First of all I’d like to thanks Sharksworld for affording me the opportunity to express my thoughts on this site. So there i was on Saturday afternoon sick to my core, probably due to the previous evenings antics, watching the Bulls and Stormers win convincingly. As i was watching these two games it all became so clear to me, the new rules just require teams to do basics well. Thats it. The new laws allow for teams to carry the ball through a large number of phases with the new laws benefitting the ball carrier. So how is a team effective under the new laws?
The way i see it all that is required is just doing the basics right, The Bulls kept ball in hand for a number of phases which resulted in easy tries eg. Morne Steyn simply diving over the unguarded line. This didnt happen due to his incredible playmaking skills(he doesnt have that in my opinion) it came from holding onto possesion, quick ball distribution and purposeful running. I dont want to pull out my swords on The Sharks but man how sick have i become of seeing our heavies carry the ball into contact just to see it squirt out into opposition hands, how many times is Kockott taking more than a split second to long to distribute the ball, Jp Pietersen has become The Sharks number one fan out on the wing and The attack always seems to be initiated at half speed.
I know the last paragraph was harsh but I see hope in the fact that these are small things that can so easily be fixed by a tweak here and there. The difference between success and failure is so marginal, The Sharks just need to get the basics right and fight harder for every single inch on the park, they must want it! When that happens we are golden and then a semi will definitely not be out of the question. Let me step on some toes before i finish, I would put Ruan back at 9 and Goode at 10, remember who was instrumental in the 08 Currie Cup from Scrumhalf. Just a thought!

you make some good points here, Miguel… the one about the line between success and failure being a very narrow one is one we need to remember. How differently would we be seeing things now if Keith Brown HADN’T brain-farted in the final minute of the Chiefs game? Or if just one more tackle had stuck in the Cheetahs game (and Viljoen hadn’t scored that try)… or maybe if Rocket had just been that little bit more successful with his goal kicking.
The Sharks aren’t looking good at the moment because they’re not being patient and are not respecting possession. All comes down to basics.
A great first post. Well done!
In an ideal world, Ruan should play 9. But we simply don’t have the flyhalf talent necessary. I read up about Andy Goode’s exploits in Europe and I was far from impressed. If he wasn’t good enough for his club’s starting 15, why would he be any different for the Sharks?
well maybe right all teams must go back to basic that’s the way the game must be played ok with the rules etc, but i know in my heart might be over doing it a bit but sharks will get there in the top 4 and all i’m trying to say is no matter what team has the s 14 cup its a SA team and the last s 14 cup must stay in SA no matter what so all the teams must go back to basic because i think that’s the only way we are going to keep that cup just a bit of faith can bring us very far in the last s 14 comp
@CapeShark (Comment 2) : this is true Cape Shark but nothing is beyond trying! Ruan is half as good at fly half! At 9 he pushes Fourie du Prees all the way
@Charmaine (Comment 3) : Faith is key as well! without belief you might as well not even play
Maybe they should start enjoying the game again.
@Jarson’s (X + V) (Comment 6) : yeah exactly bru thats what im saying, dont over complicate the story
@Jarson’s (X + V) (Comment 6) : yeah, i hope they do soon. team spirit is key
Miguel,
Quite correct.
Simplify what you do, get the basics right and the rest will come automatically.
This is what the Bulls figured out, and to some extent the Stormers.
From your arsenal available the only real concern I have is that the Sharks lack potent strike runners specifically in the backline.
Also, the new laws requires your supporters to ball carriers playing a crucial role – the Sharks just tend to isolate themselves as ball carriers a bit too much.
Small fixes, hugely different results.
@Morné (Comment 9) : Lets just hope the hunger comes back and the belief in each other!
@Morné (Comment 9) : if we look at the way the team scored turnover tries last year, i believe we have potent strike runners, I would say that kankowski, jpp, adi, waylon fit that bill quite well, even botes and daniel can make an impact in that way.
Why didn’t you mention about the 50 points for each message?
I have submitted my message without including my username
@war1 (Comment 11) :
More referring to strike runners in from either first phase possession, or breaking down defenses and crossing the advantage line – not turn over ball.
You will find with the new law interpretation once you cross the adv line the defending team is even in more trouble.
@Morné (Comment 14) : Agree with you there. This is such a great team. It is unbelivable that we could not pull it of the firs two weeks.
@SharksRTB (Comment 12) : that was a decision made later, just send another e-mail specifying ur username
@Morné (Comment 14) : imho it is not so much that they are incapable but rather not afforded that opportunity
Thanks. Will do. How many messages have you received?
@SharksRTB (Comment 18) : all i can say is not enough. yet.
I have been thinking about this…. The bulls did it it with a scrumhalf, the stormers did it with a loose forward…. What about Rory on the wing?
Hes got the skills, hes got the motivation, hes got the aggression, he’s defense is more than okay. His goal kickng is a given.
I still think Craig Burden would be a great opensider. He’s strong and very fast.
@SharksRTB (Comment 20) : Rory doesnt have enough pace , i believe he would be rounded by the slowest wing in the super 14, kanko could be considered in my opinion
@Pokkel (Comment 21) : Craig also brings massive impact… pity he isnt a centre anymore we need a good centre
I actually forgot to mention that he is rather slow… But lets be honest, he is probably quicker than Odwa? Any way, didn’t think it will fly. What I actually would love to see is Zuks on outside centre, and Mvovo on the wing.
@Miguel (Comment 22) : Kanko at 13 I think
@Pokkel (Comment 25) : no way. Loosie or maybe wing……..
@SharksRTB (Comment 20) : i reckon Rory would make quite a fullback
@SharksRTB (Comment 26) : The reason I say that is because he’s been the only Sharks that has managed line breaks this year. Kanko makes the break and puts JPP away
@robdylan (Comment 27) :
@robdylan (Comment 27) : any news on Louis Ludik, is he touring? That guy can make an impact, he has the hunger guys
@Miguel (Comment 30) : sounds like he’ll start for sharks xv this week. Might join tour if he comes through that game?
Just read the Goode ha signed for the Worcester Warriors for next year.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/rugby_union/my_club/worcester/8530195.stm
@Tintin (Comment 32): so he’ll prob be with us for the whole Super 14.
Yes and Ruan was our scrummie in 2007, but he had Butchie at 10 and not Goode? Who might not be up to this level and then he may. Never seen Goode play.
I would keep Ruan at FH. He seems restless with all this moving about of positions. Let him stay there for a season he will get better.
@robdylan (Comment 33) : Which I dont mind, as long as Ruan stays fit and play fly half. Give him a couple more games and he’ll start firing again and then maybe we’ll start singing again.
COM’ON SHARKS!!!!
Kockett cant be slower than most our centres
hell, even Burden could play centre. I think Zuks should play outside Adi, and not on the wing. JPP should lift his game, he’s not looking for work anymore.
@Jarson’s (X + V) (Comment 36) : Kockett’s not slow, but jogs and never gets into position on time.
@war1 (Comment 16) : how are messages going on for our boys on tour have you sent them and are we going to get back feed from the cap
hop so would love to know what they think of their fans in SA
