According to a report on the Saracens website, Deon Carstens has signed for the English club.
It has now been confirmed that Carstens will leave after the 2010 Super 14 for a two year deal.
Deon has been a great servant of Sharks rugby and is known as a guy who improves team spirit. His departure comes at a time when the front row stocks of the Sharks are looking good.
Nevertheless, Deon will be missed and on behalf of Sharksworld, I would like to wish him all the best for his time in England.

First eeeehhhh
another one why
money i guess
leave us alone please if it carrys on like this will we have enough players left for the game or do we go beg and
borrow
@Chaz (Comment 2) : deon is in the twilight of his career, and there are youngsters who can take his place in the team, pat cilliers is one obvious example
@war1 (Comment 3) : true i always like when the guys go and make a choice to go
i believe it is the best for them but for sharks its bad news me say
@war1 (Comment 3) : well maybe the youngster will now get their chance in the S14 so we can work for the S15
@Chaz (Comment 2) : you must also remember that for Deon it may be a new and good work experience.
there is something romantic about the player devoting his entire life to one province but often change is good.
Having said that Deon will be missed.
Well Carstens good luck hope you enjoy your stay there and just come back to the sharks me friend
@rekinek (Comment 6) : agree but still
and like you say a good change does wonders
Now how in the H!@l did i get that in blue
@Chaz (Comment 5) : not that deon was making the match 22 recently.
@rekinek (Comment 10) : true but it always
to see our players go and to me looks like a couple of them
@rekinek (Comment 10) : tell me something now how did i get the comment name in blue
@Chaz (Comment 9) : @rekinek (Comment 10) : i wonder myself
till later
@Chaz (Comment 14) : ciao
@rekinek (Comment 10) : Injury will do that to you.
@Baldrick (Comment 16) :
You travelling to the Sharks XV game in Dbn?
@Baldrick (Comment 16) : forgot about that. i guess he is before Craig Burden in pecking order.
Pity it isn`t Jannie . . .
@KSA Shark © (Comment 17) : updates! updates!
Deon’s ability to scrum on both sides of the scrum when needed, combined with his ball skills and all around loose play makes him a superb prop for the bench in the modern game. Those that have known me here through the years, know that Deon is one of my favourite Sharks, always has been. When playing he is quiet and just goes about getting the job done. Deon has always been a fantastic servant to Sharks and SA Rugby. Let’s not forget that like John Smit, Deon has also played all three front row positions for the Sharks at Currie Cup level.
@rekinek (Comment 20) :
Exactly why I was asking the question.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 22) : Hola KSA!
@KSA Shark © (Comment 22) : you r pretty clued up with info and all… on the suparugby site its stated that the cheetahs youngster sias ebersohn (flyhalf) has signed with the sharks. Can you or rob confirm that?? REALLY talented youngster!
@Dancing Bear (Comment 23) : Hey!!!
@VanWilder (Comment 24) :
Someone mentioned that last night. I was hoping it was the brother rather than him. Will go and have a look.
@VanWilder (Comment 24) :
You got a link for me?
@KSA Shark © (Comment 25) : Give my best to your better half when you get a chance!
@KSA Shark © (Comment 27) : http://www.suparugby.co.za/pages/Default.asp?More=Ebersohn%20a%20Goode%20bet%20-%2015%20April%202010&FeatureID=15239&SectionID=168
at school sias was the better player.
@Dancing Bear (Comment 28) :
Oh you know this is a family site or else i’d have a comeback about giving her MY best.
Thanks will do, she is on the couch watcing ” Without a trace”
@rekinek (Comment 18) : Nope, he’s a prop and Burden is a hooker.
lets be honest as great a player he is, he isn’t going to get much game time in super rugby with beast and john ahead of him. this will do him good and he may be back in a sharks jersey again as props do have a longer shelf life.
@VanWilder (Comment 29) :
HA you see it is Suparugby not SA Rugby.
Bester the bouncer at it again.
let me go look.
@Baldrick (Comment 16) : he wasn’t going to make the bench even if he wasn’t crocked. unless he planned to play tight head.
@Baldrick (Comment 31) : that much I know but having Smit in the starting lineup you don’t need to have a second hooker on the bench and you can move the guys around.
@Baldrick (Comment 31) : Carstens has played Hooker for the Sharks in the Currie Cup before. He is actually quite a good hooker and his throw ins were pretty good considering he does not do it on a regular basis.
@try time (Comment 34) : at the beginning of the year there was a spot at loosehead as the Sharks had one too many tightheads
@KSA Shark © (Comment 22) : just remembered I think Letgo is going.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 33) : jip, i know he can get himself ahead of the pack… just thought it could make alot of sense for us to buy a young flyhalf with the makings of beeing a “goode” one…
@Chaz (Comment 2) : only way to stop them leaving for europe is if by some slim chance a volcano goes off in iceland and stops all flights in and out of europe. oh hang on that has happened.
@rekinek (Comment 37) : he must get his pension while he can, and it is time for pat to step up.
Its the right time for Deon to move on. Good luck out there boetie.
@try time (Comment 40) : eeee you right
Where is Charlie haven’t heard from him in a while
@Chaz (Comment 44) : injured
@VanWilder (Comment 39) :
I have aired my views in a seperate article.
@rekinek (Comment 45) :
@Chaz (Comment 47) : it’s a joke. We joke that Charlie is in fact Adi (and you never know
and Adi is injured right now.
Perhaps Wpw will know what’s up with Charlie.
@rekinek (Comment 48) :
OFFICIAL SHARKS PRESS RELEASE
Deon Carstens will be leaving The Sharks after the culmination of the 2010 Super 14 competition to link up with UK Club side Saracens on a two year deal. The prop, who is one of the most experienced players in the team, having earned 168 caps since making his debut back in 2001, is a senior, highly-respected and well-liked member of the squad. A strong scrummager who has a surprising turn of speed and an ability to score tries, has amassed an impressive tally of 13 tries in his career with The Sharks.
Despite being contracted until the end of December 2010, The Sharks have generously released him to leave earlier, in the interest of his own development as a player.
Commenting on his departure, Carstens said, “It is quite strange to think that my previous game for The Sharks was against the Waratahs some weeks back and it is unfortunate that injury has meant that it is going to be my last. It certainly will be a new challenge for me, swopping the warm Durban weather for snow and freezing temperatures.
“It has a good life for me here in Durban and I have loved being a part of The Sharks setup for these past 10 years, so it is hard to leave. But I need to move on and experience a new challenge and get out of my comfort zone. Luckily for me, I will be joining up with a bunch of South African players and of course, Bradley Barritt, who I know from the time he played with me for The Sharks.”
On behalf of The Sharks, CEO Brian van Zyl added, “Deon has been a faithful member of The Sharks for a decade and has always been an important part of the team. We will miss his enthusiasm and team spirit and wish him all the best in his new venture with Saracens.”
