50 up for Pietersen

JP Pietersen will earn his 50th Super Rugby cap for the Sharks against the Waratahs on Saturday. John Plumtree’s team features a number of changes to the unit that went down to the Crusaders last week.

Englishman Andy Goode gets a maiden start in the flyhalf jersey, with last week’s pivot Ruan Pienaar moving to his favoured scrumhalf position. Riaan Swanepoel will start at inside centre to complete a wholly new attacking axis, while Adi Jacobs moves one space out to replace Waylon Murray at 13.

Odwa Ndungane and Stefan Terblanche retain their places in the back three, along with the half-centurion.

In the packs, rotational changes see John Smit back at hooker – a good move against the strong-scrumming Waratahs – with Jannie du Plessis and Deon Carstens either side of him. Beat Mtawarira and Bismarck du Plessis are on the bench, along with Wilhelm Steenkamp, Jean Deysel and Jacues Botes. The latter has been rotated with Keegan Daniel, who will now start in the number 6 jersey.

Rory Kockott and Waylon Murray are the only backline replacements.

Sharks v Waratahs:

15. Stefan Terblanche
14. Odwa Ndungane
13. Adrian Jacobs
12. Riaan Swanepoel
11. JP Pietersen
10. Andrew Goode
9. Ruan Pienaar
8. Ryan Kankowski
7. Willem Alberts
6. Keegan Daniel
5. Johann Muller
4. Steven Sykes
3. Jannie du Plessis
2. John Smit (capt)
1. Deon Carstens
Replacements
16. Bismarck du Plessis
17. Tendai Mtawarira
18. Wilhelm Steenkamp
19. Jean Deysel
20. Jacques Botes
21. Rory Kockott
22. Waylon Murray

  • Have to say I’m not a fan of this selection… Exactly what kind of attacking dimension Swannepoel is going to add is anybody’s guess. But Odwa again? Surely the time has come to see what Mvovo can do?
Also against the highly combatative Waratahs, I’d want all my big loosies on. Let’s see what good Andy Foode can do…

  • what is odwa still doing there? you either have stefan or odwa, but you can’t have two geriatrics setting up attack.

  • Fear I have was that Goode was not rated much in his French club – if he bombs the Sharks are going to be in serious shit.

Now let’s see what Ruan does in his ‘preferred’ position…

  • @Morné (Comment 4) : 3rd choice french club flyhalf? Check. Wrong side of 30. Check. Very obviously unconditioned. Check. I doubt he’ll set the Super 14 alive…

  • well it is a wait and see. stefan, odwa, jp, ruan should see this as a last chance. ruan needs to prove he deserves 9, stefan needs to prove he can do more than just kick. odwa needs to prove he is a wing. and jp needs to prove he can run.

  • Just hope this Goode can play some rugby this week and not go off with a yellow. Now who takes the kicks? How well can Goode kick at goal? Have never seen this Goode oke play except for about 8 min last week. Why have we got Lambie on tour and not using him? Sharks will never ever know what they have in these youngsters until we give them a game. Or even coming from the bench.

Why ODWA again? Why not take a chance with Mvovo?????? Why have these youngsters there and NOT use them?

Halangahu should have a lekke jol if the play him @ pivot, otherwise berrick barnes is going to love schooling “broadband” goode.

No more excuses…smit must bring the legendary leadership to the table….and ruan needs to perform now that he has sulked his way back to 9…..

just hope sharks done lose bissy and kockitt….it will be a mistake.

He went to P Boys High, then straight to Sharks. Always been surrounded by the finest coaches. Beast comes here from Bulofarkingwayo, changes from FLANK!! and excells. The Sharks are not the Bokke[to state the obvious] Smit’s fabled leadership will not magically win this crap team games! dropping Bismarck to accommodate Smit is a cancer!

But there are some guys that fit in a team environment and there are those that don’t. Steyn and the DuP’s both fall into the latter category. And that has NOTHING to do with John Smit.

  • I hate to say I told you so, but it seems the STORY from the reliable SOURCE that it was six changes of which one was positional was actually JUST a story form a curdled sauce. :(

A LOT more than 6 changes inclusive of 1 positional change in there with a total of EIGHT jerseys (Jersey numbers 13, 12, 10, 9, 6, 3, 2, 1.) having different players starting in them this week with FIVE of those players not having started last week.

Nothing personal guys but I have learnt a LOOOOOOOOOOONG time ago that these “reliable sources” are invariably “well diluted watery sauces” that have either been treated like mushrooms or sucked crap out of their thumbs.
