Talk is cheap

The Sharks have, predictably, talked up a big game before this Saturday’s game against the Highlanders. They have even denied there is a rift in the team for a record 323000 times this week. But all of this will count for nothing if they do not front up with a performance against the Highlanders.

While I am pleased that the team and management are trying to ease our fears, I do believe they have gone a bit over the top with their PR campaign because I believe the first win of the season would go a long way to dispelling those rumours.

The team has shown some encouraging signs in their recent tour games against the Waratahs and Brumbies. John Smit made a good point that a team with really bad morale does not lose by less than five points all the while fighting until the end, they are more likely to lose by fifty points or more. The critics seem to be in agreement that the Highlanders are there for the taking especially with them having flown half way across the world and having to deal with the accompanying jetlag. I would agree that they are, but the improvement in performance needs to continue, or maybe more to the point, the Sharks need to walk the talk. I believe a win would do wonders for the morale and confidence of the team and may stand them in good stead for a climb up the log if they build on that.

If the Super 14 games were won in the media and fighting talk from the coach, the Sharks would probably topping the log right now, the Sharks NEED to back their words up with a performance. We do believe in you guys and I personally will be drinking my coffee on Saturday morning cheering my team onto what will I believe will be a good win.

  • Basically, for the Sharks to get Butch back, SARU must just stick with their story to not contract foreign based players for 2011 wc….Bath said they won’t stand in Butch’s way regarding his international aspirations.

  • And on a side note, also in the Mercury….

Melbourne rebels has coach has met with the Duppies (joined by the hip it seems) during the Sharks tour down-under regarding a move to the rebels.

Not to worry yet, both are contracted with the Sharks untill the end of 2011….(but the Rebels are welcome to have Jannie on loan for the whole of 2011  )

Now that we may get Butchie back. They should go and buy Frans Steyn out of his contract too. Bring back BJ as well.

Heard the Oz commentators last week saying that the Dup brothers will probably be playing for the Rebels next year. So the sooner we get BJ back the better. Move John back to hooker. Butch back and if we get Fransie back too we going to look the business again ;-)

Else we’ll probably be stuck with dik bek Ruan at FH (fail), even though I always believed he’d be great, he obviously doesn’t want to play there, thus he’s been having a miserable time there.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 26) : I know. Approach a big company to buy him out of that contract. Would also have to get who ever does that to sponsor him with extra cash. Otherwise don’t see him coming home. This is all dreams though. Read he is really enjoy it over there. I somehow feel he is going to feel really left out by not being back next year to play the WC.

I know there is a sponsor that pays Matfield a bit extra too. Sharks should really look into that to get Fransie back. Then does he really want to come back to the Sharks? Everytime I went to a game the ones sitting in the East Stand seemed always to boo him when he tried his drops and missed. Maybe he has had enough of the supporters at the Tank. I hope not though but I know if it was me trying hard out there and getting booed all the time I would never be back.

Unless the money was just too good of course

  • Well Straeuli got us into this hole (so nice to once again have an opportunity to blame him  ) so he needs to dig us out, I think Butch is his first move in the right direction.

Don’t worry about his knees, if they were still buggered, he would have injured them by now, he has recovered from his shoulder injury.

Keep the faith boys, we need him to be the answer.
