Hargs gets the call

Alistair Hargreaves left Durban en route to Australia yesterday, to join the Sharks for the remainder of their Super 14 tour.

Hargreaves was a controversial omission from the tour squad in the first place, having started for the Sharks against the Cheetahs in Round 2. He was summarily dumped from the party on the eve of their departure in favour of on-loan Bulls player Wilhelm Steenkamp. After 2 solid performances for the Sharks XV, Hargreaves has been called up to join the tour party as a replacement for Steenkamp.

This move adds credence to the story that Hargreave was left at home to work on his conditioning. That, at least, is what the media were led to believe. Whatever the reason for the switch, to me the most important thing is that one of our most promising young players will be back where he belongs – with the Super 14 squad.

Good travels and good luck, Alistair!

  • and louis ludick?? saw him in the VC game against the WP. he looked scared to go full tilt on attack with his knee problem. he was alos subbed quite early on. he injured again? or just to give him gametime gradually?

  • @VanWilder (Comment 3) : I think they’re just managing him conservatively.

  • Pleased to see Hargreaves on tour. What is happening to Steenkamp then? Somehow don’t seen him coming back until after the tour. Not too sure but is Muller’s shoulder 100% now?

  • Glad for Hargreaves although he had a horrid game against the Cheetah’s where he missed that tackle on Riaan Viljoen.

  • @robdylan (Comment 9) : yes mullers shoulder didn’t look good on saturday. and if i recall it is the same shoulder he injured against the chiefs. so maybe it is muller. anyway, with hargreaves there it is even more important that we have a bigger eigthman in the team.

  • with hargreaves with the team, it is a good time to build him up. muller is out at the end of the tournament, so we need our backup ready to be the starter. no point giving wilhelm game time for the bulls, when we need a lock ready.

  • @try time (Comment 10) : I think Kanko is the form 8th man in SA at the moment and 365.com seem to agree Yes Alberts and deysel would be fantastic together as 7 & 8 but not as 6 & 7 however with Kanko in this form its gonna be difficult for Plum to change the side
@robdylan (Comment 9) : Heard that Keegan has concussion and could well be on his way home

  • @try time (Comment 11) : don’t jump to conclusions. Plumtree has said nothing at all about Muller being injured. I have asked for confirmation about who Hargreaves is replacing.

  • @Fattmann (Comment 12) : yes – dropping Kanko now would be about the biggest brainfart in Sharks history… well, since the decision to drop Barritt and Venter for the 08 Semi.

  • @Fattmann (Comment 12) : see the latest article. Haven’t heard that Keegs is coming home, but he is definitely suspected of concussion

  • @robdylan (Comment 13) : well whether or not it is muller, it is still pointless giving wilhelm game time, when we could be developing our future starting lock. muller is going overseas, wilhelm is back to the bulls. the sharks have little chance of making the playoffs, give hargs the experience he needs.

  • @try time (Comment 17) : Same could be asked about Doctor Doolittle. You have to wonder about some people’s access to S1 medication and said medication’s contra-indications, ie. (in)voluntary leg extensions.
