The Sharks have, predictably, talked up a big game before this Saturday’s game against the Highlanders. They have even denied there is a rift in the team for a record 323000 times this week. But all of this will count for nothing if they do not front up with a performance against the Highlanders.
While I am pleased that the team and management are trying to ease our fears, I do believe they have gone a bit over the top with their PR campaign because I believe the first win of the season would go a long way to dispelling those rumours.
The team has shown some encouraging signs in their recent tour games against the Waratahs and Brumbies. John Smit made a good point that a team with really bad morale does not lose by less than five points all the while fighting until the end, they are more likely to lose by fifty points or more. The critics seem to be in agreement that the Highlanders are there for the taking especially with them having flown half way across the world and having to deal with the accompanying jetlag. I would agree that they are, but the improvement in performance needs to continue, or maybe more to the point, the Sharks need to walk the talk. I believe a win would do wonders for the morale and confidence of the team and may stand them in good stead for a climb up the log if they build on that.
If the Super 14 games were won in the media and fighting talk from the coach, the Sharks would probably topping the log right now, the Sharks NEED to back their words up with a performance. We do believe in you guys and I personally will be drinking my coffee on Saturday morning cheering my team onto what will I believe will be a good win.Tweet
