The Sharks side shows a few changes to last weeks side, but does not weaken the side at all with the great depth in the squad. Patrick will make his Debut at Fullback which is great to see.

Odwa is out injured and Stef moves to wing. Deysel and Alberts rotate and so do Botes and Keegan. John moves to bench to cover tighthead and loosehead. Johan Muller will Captain the Side.

Sharks Side to take on The Highlanders:

  1. Beast Mtwarira
  2. Bismark du Plessis
  3. Jannie du Plessis
  4. Steven Sykes
  5. Johan Muller (C)
  6. Keegan Daniel
  7. Jean Deysel
  8. Ryan Kankowski
  9. Ruan Pienaar
  10. Andy Goode
  11. Jp Pieterson
  12. Riaan Swanepoel
  13. Adi Jacobs
  14. Stef Terblanche
  15. Patrick Lambie.
  16. Craig Burden
  17. John Smit
  18. Alaister Hargreaves
  19. Willem Alberts
  20. Jacques Botes
  21. Rory Kockett
  22. Waylon Murray

Kickoff is at 8:35 SA time on Saturaday. Match officials-Jonathan White, AR’s- Matthew Stanish, James Mcphail. Tmo- Glenn Newman. All From New Zealand. Have not really heard of any of these Oakes. Even Steve Walsh would have made me happy.

Weather Update- Chance of showers between 1-2 mm. Could change, but if it does rain it should be very little.

I can’t see us losing this one; Sharks forever!

  • At last Lambie to start.

Not sure why we opt for 2 hookers on the bench!! (Yes, I know JS can cover but would rather see Herbst out there if its at 3.)

But the team is starting to take shape.

  • @Hertford Highlander (Comment 12) : That could be true for sure. But like i said they will have a good scrum and thats about it. ;-) They should be good at ball retention too, and be able to run well in broken play and from turnover ball.

  • @Oubaas2009 (Comment 17) : Hope Lambie plays to his potential, if so we can see him there alot more during this tournament. Also expect stef to stay on wing in Place of Odwa. We will see what happens, but bladdy hell we have depth. WE have forgotten about Ludik too.

  • We have around 15 internationals in this side and the others have played either junior level or are just unlucky they play in a country with so many good loose forwards. Not unlucky for The Sharks though.

Mvovo very unlucky not to have been given a run at 14.

    At least Deysel is starting….

Not feeling hopeful now…we need a cool head leading on Saturday, Johan is not that under pressure, and he is gonna have to deal with the DUP brothers…..

  • I like the look of this team, I like that some of the changes Plumtree has made shows some guts.

No one would have guessed he would bench Smith, that’s a big call to make.

And I thought for sure if one of our wings got injured that he would put Waylon in the starting team and one of Mvovo or Lambie on the bench.

It’s not that I don’t like Keegan and Jacques, but the new application of the law created a major shift in the rucks that require the bigger guys rather than the quick guys.

  • @Letgo (Comment 82) :ja that’s exactly why I like the 3 of them together, its better to have big ball carriers who are not so easy to isolate with the new tackle laws and who can work as a unit at ruck time to protect the laws and counter ruck if necessary(the major way to turnover ball so far in the tournament)

i dont think jannie will be dropped is another reason

as for smitty i think besides rotation that plum wants to finsih the game with smitty on the field

of late we have lost the very close games , and smitted at been subbed in all those games

Jannie sux, the best option would have been Herbst, but it would be suicide to play him this soon at S14 level. Until Herbst has gone through the right channels we’ll be stuck with a useless TH (and all round rugby player) in Jannie.

I agree that Smit is probably not the best tight head at the Sharks but he is much better than Jannie imo.

He is not playing well at the moment but he starred for the Boks while at 3 last year and had a good year.

He led the Boks and Sharks with distinction in the past and is a must in the side!!

The notion that he is at fault for the Sharks’ dismal performances is what I dont agree with and this term ‘turbo reverse’

Dude, I support the Stormers but I will admit their scrum is not that great either… But according to Grant10, the Stormers didn’t struggle in ANY of their scrums last week (which is a lie cos I saw them get shoved back with my own eyes)

  • what some people fail to see is that a front row is a combination,
when bj and smitty combine they stand back for noone

its a combo, yes bissy is prolly more capable in the loose then smit , but when your scrum is under huge pressure playing loose fails to be an option

win the scvrums first and then think of the loose play

to me a front row with the players there should be smitty at 2 , that being the strongest scrumming option we have

of course had BJ been there we could have rotated without to much problems,

  • @wpw (Comment 134) : Look I’m a big Smitty fan and he has been fantastic to SA but in my opinion the worst thing a good sportsman can do is to hang around to long and I fear this is what Smit is doing. He should not have gotten into the situation where he had to make way for another player. I just don’t want to see Smit making an ass of himself. Look at the EOYT in 2009. He didn’t handle tighthead at all. It was a differance of day and night when BJ came into the team. Then he should play hooker and Bismarck should go elsewhere where he is appreciated for the player that he is. I feel for Smit because the Sharks Bok scrum is being targeted by provinsial teams and the international teams are licking their lips when they think of the Bok front row. The rest of the Bok team of 2009 was good enough to ‘carry’ the bad scrum but this will not always be the case

In 2008, the Boks suffered and had an average year and this coincided with Smit not being available (I also believe the ELV’s played a role)

In 2006 we were terrible (John Smit was injured)

When John is out injured, we struggle!!

I do however agree that he is not the best option at 3 but if BJ is not available then we should go with Smit.

We have never really been destroyed at scrumtime in quite a while and I doubt it really has a bearing on our performances (my opinion of course)

As for the EOYT, none of our players did well bro.

Not even Morne Steyn!! You wanna know why?? We played too much rugby in 2009 and it was the start of the NH season which means our opponents would always be fresher!!

    2009 – S14 (13 games + knockout), B & I Lions (3 tests), Tri Nations (6 tests), Currie Cup (a handful of games)

and then the EOYT… too much rugby imo

  • @Pokkel (Comment 147) : Pokkel, The only reason our scrum was good against Italy was not that BJ was back, but back scrumming with John at hooker. With John back at hooker and BJ at TH with Beast at Loosehead we would out scrum any team. Now if Bissie was at Hooker for the Italy game even if BJ was back at TH our scrum would never have been as strong. Simple as that buddy. John is still the best scrummaging hooker in world rugby. He has been messed about for sure. It was PdV that wanted John to play TH. Then the pressure was on Plum to play John there.

I would always start with John at Hooker and Bissie coming off the bench.

Now this week we face one of the best scrums and who do we have? For goodness sake we have Jannie you cant catch or scrum and a penalty just waiting to happen at TH. Sharky told me that Herbst only arrived yesterday otherwise I would have had him at TH if he never arrived so late.

This may have been one week not to have left John on the bench.

as for the sharks they can have him
they just need to take out the check book , BJ has always said his first choice when comming baCK IS THE SHARKS

  • @wpw (Comment 153) : I suppose this all takes us back to the argument. Do you choose your best players and then the captain or do you chose your captain and then the team around him?

All I’m saying is that if your captain is THAT important then choose him in his preferred position and don’t let him do a job that he is not really capable of.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 156) : Agree and I would always choose my captain first. Then the team. Just like Kitch did just like Jake did.

John must play hooker as simple as that.

Now we have Muller as captain this week. Who I just have never ever rated being captain.

Wasted not trying out the youngsters really. We have to think about next year. Nothing to lose now with the Sharks. Our S14 is a goner. If we come 13th or 2nd means nothing. Only winning matters and that is gone. So try out the youngster now.

Play Smit at hooker all the time too. ;-)

  • gents….i see some see a conspiracy behind my smit crusade. Sorry to dissapoint you all…there is none. But, as Puma will tell you, from the outset on keo i have been saying that it is insulting to ask a great legend to move position, and no matter how wpw slices and dices it, Smit is a damn poor 3….not his fault….he shouldnt be there!…What has happened, imo, is that he is now in a twilight zone….not a 3 or 2 ….as he has been badly mismanaged. Can he come back at 2 on merit? Maybe….will be tough….but he is a damn good scrummaging 2 …and i believe a bok team that scrums well will be nigh unstoppable come WC 2011.

Yes….i hated the ‘luke is a cancer ‘ quote. I always rated Luke as a captain and a rugby player, and felt it was unneccessary for smit to talk about another Bok like that.

Do i hate Smit? No…i have never met him!…And if i did i would tell him to never go near a 3 jersey again. He is being targeted by all and sundry……and he wont survive till 2011 at this rate….

I agree with the gent who said he must do a Ruan….and tell plum and pdv to buggeroff with the 3 story….i would!

Hope a sponsor comes up with the extra cash to buy him out. Now that would be awesome to have him back home in SA. Especially for the WC next year. Still think Frans Steyn is our best bet at FB. Only had a few games there with the Boks if he had this season and next before the world cup think he would have been really awesome there. Will always remember those 3 long range kicks he got against NZ last year. That alone won us that game.

Now really out of here. Cheers all.

It seems the main reason he went there was a financial reason. The amount of money Racing were throwing at him made it a pretty easy decision. There is no ways that any team in South Africa could afford those wages or afford to buy him out of the contract.
