Swannie crocked again?

It appears as though Riaan Swanepoel is once again in doubt, having picked up an ankle injury against the Lions.

Sharks coach John Plumtree doesn’t seem too concerned about the injury and will give the big inside centre until Thursday to recover, but it does strike me as somewhat concerning that Swanepoel seems very injury-prone at the moment. I don’t have all the info to hand, but it feels as though this is the third or fourth time this season that he has picked up an injury and been in doubt prior to a game.

Could this be symptomatic of some other problem, perhaps? Swannie gets through a massive mount of work every week and it’s not really surprising that the knocks take their toll, but I’ve heard the theory expounded once or twice that he might just be carrying a little too much bulk at the moment. That could go some way to explaining the high incidence of knee and ankle problems he seems to pick up. Swannie’s official weight on SA Rugby is around 97kg, but looking at the way he’s built these days, I’d be quite surprised if he isn’t playing at 100 or more right now.

Maybe the Sharks coaching and conditioning team need to take another look at this situation and see if they can get Swannie to shed a few kilos. I reckon it would do his game the world of good and hopefully extend his career in the process.

That’s not to say that I’m not crossing fingers, holding thumbs and praying furiously that he’ll be passed fit to play the Blues this weekend. Andries Strauss would be the logical replacement at 12 should Swanepoel be ruled out.

Other players carrying knocks after a bruising forward encounter in Joburg are loose forwards Jean Deysel and Willem Alberts, but neither is expected to miss the Blues match. Mike Rhodes has been placed on standby and will move up from the Vodacom Cup squad if required.

  • I also thought he looked a bit podgy when he was running up field on saturday. his bulk also forces him to play the crash ball game.

  • Yaso but the Sharks have some average centres on their books (the exception being Adi of course)

What about Waylon at 12?? Anything is better than Strauss at 12.

  • He looks unfit to, compared to the other guys, swannie looks out of breath much to fast. He looks tired on the field after about 15/20 minutes and then, even though he works really hard, he doesn’t seem to get in place as soon as needed.

  • Tharks backline isn’t great anyway. I’d be more concerned if either Alberts or Deysel can’t play Saturday.

  • Let me just throw this out there and see what people thinks… :|

I think our back line did pretty well last weekend. We created a lot of opportunities, which we haven’t done for a while. Yes, we also botch almost every one of those opportunities, but it’s nice to see that the Sharkies actually had a chance to mess up opportunities created by the back line.

Lambie was the best and probably created most of the space, even when he didn’t get into a gap himself, he put the players outside of him into space. Swannie had a couple of nice runs and even though Stefan was one of the main culprits in messing up opportunities he also created 2 or three himself.

If they sort out silly things like handling and communication,…and some decision making, then we’ll see a big improvement this weekend.

  • i really hope Sharks sign JDV….and that Adi gets back soon…..and of course Butch and BJ and bobs your aunt!

I see Plumtree in The Witness this morning saying the sharks turnaround due to the Sharks front row change with Smit away from 3 .

I wonder if any bloggers here may want to apologise….especially that blogger who calls me Cant 10.

Blues are erratic….smash them in the pack and the trys will come….swing it wide early and blues will attack from broken play.

He was quite happy to play ‘off the bench’ when Fourie arrived because Grant had the inside lane at 12 before De Waal got injured.

But my 1 st love is the Boks…..so am always completely non bias….in my career i had occassion to spend a lot of time in Durban on business….and we had a Corporate box there at the rugby. I got to love the sharks brand ….and players like Butch James ,Mark Andrews, Teichmann and Adi Jacobs AT 13 are all time favorites of mine. Riaan played well against the lions, but probably needs to get his body sorted forcing him to start could make matters even worse for his injuries, he is not 100% fit i think. Just keep Willem and Deysel out of contact each week, they get more than enough every saturday.

Just had to put that out there, we have had comments that said basically that, but specifically the way the Sharks played in that second half will make it hard for attacking teams like the Blues to be a big threat.

Swannie is a reliable player but creates little and also a bit slow. You can see there is a lot of commitment from his side but on execution he is coming short.

Oupa far below his best and JP really really had an awful game.
