Looking at our Depth

The Sharks have without a doubt have some of the best players to choose from. The last 3 years we have had an average of at least 12-14 internationals in our squad. Maintaining the squad will be key if we seek success in Super rugby for years to come.

Our Pack is really good at the moment we have just had some bad luck concerning Mostert, Luckily hargreaves has shown he has the ability to cover at this level.

Loosehead- Beast, Deon, Nhlapo and Chadwick. Two world class players and two developing, but have the ability to grow into the first side a few years from now.

Hooker- Bizzie, Burden and Cooper. Biz is a top class hooker, whereas burden still needs more game time to establish himself, we know his potential. Cooper has the size, work rate and agression to fill Bizzie’s boots in a year or so; if required.

Tighthead- Jannie, Herbst, Redlinghuys. Jannie(when on form) and Herbst are both top class tightheads. Redlinghuys still needs time to gain a few more kg’s, but he has the potential to be great.

John Smit- Covers the whole front row, best at loosehead at the moment. Won’t be with us longer than another year or two tops. Always a great player and leader, and as he has shown still has so much to offer in terms of the actual playing part.

Locks- Muller(leaving end s14), Mostert, Sykes, Hargreaves, Bresler and Marais. First three to do the job going forward next year. Youngsters Bresler and Marais will push for spots when they get time at currie cup level.

6- Botes, Keegan- There are other guys that some might add that are in our greater squad, but i don’t feel they have what it takes to play Sharks first team in Super Rugby. Heinrich Brussouw should be targeted in the future as our starting 6. Botes has been great recently, keegan is more of an impact player. Also we can’t deny the extra fire power Brussouw can give our already impressive pack.

7- Alberts, Deysel, Groenewald, Rhodes. First two are brilliant. Crash very well, big and strong and make the hits. Deysel also does some real good work come ruck time. Groenewald needs to get some time CC. He has the strength and even the size at his age to play at a top level, he has great leg drive and runs full out. Rhodes is still a mix of 7 and lock. Thus, i see him as being a backup player in the future.

8- Alberts, Kanko- The only two players in the squad that can do the job Sharks fans want to see from 8. Both different, but both are world class.

9- Ruan, Kockett- Ruan if settled here should be there for years to come. Kockett will always be a great goal Kicker and a scrummie that can run around the fringes very well. If Kockett improves his passing game and his ability to get good ball out faster, he can again become our first choice.

10- Nobody really. The Sharks 15 guys are not bad, but not great either. Pretorius probably has some potential to be a really good 10, just needs the game time. For the long run probably better for him to settle and become a 10. Sharks need to go and buy at least another flyhalf to replace Goode. We do not have enough quality flyhalves to be honest. Lambie could be a possibility, but either needs to focus on 10 or 15. Fullback is probably the best place for him for now.

11- Jp, Mvovo- Both fast and solidly built. They should be with us for years to come.

12- Riaan, Andries, Pretorius- Not great to be honest. Frans steyn was really great at 12 and none of these guys have the potential to fill those huge boots. Not saying they are bad players; just that steyn would be the perfect choice. Sharks might want to look for a big inside that has pace and an eye for the gap to back it up. I would invest in Ruan Combrink; Youngster from Wp, who played with Patrick Lambie at high school, i have also seen first hand what he is capable of. He has a good boot, runs at space and weighs at least 90-95 Kgs. He loves Western province, but a good contract can bring him to the sharks.

13- Adi, waylon, Stemmet- stemmet is a real guy for the future, just needs maybe 4 kilos. Waylon and Adi…we know what they are capable of on form.

14- Odwa, Ludik, Stef- all classy players that contrast from 11 in that they have qualities of wings and fullbacks. Might want to have a llok at some wings we might want to bring to the union, just for some depth. I would gun for Wandile Mjekevu and put 5 Kilos on Him. He has great potential which we can see even at his young age.

15- Stef, Patrick, Ludik- Stef won’t be around too long is my guess dispite his great fitness levels, he will probably call it a day in about a year or so tops. Ludik and Patrick are very capable of taking us forward, both are very solid fullbacks.

Lets hope The Sharks keep the vibe in durbs and keep the great squad we have. Still believe we have ability to sneak semi this year…our side is really too good not to get close. Sharks forever!!!! Enjoy your bye!!!!

  • So, in a sense, we’re sorted for 1 – 9; maybe a lock to replace Muller and BJ Botha if he wants to come home.

We desperately need a 10 and a 12 (ideally who can cover 10). I’d add Zuks Vulindlu to that list of Wings too. We certainly don’t need to add anyone to the Back 3. I’ve said it before, and it’s a pipe dream I realise, but I’d like to bring our home grown guys back.

    10.Peter Grant – Maritzburg College
    12.Brad Barritt – Kearsney College
13.Waylon Murray – Westville Boys’ High
    15.Pat Lambie – Michaelhouse

    How cool would that be?

I sometimes get the idea that he is not always a team player. Maybe making money is more important to him at the moment.

But hey… please don’t see this as me slaging him off. I still believe he is a great player who will become even better as he get’s older (Mature/Experience) and would rather have him in my team then in the other guys team.

I am actually not against the rule as it forces the coach to look locally and there is a lot of talent in SA. I feel perhaps people are bit impatient and looking for easy solutions by bringing an experienced guy from north. This is not always best.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 19) : agreed. the old ones can go  not that we are age discriminative.

i do not think that we should be too worried about players leaving. In most cases (like Percy, Stef, Johann or even Jean De Villiers) these are the guys who’s already stamped their mark on SA rugby and just making place for new generation.

There are also those who just did not make a cut (whether rightly or not) and here Barrit is one of these unfortunate examples. But overall I do not think we should lament loosing these players.

I do believe that northern hemisphere countries have bigger problem because having all these foreigners may seriously affect youth development. Similarly like some of us are not happy with having import flyhalf.

Our problem starts and inside centre and maybe we need to look at buying one of the outstanding Province 12s De Jong seems to be provence favorite so look at whitehead or Bosch or Morgan Newman who might be the answer for us
Since dicks days we have always worked with bash up 12s and not creative ones-dick excluded and in order for our line to spark we need that kind of centre quick hands and eye for the gap as well as the ability to take it up if necessary
OUr F/H position could be covered by Rory/Cronje and maybe even the guy with girlfrend problems-who i hear is re-considering his postion-

His brother is unlucky… since Ru is back at 9, he’s fourth in a very talented pecking order. He’ll work his way up, though.

I just think that we have to look very carefully at players looking to leave our shores and make sure that we are not shooting our selves in the foot by not trying to find a way to keep them in SA. Maybe a panel needs to be appointed to look at these youngsters and identify future stars. But that is easier said then done.

But on your second point. It might be intresting to compare the local guys with those playing abroad and determine bok material available vs that abroad.

  • we’ve got a bit of a problem, cos there was a whole crop of 10s that all left, pretty much as a direct consequence of the Butch era, as well as the succession of imports. Guys like Steve Meyer, Scott Spedding, Wessel Booysen, Ignus Prinsloo and countless others all left, leaving a massive gap in the “talent pool”. It’s hard to get out of the buying habit because of the hole that we’ve dug. We need to either back one of the real youngsters now, or bring in yet another import to tide us over.
