Butch signs with Stormers – or does he?

Recent reports from the UK suggested that former Bok and World Cup winning flyhalf, Butch James has concluded a deal with the Stormers for the 2011 Super 15.

James has again suffered an injury (shoulder) shortly after he returned from a knee injury which kept him sidelined for months for his club Bath.

To add to Bath’s woes of losing the player to injury yet again they seem resigned to the fact that James will also look to return to South Africa in 2011 where he apparently struck a deal with Super 14 team the Stormers.

The Stormers currently have Willem de Waal, Lionel Cronje and Peter Grant on their books who can all fill the flyhalf role but with De Waal arguably in his last season for the Cape franchise, and questions continually asked over Grant’s ability at 10, the move might be a masterstroke from the Stormers management where experience and direction seems to be lacking in the 10/12 channel.

Update: Butch James’s agent, Craig Livingstone, has denied this rumour and points out that James has a contract with Bath valid through 2012.

  • As exciting as this is, Cronje is the future, Butch the injured past. Dunno if this is the greatest idea, he should rather go to the Sharks who DESPERATELY need him.

as a die hard sharks support 2 read this is sad. we can c how our season is goin so far wit no direction from fly half position & we dont have a recognized pivot.

butch a man that played so many years and did well at the tank should have been brought back 2 dbn by Strulli n co but they leave him and get play like NO – GOODE to play 4 da sharks ….

  • Think Butch is more injured than not these days. Really he should have thought of hanging up his boots. The body can take only so much. Crazy to still want to play on. Will probably have to have knee replacements by the time he is 40.

Also heard that Butch wanted to sign a 2 year contract with the Sharks after 2007 and was turned down. How true this is I have no idea. If it is then really not surprised to see him head off to the Cape.

    All the best Butchie.

  • Whats up what that? Why did he not offer his services to a side he really loves, The Sharks. We need him, if he stays fit. Ruan really has a problem, his lack of commitment is really worrying, especially on defence. I rate patty should be given a fair chance a fly during the currie cup, he is a team man. H emakes his tackles, kicks the penalties and passes the ball when he has to, not because you don’t know what to do with the ball, if u know what i mean.

Why sign a player if the only places we’re going to see him are sitting in the stands watching the games or on tv in some studio as a guest? That’s what he’s mostly been doing in England.

We need a young talent who can provide stability and continuity at 10 for at least the next 5 years.

Pretoria’s city centre used to be a clean, safe place with plenty of clubs, bars and shops. Now it looks like the downtown area of any city in any failed African state you care to mention. Does that stop Pretorianers supporting the Bulls?

Obviously not. Has nothing to do with it.

Like every country and especially in Africa there are part of town that you should rather avoid, but in the last two years there has been lots of construction and cleaning up and its not that dirty and gloomy as some of you are describing! I mean who still goes to Hillbrow to see the tower or goes to lunch at the Carlton centre?

  • @VanWilder (Comment 82) : Rudolf took us to a Currie Cup final in his first year, then a Super 14 final, then another Currie Cup final in his second year. In 18 months as coach, he got us to the final of every competition we played in.

Didn’t win any of them, but hey – we’re still the Sharks!

My gut feel is that Dolfie wouldn’t be the absolute worst choice as an interim coach, but I’m lead to believe that the senior players have a major problem with him. Juniors seem to e a different story.

  • @try time (Comment 69) : You’re right. Berlin as well. However, I couldn’t care less about Berlin or Paris or CT.

I’m pissed off about Durban, because it used to be a safe, clean place to spend a Saturday. You could stroll around the city bowl with your girlfriend, both in your cozzies, get something to eat, feed the pigeons in a park or look for bargains at Coventry Clothing .

You can’t do that anymore, but people just accept it. I would not advise a tourist to venture deeper than one block from the beachfront, even in bright sunshine.

And that’s a pity, because Durban has some of the best examples of Victorian architecture in the world, which could be a great way of bringing in tourists with Pounds in the pockets, but it’s being allowed to crumble for the sake of what?

And I still say Sharks Forever!

  • Rugby 365.

Speculation that Butch James has been signed by Western Province and that he would play for the Stormers in the 2011 Super 15 has no basis in fact.

There have been rumours in the UK that James, a former Springbok flyhalf with 35 Test caps, had concluded a deal to transfer to Cape Town but his agent has dismissed this as untrue.

“Butch is contracted to Bath until June 2012,” Craig Livingstone, MD of Prosport International, told rugby365.com on Monday.

Livingstone said he not even been approached by Western Province to discuss James as a potential recruit.

James, who injured his shoulder playing for Bath against Worcester Warriors a week ago last Saturday, faces at least a month on the sidelines.

The club said that James would be out of action for between four and six weeks, with the World Cup-winner targeting a return to action for Bath against Harlequins at The Rec on March 27.

The 31-year-old had returned from a serious cruciate ligament injury on February 6 to inspire Bath to their best performance of the season against Sale, only to be forced off early in the second half of their win over Worcester.

This way Stefan won`t be able to kick everything away.

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 123) : I like that loosie combo, but we might as well have anyone from the U21′s there if the guys don’t get the ball at speed and start running the gaps.

We keep on getting slow ball, then the receiver catching it standing still, then trying to break the advantage line while running into three waiting defenders, obviously getting tackled back 2 meters and starting it all again if it isn’t a turnover.

Four or five phases later we see it isn’t really working, then the ball goes to the backs, who have been retreating for the last two minutes and have retreat imprinted on their consciousness.

Having big ball carriers is only effective if they play to their strengths.
