Sharks injury toll mounts

The bad news is that Johann Muller’s broken finger will definitely rule him out of this weekend’s game against the Hurricanes. The worse news is that no fewer than 9 other squad members were forced to sit out training on Monday owing to a variety of bumps and bruises.Coach John Plumtree has intimated that Alistair Hargreaves will come into the starting lineup for Muller, but there are further injury concerns in the pack as well. Jannie du Plessis is nursing a tender hamstring, while the “twins”, Keegan Daniel and Jean Deysel are also both in doubt, the former’s shoulder injury likely to keep him out of action this weekend, while the latter’s leg injury is expected to clear up in time.

Andy Goode is the worst of the backs – he also has a hamstring strain – but the Sharks medics will have a lot of work to do between now and Saturday to ensure that something resembling a fit 22 is able to face the Hurricanes.

One player who is sure to be included is Beast Mtawarira, who is now over the flu that caused him to miss out against the Highlanders. John Smit’s superb showing in the unfamiliar number 1 jersey will give the coaching staff some interesting food for thought, though, when deciding whether the affable Zimbabwean should come straight back into the starting lineup.

Possible Sharks lineup:

15 Lambie, 14 Terblanche, 13 Jacobs, 12 Swanepoel, 11 Pietersen, 10 Pienaar, 9 Kockott, 8 Kankowski, 7 Alberts, 6 Botes, 5 Hargreaves, 4 Sykes, 3 J du Plessis, 2 B du Plessis, 1 Smit (capt)

16 Burden, 17 Mtawarira, 18 Steenkamp, 19 Deysel, 20 Goode, 21 Murray, 22 Mvovo

  • What happens if Goode doesn;t recover from injury??

Who will take his place on the bench???

No flyhalf or scrumhalf cover on the bench??

  • Lambie and I guess Adi can cover 10 if needed…not of the bench but still. And Ruan covers 9, if Ruan and Rory gets injured, then we’re in trouble. It would be interesting to see who plays 9, if neither of those guys are there. Lambie? Botes? Kanko?…That would be quite a predicament. Not that I want this scenario to play itself out on Saturday.

  • @wpw (Comment 1) : Do the maths, Pienaar can cover 9, Goode slots in, if Goode not ready they will have to opt for a bench of 5-2 spilt (forwards-backs) Adi can move to 10, Murray to 13, so was it that difficuilt, can even move Lambie to 10, Stefan to 15, Mvovo to 14…

  • At least our next game is a home game, there’s a bunch of players here that could get a chance if we have a couple of injuries. It seems that’s the only way Plum will make the big changes.

Let’s not hope for injuries, but when the team’s back, a couple of niggles in a few positions, might not be the worst thing.

It would seem to be that every SA team is suffering injuries across the board , this is where the Sharks are lucky they certainly have depth in most positions.

The Lions’s defense was poor overall and I don’t think Rose is the only one to blame. This has been a problem for him and the Lions for a long time now and no one seems to be able to fix it.

  • When I read injury my head just drops. Not just for the Sharks but Stormers, Cheetahs now also the Bulls. Injury is creeping in. We at the Sharks can never afford to have injuries we hardly winning with the team fully fit let alone injured

Just as well we have cover with Alberts this year for Deysel. Also Botes for Keegan.

We have Beast coming back this week. So probably will see John go back to TH. Would liked to have seen the same front row from last week start again this week.

Okay back later. Just a quick post.

  • @Stef (Comment 69) : Actually your timing for your holiday is not as bad as it could be. It would have been much worse trying to watch the Sharks on their tour while in the US. Games have been starting at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 a.m. while on tour. Games in South Africa are at 9, 11 and 1 p.m. Much better timing to watch. Don’t count on mediazone, their service has been crap this year. livetv4ever.com is the place to go to get the matches live.

    Cheers,

An SA Expat Living in the USA.

  • @Letgo (Comment 45) :

Im sorry i don’t buy that He has been coached by some of the best coaches in SA including a few stints with the Boks..he is a proffesional player and surely realizes his short comings ..which HE alone is responsible for and should address.
I don’t argue that he does or rather did have the x-factor but in order to progress one should have the basics waxed ..Tackling for a start.

  • I will be watching the game here. http://www.theofficebkk.com/index.htm

Not sure if it will be worth it if we field a “B” side.
