Strong Saders team named

Richie McCaw has predictably been rushed back into action for the Crusaders, after their disastrous defeat to the Reds last weekend. The All Black skipper wins a place on the reserve bench for Friday’s encounter with the Sharks.

Another pair of All Blacks, lock Brad Thorn and prop Wyatt Crockett, find themselves in the starting lineup against a Sharks pack that has a menacing look – at least on paper. Thorn comes in for the injured Isaac Ross, while Crockett replaces one of the Franks brothers at loosehead – it’s not like anyone can really tell them apart!

Changes in the backline see Ryan Crotty start at inside centre – Tim Bateman is injured – and Sean Maitland come in on the wing. Jared Payne moves to fullback, with utility Colin Slade playing off the wood this week.

15 Jared Payne, 14 Sean Maitland, 13 Robbie Fruean, 12 Ryan Crotty, 11 Zac Guildford, 10 Dan Carter, 9 Andy Ellis, 8 Thomas Waldrom, 7 George Whitelock, 6 Kieran Read (capt), 5 Brad Thorn, 4 Sam Whitelock, 3 Ben Franks, 2 Ti’i Paulo, 1 Wyatt Crockett.
Subs: 16 Quentin MacDonald, 17 Owen Franks, 18 Joe Wheeler, 19 Richie McCaw, 20 Kahn Fotuali’i, 21 Adam Whitelock, 22 Colin Slade.

  • Don’t worry about Richie, with the new rules, he’s a walking yellow card, target Carter or nullify their forwards as The Reds did

  • robbie needs to fire this week, it’s his 3rd game, the nerves must be down plus the sharks have a [email protected] defence lately [as evidenced when riaan viljoen ghosted to the tryline without anyone touching him]…

I hope they sorted out the mountain of handling errors they racked up against the Reds!

And patience is necessary when getting to the Sharks 22, 80% of the handling errors last friday happened in the final third of the field where try scoring opportunity were begging to be exploited.

    SADERS UP!!

  • The crusers loss against the reds could be a double edged sword for us. It gives us hope against a team we always fear, but it should also motivate the Crusers to get their campaign back on track at home . . .

  • @Megatron (Comment 4) : Crusaders backs are a little obscure, it was only a couple seasons ago that 1-15 were superstars. I guess the northern hemisphere player drain has hurt their depth..

“sharks have a [email protected] defence lately”, 2 tries in 2 games, at this stage of the tourney the Sharks can be accused of many things but I dont think poor defence is one of them.

  • @CapeShark (Comment 8) : you’re quite right, a lot of saders followed the money trail to europe and some retire [leon mcdonald], last year was the beginning of the rebuilding phase & toddy did well to reach the semis with richie out for most of the season & carter totally out [sabbatical & later bruised achilles]

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 22) : yes. One in the last few minutes against the Chiefs (inside centre whose name escapes me now scored it) and then the Riaan Viljoen brainfart against the Cheetahs.

  • @robdylan (Comment 19) : Rob are you sure Bateman has an injury (what’s wrong with him). He hasn’t had his case helped playing inside instead of outside centre.

ps Force may surprise a patched up Chiefs this weekend….they didn’t look bad for 60 mins in Wellington last week !

  • @robdylan (Comment 25) : Just keeping the experts on their toes…dropped right out of the 22 as well.

the return of Crotty and Maitland give the Crusaders back a better look still no world beaters though…….however as always the pack lays it on a plate for them.

When McCaw Ross and Flynn return to the starting XV that gives them an Ab pack back up by Ab Halfs….it doesn’t matter who the rest of the backline is !

  • Very good team and they will want to bounce back after their hiding last week. With McCaw and Thorn back Saders will be a different side. Going to be tough for us but we can do it. Hoping like mad really we can pick up a win. We do that our confidence will be up, pressure will be a bit off the team.

  • I reckon the Saders are making a mistake rushing McCaw back in. Looks like a panick move. Could it be that the mighty Saders have been more than a little rattled after their trouncing by the Reds?

  • @robdylan (Comment 34) : Not only right now, though. A strong front row and a good half pairing have always been the mainstay of good rugby sides.

Unfortunately, at the moment, our team has neither a dominating front row, nor a settled and confident half pairing.

We are most likely going to have a lean year in 2010, but this could change next year if we manage our talent pool properly, because we have some very able young players in the VC squad.

And, of course, we need to pick our players in their best positions and stop panick-buying from overseas, which are stop-gap solutions that will bring us nowhere in the long term.

  • @rhineshark (Comment 32) : you need to appreciate that the saders have been in rebuilding phase from last year already, they have a lot of youngsters in the team already & leadership is very important in consolidating the gains for a team. Last week keiran read as the skipper couldn’t galvanise the side & give direction hence the need for mccaw to get back.
