Former Pretoria Boys High student Mthunzi “Fudge” Mabeta has put pen to paper with the Bulls Union, extending his current contract to the end of 2012. This follows hot on the heels of another young lock, Flip van der Merwe, opting to extend his Bulls stay up until the same point.
With all three of their stalwart Bok locks, Victor Matfield, Bakkies Botha and Danie Rossouw, approaching retirement, the Bulls have acted swiftly to retain the services of their up-and-coming youngsters. One who appeared to have slipped through the net, Juandre Kruger, is also on his way back, having played for Northampton in the UK for the last year.
The Bulls have seen a number of other talented second rowers seek greener pastures elsewhere over the past few seasons, though, with Hendrik Roodt (Waratahs), Adriaan Fondse (Stormers) and Cliff Milton (somewhere in France) the most notable losses.
Perhaps the most promising one of all, Wilhelm Steenkamp, is currently on loan to the Sharks and has featured regularly in John Plumtree’s match 22 this season.Tweet
