Another Shark linked to Ulster

Just a few day’s after John Plumtree’s admission in the press that Rory Kockott lacks the “passing game” to seriously be considered ahead of Ruan Pienaar for the Sharks number 9 jersey, comes a rumour linking Kockott to a move to Ulster.

There is no shortage of former Sharks at Ravenhill, with BJ Botha currently there and Johann Muller on his way after the Super 14. The Irishmen are pretty desperate to sign a quality scrumhalf, having lost Isaac Boss to Leinster. They apparently spoke to Pienaar as well, but his wage demands ruled him out.

Nothing is firm at this stage, of course, as these are just rumours, but it’s really not too surprising that Rory Kockott is starting to look around a little. We’ve been lead to believe that a certain Supersport commentator, himself a former Ulster representative, may have been doing a spot of moonlighting in Durban on behalf of the Belfast team.

In other news, Crusaders forwards coach Mark Hammet is apparently now the clear favourite to succeed Colin Cooper as head coach of the Hurricanes in 2011. Despite protestations to the contrary from both Brian van Zyl and Plumtree, there’s a strong suspicion in Durban that the latter may still have his sights (and hopes) set on the Canes job. One wonders how this development will change the situation.

More on these as they develop.

  • I don’t blame Rory if the rumours are true. I must admit that I’am a little concerned about the way the union is treating it’s players. We sure have lost some great talent over the years and hope it will come to an end.

  • No surprise, you speak about your players to the press they will leave. That is not the only reason, the biggest reason is Ruan wanting to play scrummie and Ruan will no doubt get his way. Then where does that leave Rory? Rory being messed about at the Sharks so was Steyn. We mess them about they will always leave. Ruan may be next, but he seems to get his way. So maybe not.

Need to get another good kicker for the Sharks. This Goode is just there temporary.

Too many problems now creeping in. What happened to our youngster that played in the U21′s Shark side? Heard we sold him too. Now that was very daft if we done that, as thought he was actually a good player. Must keep our own talent.

  • Good luck to Rory. Two years ago I thought he was the best scrummie and never even got a look in from the Bok coach. He probably never will. So needs to move on and make the cash now. Never played for SA so he may have a chance for another country.

All the best Rory you deserve it.

  • Rory will love it up at Ravenhill…..will be joining a quality outfit as well…… big loss for the Sharks, just how big will be illustrated when Ruan and Andy combine !

  • Rob….some rumours doing the rounds on keo that either Straueli or Jake White are being lined up as Head Coach after super 14….may be worth having a look see for you up there…

This was inevitable….regretfully. I always liked Kockitt. But Ruan is the premier 9….and will hopefully get back to top form if given game time in his favored position.

    Rome is burning there.

  • You really can’t blame Rory if the rumour’s true. I would also bugger off if I was him, slated in public by his coach as he’s been.

If Rory does go we’ll lose our most consistent kicker. With our Sharkies not scoring tries we’ll have to rely on penalty kicks to try and win games. Without a good kicker that’s not going to happen.

  • @grant10 (Comment 5) : Straeuli is lined up to manage the Under 21s while the Currie Cup is on, so hoping we might dodge that bullet. Still, he always has a plan and if he manages to engineer Plum’s exit, there’s very little doubt in my mind that he’d put his name into the hat. Jake White’s name is bound to come up, but I reckon that will happen over van Zyl’s dead body. Todd Louden’s name came up as well.

  • Plums comments are not smart. He is basically saying that if the sharks get there flyhalf situation right he will sit on the bench for sure(kockett). I feel this is not a good way to go about things, competition for places should be the name of the game. Kockett has been such a good servant for The Sharks it would be a shame if he does leave. If he does my bet is on the Sharks luring in Jano Vermaak, but once again contracts will probably be an issue with the lions. I hope someone sent support message for Rory specifically, we need our players to stay in Durbs. Why go to a freezing place in Europe and never see the sun and not hit the waves? I dunno. Durbs and super rugby is the place to be.

  • Lets be realistic now.
Plumtrees interview where he chose Pienaars passing game was 2 days ago. Rory had obviously been in discussions before that and while being first choice scrummy. Think about it chronologically and maybe.
Maybe Plum is pissed of with Rory for looking around while being oin the inside lane. Just a thought.

  • Its also kind of refreshing that Plum was so honest…I mean Kockett’s option taking – or better yet seemingly only using one option and thats a tendency to always attack the blind side – was one of the primary reasons we lost against the cheetahs!

Pienaar as a scrumhalf was central to our re-emergence as an attacking side under Dick Muir, we’ll all need to remember this.

I’ve got a soft spot for Rory and would hate seeing him leave but there surely seems to be something wrong at the Sharks (on the management side). Monty wanted to go the the Freestate (on loan) and they got him to stay and where is he, at home playing for the Sharks XV, I’m sure that’s not where he wanted to be.

but what is the context? Plum goes to RP “you want to play 9?” RP “yes coach” – he would probably say yes to 15 if asked directly!
Just would like to know the in-side story. Is RP unhappy with 10? Or does he see himself edging out FdP at 9? If he has any brains he would stick to 10 for a spot in the Springbok team. This 9 BS is not what his career needs!

No context needed IMO. Plumtree revealed that Pienaar had requested to play more often at No.9 and reduce his workload at flyhalf.

    requested, not agreed.

Maybe it is as simple as a player knowing his limitations (wouldn’t that be a breath of fresh air) and realising that Steyn is the #1 Bok choice and while FdP may be the #1 at 9, RP may feel he has more to offer at 9.

There is no reason for it.

Unfortunately or Fortunately, whichever way you look at it, I am not one who believes Plaum is 100% at fault here. This is the same coach that took almsot this entire team to Champion status in the Currie Cup.

Something is up with the team but don’t give the coach all the blame. Rather look at some of the players’ mental issues, the press is picking on me, I don’t like what is being said about me, I want to play there not here, Howcome he is playing ahead of me, etc.

And the other thing which i have been quiet about Hugh Reece-Edwards. Nothing has changed in the backs since he arrived, so what did he really do? If anything.

Let’s first see how we do on tour without Reece-Edwards.
