Muller is back

The good news to emerge from Sharks training yesterday was the return to fitness of Johann Muller, just as we predicted.

For the rest of the forward casualties picked up over the last few weeks, though, the picture is less rosy. Ryan Kankowski, as we know, is out for an indeterminate length of time with a thumb injury, while Keegan Daniel and Deon Carstens are still going to spend at least this week on the sidelines with shoulder and knee injuries respectively.

Alistair Hargreaves and John Smit, both of whom went off against the Reds, seem to have recovered well enough to play. It is likely that Muller will replace Wilhelm Steenkamp in the match 22, but there is still no certainty surrounding a replacement for Kankowski. Craig Burden is rumoured to be in the running to be the loose forward replacement, but without Carstens in the mix, that would leave the Sharks short of a forward replacement in any event, since the versaile former wing will no doubt be needed to cover hooker as well.

Justin Downey, Mike Rhodes and Skholiwe Ndlovu are all expected to start for the Sharks XV against the Pampas XV on Friday night, making it unlikely that any of them will feature for the Sharks proper a day later in Johannesburg. Plumtree seems to have a rabbit in his hat here and I am completely in the dark as to what it may be.

More on this one as it develops.

  • You wrote this article at some ridiculous hour so you weren’t thinking straight. There is no problem if Burden is on the bench. Carstens hasn’t featured for the last few games as Beast has been the main replacement. And I saw Beast last week and he was champing at the bit to play and wasn’t enjoying the break that much. And no Baldrick I am not name throwing, I did see him and chatted to him. Jannie, Bis and John to start, Burden and Beast on the bench. So Burden can come in to replace Bis or Botes. OK back to obscurity again, I just wanted to clear that up so there wouldn’t be mass panic this morning when people read your article.

  • Oh and while I am here, someone made a dig that I would hate Stefan moving to centre. I actually don’t mind, he is to good a player to take off the field, and anyone notice since the 15 jersey has been taken away from him the Sharks have won games. Pity it wasn’t done sooner.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 8) : damn lost my comment. So here goes again. Hello Pokkel. We won’t need Burden against the Lions at loosie. We would rather have the big boys to completely kill the only Lions strength, their forward pack. If we keep Wikus Cobus and Cleaver tied up with our giants, their backline will crack. Hopefully Earl Rose and Spencer start as they have made the Lions backline the mess it is.

  • @robdylan (Comment 10) : no i think it is important for the sharks xv to do well and keep combinations going for the Sharks CC campaign. The Sharks have enough backup to handle the Lions and bigger loose forwards will hurt the lions more than your lighties. The Lions only real strentgh is their loose trio, and if the Sharks big boys can hammer them backwards the game will be simple.

  • @try time (Comment 12) : I’m not sure I agree with you….the Lions have good loosies but the rest of their pack I wouldn’t call strong. If I read you correct you are saying we should attack with our backline and I don’t think our backline is creative enough to even crack the Lions defence regularly. Their backline might be very weak defensively but they will probably create more than the Sharks backline. We should probably play the same type of rugby against the Lions as we did against the Reds because if the game gets too loose it might not be in the Sharks favour.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 15) : no i am saying use our strength our forwards. The backline can play as crap as they normally do, we can get 4 tries with our forwards. The Sharks forward pack can get enough penalties by bashing the Lions for 80 minutes to keep them in their half. Then the gaps will open. The Sharks will be stupid if they start playing a kicking game.

  • @try time (Comment 3) : I didn’t think of that, you’re right, Sykes can move to flank and that’s probably a way better idea than putting Burden there.
Sykes can move to flank, which means maybe having W. Steenkamp and muller on the bench won’t be an awful idea.
Mvovo is not going to get a run anyway. Plumtree doesn’t seem keen on giving the guy a chance.

  • Here is my wish for the weekend. 75+% possession and half the tackle count of the Lions. This will mean our team will leave the field with five points and a fresh team to take on the bigger games to come. If Goode or Stefan start kicking then we play right into the Lions hands because it will free them up.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 15) : I don’t think we’ll have a problem to get a win against the Lions, getting the 4 tries? I’m not so sure about that.

If the Sharks play a positive game right from the start and put a few of the penalties into the corner instead of just going for the three, then we’ll do it easily and also take our first comfortable victory of the season.

But I have a feeling, especially after Plumtree’s comments about the Sharks taking the line-out instead of the points in the last minutes of the Reds game, that the Sharks will kick for the 3 until we’re at least 15 points ahead.

  • If you look back at the Sharks in the first half of the season, it was the kicking game that got us yellows and gave away tries. as we have seen the teams that hang onto the ball get the penalties going their way and they score when the opposition is battered. Look at how Stormers beat the Blues. Now if a bunch of poefters can do it why can’t the Sharks? lol.

  • @Letgo (Comment 20) : Yes that has disappointed me. The Sharks leave it to late to go for the Bonus Point tries. I have noticed with the new interpretation, going for 3 points has let the opposition off in all games. Instead of hammering away and letting the opposition start infringing and forcing the ref to pull out the yellow. Refs tend to reset after the 3 points are taken, so make the referee your 16th player by getting him peed off with the oppositions infringements.

He apparently enjoys his rugby now and lost motivation while playing here due to all the travel. All this according to some chef guy over at S24.

  • @try time (Comment 29) : you’re being very short-sighted here. Every time Plum picks a foreigner, import or player out of position, we lose an opportunity to further develop one of our own youngsters. It’s not just about beating the Lions.. that we should do anyway.

  • @robdylan (Comment 30) : As long as Plum sees a glimmer of a playoff chance, he isn’t going to gamble. He may change his tune when we are totally out of the comp. I am not being short sighted, I am just not getting stressed about stuff I can’t control. The Sharks XV is doing well, they need to win this weekend. So why mess them around if we don’t have to. The players are developing in that team as well. I also called for the youngsters to be used regularly, but I don’t have my head on the block each week. I agree though Plum is far too conservative. Ask yourself if the Sharks are going to lose because Rhodes justin or ndlovu aren’t on the bench. S14 coaches and players are shortsighted, one game at a time. You have read and seen that many times. So don’t call me that because I understand Plums thinking. If you remember I have been calling for Plum to use his youngsters for weeks now. But we know he won’t so lets look at what he will do rather, no need for an ulcer.

We have to work something out and fast or we are going to be worse off than the Lions. At least the Lions invested in some youngsters with potential. We have no-one that shows the same potentual, as far as I am aware. I suppose we only need to start worrying about it when the Sharks s14 are blown out the water, or the last full blown cc. But before year end the Sharks need to have a Fly half with first class game time under his belt.

@try time (Comment 36) : i agree on keeping the ball in hand. but this is far from given in this Sharks team.

Yesterday I was watching this game against Highlanders. Dying minutes, nothing to lose, Sharks need to keep ball in hand and patiently build, and Adi kicks (fortunately kick bounces off the Highlanders player straight back into Adi’s hands – that was so funny but epitomises Sharks attitude to keeping the ball in hand).

Ross’s form has dipped a bit-having a niggle and then not getting game time-but he will bounce back and will perform for us Our problem is at inside centre i have heard rumours of a number 12 who is highly rated by the national selectors-not JDV- joining the Sharks Trying to confirm that. What also might just work for us is to let Guy play inside centre for a bit gives us right-F/H and left-inside centre -foot kicking options

  • @Pokkel (Comment 48) : I really don’t know. I haven’t seen much of the youngsters but I know the Cronjes weren’t awe inspiring last year. and if you look at the shocking flyhalves in the other SA unions, there can’t be much out there. The only solution would be an innovative coach that will change the backlines role so a flyhalf in the traditional sense is not needed. plum however is not innovative. here is an off the bat option make ruan your flyhalf while playing scrumhalf and have three centres. it will work with the current law interpretations, but not if we go back to last years interpretations. look how good peter grant has been, whereas in years past he was a good centre but average at best at flyhalf.

  • @try time (Comment 66) : That is quite a mind shift but not realistic IMO. Look at the S14 so far and the teams that have performed are the teams that still have a general at 10. I still think a decent 9 – 10 combo makes can turn a average team into a great team and vice versa…a great team can be average if 9 & 10 aren’t performing.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 67) : I only offered it as an idea as we have no capable flyhalves in SA at the moment. Even Morne Steyn has been looking poor of late. Peter Grant has had the best showing in the 10 jersey and I think it is because of his centre experience. As long as the team has a good place kicker (Ruan Pienaar) and a player that can get the ball up field quickly when clearing out set pieces on your own try line(stefan/pat) a creative centre can cover the flyhalf position. Quaid Cooper wasn’t a flyhalf last year, but he is by far the best Aussie flyhalf at the moment.

  • @try time (Comment 68) :
Interesting, with the laws as they are now, ball in hand is king, especially if that ball crosses the advantage line by a line break or a forward carry and is retained. You might be onto something here.
