Realistically Speaking or Fanatically Wishing?!?

Okay, so this might be a little interesting and of some importance to any Sharks supporter who is fanatical enough to believe that the Sharks has made such a turnaround that they will not only win all the rest of their games, but get at least 3 winning bonus points from those games.

Not that it is particularly fanatical to believe that the Sharks will do that in the last weeks of the super 14, they are actually being tipped to win by more and more people, but because I know that if you’re reading this article on this site, you are definitely fanatical enough to still believe that our Sharkies will make it to the Semi’s and then the Final and then take the trophy, win the lottery, find a cure for cancer, feed all the hungry and thus create world peace.  It’s not that farfetched when you are a fanatical Sharks supporter, because in our eyes they are just that good.

The thing is I’m also fanatical enough, that when I have two days extra in a weekend I use those two days to prove that there is some substance behind my believe in the Sharks.  I didn’t have enough time to get to world peace and that stuff, but as far as reaching the semi’s, I found prove that it is in fact plausible.  As I said before, and as most of you would have noticed, there is 10 teams in this competition that is good enough to beat any of the other teams and 4 that is erratic enough to beat any of those 10 teams on any given day.  Usually, as it has been pointed out by Rob, a team needs to get at least 40 points to reach the play-offs. This year though, because there are so many teams gunning for those four spots, I’d bet 37 will be the magic number, I wouldn’t be surprised if more than one team makes it into the semi’s with less than 40.

One more thing that I noticed, a very good thing, is that all of the top 5 teams still have to play 3 or more games away from home. If they lose three and we lose none, that’s a turnover worth 12 points and enough to actually give us top spot. This comment does not indicate that I am stupid enough to believe that when the Crusaders plays the W.Force away that they will definitely loose, but it doesn’t hurt the chances now does it.

So I set up this Microsoft Excel document with my prediction of wins and losses and the log for each week. If I can get it up onto the site it will support my belief in the Sharks even further. It’s kind of fun to have it on excel to, because every time a game doesn’t work out the way I predicted it I adjust it on all of my logs week by week and see how it will end up effecting the Sharks. It keeps my interest in this year’s Super 14 high, since now, every game is important for me and the Sharks.

I wish I could have added the pictures to the end of my article, but it seems that I am just not skilled enough. So for, total enjoyment please open the pictures at the end of the article now and then read the three last paragraphs as further explanation for each picture.

So, in the first table I have our fixtures listed from week 9 – 14, with an x indicating my winner for the respective games. There is some colors, but don’t worry I will explain what everything is for and I would kind of like to know if you agree with these predictions, because my whole end result log are based on these predictions.

In the second table I have all the logs as it would change week by week if my predictions came true. If my predictions is wrong, I make adjustments accordingly and see how it effects the Sharks’s chances. This week for example, the purple indicates that I made all the right predictions, with the exception of bonus points…indicated by light purple.

In my third table, I have a Wish Log, this log is the log I would like to see come week 14. For this to happen some of my predictions on my “VS Call” table has to be incorrect and the teams highlighted in yellow has to take those games.

VS Call

How the Log would then look week by week!

My Wish Log

…and that was my easter weekend, but now we all know who to root for!!! What a cool season it would be if the Sharks can sneak into a semi final spot or even win the whole tournament from here.

  • @lostfish (Comment 9) : Yip, that gives us an immediate disadvantage as soon as every Super 14 tournament begins. Every other team, basically has 4 easy wins, we have 3. And in the past with the Reds also not really showing any fire power we had 3 out of 5.

Did we even win against the Reds, Cheethas and even the W.Force any of the times we got to the Semi’s? The Lions also gets a win against the Sharks every now and then. I wonder why that is, that we loose against these teams so often. Maybe a kop doktor for all of the Sharks won’t be such a bad idea.

  • @Letgo (Comment 2) : Morning Letgo, That could happen, Sharks losing to the Lions!! Hope it does not happen but it could.

On your article, the only realistic thing, is that yes, we may see a team go into the semi getting under 40 points on the log. Could Sharks do it? No doubt it will happen. Actually it wont. We should have got a bonus this past weekend and also if we got that win against the Tahs, which we should have, then it would have been more realistic to hope for a semi.

Just want to see us win as many as we can from here. Even though we wont make a semi, just enjoy us winning some games. ;-)

  • @Letgo (Comment 15) : I like the look of your plan I think though we can get 5 points from Lions Blues and Force games and 4 from stormers and 2 from bulls which will be enough for a semi. Like the cheetahs are for us the Lions are the for bulls so they might get nailed in that game I also feel that this year the semi final points target are going to be mid 30′s as opposed to 40 and while one side might make 40 points it is not going to be easy if you look at the top 4 bulls tahs saders and stormers they still have to play each other so there will be losses for half of them which brings them back to the pack i think we will be ok with 7 wins and 7/8 bonus points

  • @lostfish (Comment 9) : We should have won against the Cheetahs had Rory got all his kicks over. :x Also they had a full strength side against us, now they are 4 players out injured. Remember they too beat the Canes, no easy feat that, takes a good team to beat the Canes. They were looking competitive until they lost 4 of their players. After playing the Canes they lost Brussow to injury. Now with 4 out don’t see them win any games on tour. Not even if Juan goes over to help out.

No team in the S14 can lose 4 of their top players and expect to win much. Saders without Carter and McCaw don’t play as well either.

So hoping no more injuries to our Sharks. We will lose some speed now without Kanko. Though Alberts is a fantastic replacement at 8 but a lot slower.

  • Love the article…brilliant particularly like your week by week log…..will give it some thought and see how far we agree.

However on first glance it looks by your calculations that the Bulls may be in trouble. I notice you have them 4th and that is winning their next two games on tour. I think their match against the Reds is a huge match. I also think they are not going to beat the Chiefs on Saturday (thought the Chiefs were impressive against the Highlanders).

Does this mean the Bulls are in trouble ?

    Great work !

Btw…I know it’s all a little crazy, but it keeps the compition a little more tense and interesting for me. If the Sharks has no chance at all, I don’t like watching any of the other games. It gets pretty boring, like watching the Heiniken Cup, or the Air New Zeeland Cup. Whatever!

I’m still hoping for the impossible to happen and then we can be the star of the next mission impossible movie!

I think the Blues will probably be there this year actually. Three of their games will be 5 pointers…log pointers. W.Force, Cheetahs, Lions. That puts them at 35 already. Then there’s the Stormers this weekend, probable 4 and the Chiefs the final weekend. The Blues are the better of the two Kiwi teams, 4 more. That puts them at 43 with the Sharks game the only one they will definately loose.

Stormers gone…they are totally rubbish !

Bulls will get smashed on Saturday (0 points)….but then they have a Lions 5 pointer taking them to 33 points.

From there by my calculations they need only 2 from 4 and say eight points for 41 points and 4th place.

They are home if they beat the returning Reds…..however if they lose…..having to win two of these three fixturers versus the Sharks, Saders, Stormers could be tough.

If we had beaten the Tahs, 3 extra points (we picked up a bonus point there) had we got a bonus point this week then we would be sitting with 20 points on the log. Then think we would be in with a chance. ;-)

If we win all our remaining games without a bonus we land up on 36 that wont be enough. Need to pick up at least 3 bonus points on the way. We have not picked up one bonus point by scoring 4 tries. So for us to start doing it now, well that will be like a pressure cooker. ;-)

    Stormers – Auckland
    Force – Auckland
    Sharks – Tank
    Cheetahs – Bloem
    Lions – Ellis Park
    Chiefs – Auckland

From those games think Blues could win 4 but probably 5. Stormers could beat them if they get on top of their game this week. Not too sure though but they could. Sharks could. The rest think Blues will pick up 5 points. Blues will make a semi. My feeling. They will end up 4th or even 3rd.

  • @Puma (Comment 43) : I don’t think so.
For some reason they looked clueless this weekend. The Chiefs isn’t that easy to beat at home. And if you thinkabout it the Bulls was even lucky to beat the W.Force so maybe, just maybe, the wheels are starting to come of for the Bulls. Peaking to early?

I think it’s sometimes hard for a team that has had victories handed to them to start to dig deep and actually work for it. I’m not saying that the Bulls didn’t play really good rugby to get those victories, but you can’t deny that those victories was also served on a platter. This weekend the Bulls played like a rich boy waiting for the butler to bring him his breakfast in bed…its not always just going to come to you, especially when you’re a geust in someone elses house.

Also, without any funny analogies, I think teams have the Bulls figured out. This week getting over the advatage line was much harder for them and all the Blues had to do was cover Wynand Olivier from every pass Steyn gave. They didn’t even need to look outside Olivier since he never passes.

That was one of they’re big weapons and now, if teams are as smart as the Blues it will be nullified until the Bulls comes up with a new plan.

  • @McLovin (Comment 55) : Whatever  …you can use that excuse until the end of their tour.

They didn’t look tired, not maybe until the last 10min, unless they were mentally tired and you don’t get that from traveling.

Even when you’re jetlagged you should still put in a good performance. Or a decent but sluggish, tired performance. It was a bad, not so tired, clueless performance.

  • Can’t believe I’m defending the Bulls but here goes.

They cleaned up all the teams at Loftus so far except the Canes.

Outsmarted the Canes with pragmagtic percentage rugby. Talk about digging deep, that was it.

Crickey, I dislike them as much as the next non Bulls fan, but give them some credit.

Still joint top of the log with a game in hand. Hardly any wheels coming off.

  • @McLovin (Comment 61) : Yip, watch them games again. Not the Hurricanes, because they actually put up a fight.

Players fell of tackles and left open gaps like it was a Bulls birthday party. Yes they had to take those gaps, but they were there for them to take. It won’t be like that every game. Therefor they will have to start to work for those chances in the coming weeks.

    Cheetahs home 5 points
    Canes home 4 points
    Tahs away 0 points
    Reds home 4 points

Brumbies 39 points is that enough for the Semi’s i think YES

  • @Letgo (Comment 56) : Chiefs have too many injuries to be really competitive against the Bulls. Bulls will win this week Letgo have no doubts about it. Against the Reds that will be tougher. Then Reds have to travel. So have to see.

Stormers will have the hardest game this weekend against the Blues. Also must not start with Ricky. Stormers could win they have a good side but against the Blues it will be very tough.

Just shows how good they are. Make other teams look bad. Make things look easy. Signs of a great side.

  • @McLovin (Comment 63) : No, I was only hoping that maybe that’s what’s happening.

You’re right they played some great rugby in the first few weeks, as much as it hurts me to say it, but the teams they played so far didn’t react very well to the pressure the Bulls put on them. Instead they buckled and gave the Bulls easy victories.

Will the Bulls deliver more good games this season, for sure, I don’t doubt it. They are a quality team right now and as you rightly pointed out they deserve some credit.

Here you go Bulls kudo’s to your seven victories and jointly holding the top spot on the log.

Now go and eat dust against the Chiefs.

    Tahs home 4 points
    Cheetahs home 5 points
    Force away 4 points
    Stormers away 4 points
    Bulls away 1 point
    Brumbies 4 points

Crusaders total points 47 (seems too many) make it 43

losing to either the Tahs, Stormers or Brumbies as well.

    Still enough to qualify !

  • @Hertford Highlander (Comment 66) : Somehow think the Canes will beat the Brumbies, even in Canberra. Canes have a bye this week too, something they need. Was a tough tour here in SA then to face two good sides coming home. Canes to beat the Brumies my feeling. Brumbies were lucky to beat the Blues if it had not been for that intercept try. Also think Brumbies were lucky to beat the Sharks. Brumbies wont beat the Saders either and might fall to the Reds.

S14 getting exciting now. See a lot of us going up or way down on our bru pools..

  • Another reason the Reds was able to find that many holes in our defense was due to our forwards counter rucking, or hanging around the ruck in case the opportunity arose to counter ruck (which we do rather effectively).

Problem was, the Reds got some fast ball which forced us to commit two tacklers to a one on one tackle situation, allowing the Reds to break through the 10/12 and 12/13 channel, with Swaan running around like a headless chicken trying to assist everyone in defense.

I think one team will qualify for semis with less than 40 points

Saders, Bulls, Blues, Tahs look the favourites for Semi spots but who knows in what order ?

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 80) : Most of the line breaks in the 10-12 axis was actually because of slow forwards in the backline. I didn’t concentrate on that but Cooper ran past the Beast at least twice and I think around Smit and Jannie as well.

  • @Hertford Highlander (Comment 81) : Tahs, have to face:
Saders – Chrischurch = Saders win
Brumbies – Sydney = 50/50 not sure who will win here. But maybe if no win pick up 1 point
Landers – Invergargill – not too sure maybe a Tahs win 4 points
Chiefs – Hamilton – if Chiefs have the injured still out a Tahs win with 4 points. Chiefs could win though.
Canes – Sydney think a Canes win.

So looking at it here a definite 36 points. Maybe 40. Tahs should make the semi. Not too sure about the Brumbies.

For now it looks like: Bulls, Saders, Tahs. Then it could be Blues or Stormers. If Blues win this weekend then put the Blues in 4th spot or even 3rd spot and the Tahs at 4th.

I needed that, because it would have caused me a lot of dissapointment in the next few weeks.

They still suck though and the Sharks rule and will make the semi’s

  • @Hertford Highlander (Comment 81) : I think maybe the reds might also sneek in. We’re not really giving them any wins, yet they look like they can beat just about anyone. In fact, they did, they beat the Crusaders.

Lions, Stormers, Hurricanes, Highlanders…they can beat all these teams, not the Bulls, McLovin won’t allow talk like that  , but the other 4. that gives them 18 more points. 39 in total. They could do it. That’s why I want the Lions to have their upset game this weekend, they’re the only team, who still has to win, let alone cause an upset.
