, FFS.
Wow, and now we wonder why guys like Grant, Spedding, Pienaar and Steyn are either gone or not settled at 10. See Lambie and Cronje duck sumwhere else. Why oh why do the Sharks always have to have a foreigner at 10!
should we start betting what will happen to this one
retirement : ticked off, injury : ticked off, loaned to cheetah instead of monty
How the hell do Sharks management expect the supporters to stay loyal if they cant stay loyal to their own??? I hope the Sharks lose all their games.
@Jarson’s (X + V) (Comment 40) : i’m sure they know sth what I don’t . or maybe not
We need to pick Ruan at flyhalf and keep him there…no more flip-flop.
Goode last night paid credit to his employers for agreeing to terminate his contract with immediate effect. ‘I am very grateful to Brive for giving me such an experience,’ he said. ‘It was very hard for me to say goodbye to my team-mates, but I will follow their results every week.’

Umm… this sound like a temporary loan move to you? It doesn’t to me…
can someone tell me where Brive are on the Top14 log?
@robdylan (Comment 43) : That sounds very permanent.
@Megatron (Comment 44) : What does that have to do with anything? Tony Brown added some value without the Highlanders ever having been log toppers.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 25) : now would ronnie cooke not be a good signing? he`s still young, matured in france… he was a really good prospect before he left.
@rhineshark (Comment 46) : don’t worry, i got it they’re 7th….and were last in their Heineken Cup group..
@Jarson’s (X + V) (Comment 40) :
Sharks management want the Sharks to win as much as the fans do.
(even if it doesnt always seem like it to us). If the Sharks win constantly the fans will be there, management know this and they are even more aware that failure by the Sharks sees massive downturns in attendance.
@Salmonoid (Comment 49) : Very true, but their inability to plan for the future and keep investing in future talent as well as current talent is costing the franchise much more.
The problem with Straeuli is, he played for 3 different unions in his time, that’s even befor the profesional era, that’s why he’s not worried about developing local talent, he just wants to win, but without player loyalty that seems impossible.
@FireTheLooser (Comment 50) : which 3? Thought he only played for Bulls and Lions?
@FireTheLooser (Comment 50) :
I see this as planning for the short term future, ie if Ruan gets crocked in game one of the overseas tour we would be up the proverbial street without a paddle, the same place where the union would be with us, the fans.
@robdylan (Comment 51) :
Tvl, Ntvl + ?
@robdylan (Comment 51) : No, he played for the Sharks at the end of his career….you making me second guess myself, but I’m sure I’m right.
@FireTheLooser (Comment 54) : Lets see if google can help me out
@FireTheLooser (Comment 54) : I’m sure he played a couple for Natal
@FireTheLooser (Comment 54) : nah, he never played for the Sharks.
WTF is going on, I get to work feeling pretty positive about today (Cant be as bad as the cricket yesterday) only to find out we’ve signed this c***muscle, I just hope he’s the most expensive substitute orange peeler in the world.
@robdylan (Comment 57) : I’m almost 100% convinced he played for us, and if I’m not mistaken it was in ‘96…damn Google also not willing to divulge it’s burried treasure.
I dont remember Straueli ever playing for Natal or the Sharks.
