Lions turn on their biggest fan

Not content with almost single-handedly running the once-mighty Golden Lions Rugby Union into the ground over the last three years, CEO Manie Reynecke has reached a new low in effectively cutting off one of the most-respected and longest-running fan websites on the flimsiest of pretexts.

Regular visitors to this site will know all about Walter Language’s LionsWorld site, formerly known as Transvaal.co.za, a site that has been up-and-running since 1996, virtually pre-dating the Internet itself in South Africa. Walter is perhaps the most passionate and dedicated Lions supporter of them all and has spent what must seem like a lifetime giving his all in support of his team. He has built up a loyal following and is a respected commentator and source of information – in fact, an institution of Lions rugby, if ever there was such a thing.

All of that counted for nothing today, though, as Reynecke saw fit to revoke LionsWorld’s media accreditation, on the basis that somebody posted a comment on the site deemed critical of the CEO. Clearly Reynecke doesn’t believe in a free press, despite what the constitution says and on the eve of Freedom Day, I find it disturbing in the extreme that the worst CEO in the world should be allowed to get away with pulling a stunt like this. Making matters even worse, he didn’t even have the balls to contact Walter himself, but rather left the unpleasant task to his lovely media liaison instead.

Here’s the real irony, though – exactly the same comment that saw LionsWorld lose their accreditation appeared on the Lions official website as well! It came from (yet another) disgruntled fan who, sick and tired of years of non-performance and maladministration, suggested a petition to unseat Reynecke and his red dri-mac from the job that he seems incapable of doing justice. The question that begs asking is this: if Reynecke is so determined to stamp out any criticism of the piss-poor job that he’s doing, what is he going to do about his own official website? Shut that one down as well? We wait with baited breath…

On a personal note, I’d like to wish Walter all the best. I know a kindred spirit when I see one and even though we support different teams, I can only imagine what he must be going through right now. The wheel will turn, though and tyrants tend to get their just desserts in the end.

  • No Worries Walter. There will soon be a new CEO at the Lions and hopefully the new one will have more than 2 braincells.

  • Sorry to hear this, Walter has always been informative and supporting of even dare I say it, that twit that tests all our patience, Reynecke. I still want to know how he has managed to keep his job, for as long as he has. My only question is how long we (as Lions supporters) must endure this poor administration, unfortunately Kevin De Klerk with all his bravado, has been a bit of a toothless tiger. I am still of the opinion that the Lions should float the company on the stock exchange and get some ” professional management” in place, who answer to share holders and then maybe we will see some action. There must be lots of businessmen in JHB that would jump at the opportunity!!

Get yourself a new name, as well as a disguise and we’ll see if we can send you on a Sharksworld ticket. Then again, once they read this, I doubt we’ll be welcome either

  • It takes a lot of dedication to not only support but stay passionate and write about a team that loses more often than when they win and that has been so badly mismanaged by useless administrators.

Reyneke must be paranoid if he has done this over someone making a comment on a message board.

They’re now apparently getting the knives out for him cos he likes to go out for a few drinks every now and then, Didn’t they do any research on the guy before hiring him> Dick is a LEGEND when it comes to the party afterwards. Always has been.

How is it possible that this can happen at the GLRU? All those calls for Luyt to make a comeback don’t seem so ridiculous now. I know he wasn’t exactly Mr Democracy, but at least he had old-world values, common sense and the guts to clean out that place – something it desperately needs.

Reyneke may be a bufoon but Dick is….. well Dick is just that if he does those sorts of things while on tour with a team that can hardly afford any distractions when you look at their performance.

I’ll repost it here. Walter let me know if that is a problem please.

“I honestly believe that the Lions rugby union is in the worst shape that we have ever seen it before and there are a lot of underlying factors that you as the public don’t know about.

I have been reading all the local websites and am closely linked with the current coaching staff.

One does not have to be a rocket scientist to see that all is not well and that it needs to change. There is no way that Dick Muir can do the job that is required from him, and be successful with all his current responsibilities. He has been signed on as Head of coaching at the Lions ( meaning total command of all the coaching within the Union). To date this has not happened and most of his energy is spent on the Lions S/14 side. He is serving as Backline coach at the Boks, he has his own rugby academy in partnership with Johan Ackerman , he also has ties with the Murray Mexted academy in NZ.

One can see the connections with the NZ base players and staff. And this brings one to the poor performance the team had during the S/14 tour down-under. The information is not privileged anymore as it was witnessed by all the players and management during the Australian and NZ leg of the S/14. Some of the Management and senior Players could not wait for the daily proceedings to come to an end so that they could proceed with the “nightly adventures”. This was made much easier with Carlos and Wayne Taylor being NZ staff as they were very familiar with the nightlife in NZ. Dick Muir changed the accommodation while in Australia, moving the team to a topless beach area, resulting in the Lions losing badly to the Waratahs and 70 + points were conceded .

According to some of the other staffmembers, the way Hans Coetzee was treated on tour was a total disgrace, he was pushed aside and was not included in any or very little of the team discussions and activities. Hans is known as a very levelheaded person and is the father figure in the team. He is the one that brings discipline and the sense of stability , and the player can relate to this .

Once again we have management that have befriended players and spend time afterhours. This can never be a healthy situation as everyone else in the team can see this, and there will always be a perception about this. It is a known fact that there are special relationships between Dick and some players and he has been seen in and about town on many occasions, with these players. .

We all understand that we just cannot carry on changing the coach and management but we must be realistic about what is happening and need to react now to avoid the Loffie scenario. People must understand that to live in Gauteng is not easy and people don’t understand the culture in Gauteng. A Coach that does not come out of the Gauteng region, will never understand this environment.

At the last Lions annual meeting Manie stated that Hans Coetzee will coach the Currie cup side, and this was confirmed by all present. But it has been proven that Manie makes decisions on a popularity base and not because of a business decision . We as Lions fanes just cannot believe that “YOU” Kevin de Klerk can accept what is happening to the union and live with it. I don’t know Hans personally, but looking at his track record, in coaching, as well as recognising young talent, he should be the man in the coaching job, whereas a “Director of coaching” should concentrate on the coaching structures, within the union.”

  • Well bring that old petition right over here and to every other self respecting rugby loving website that’s not be subjected to such an idiocracy such as the snoiL hierarchy.

Time for the top brass in snoiL country to pay for there crimes against rugby supporters. (btw, I am in no way a snoiL supporter, but absolutely loath seeing our country’s rugby being subjected to the embarrassing defeats suffered by our franchises)

Next petition to go out against any form of rugby that can in any way be construed as international rugby from the Tjietas (unless it’s playing a team like Lithuania – our newest record holders).

  • I’m always slow to condemn a man based on hearsay.

Maybe Dick has been hitting the bottle a bit hard of late, but given his team’s performance, is that so shocking?

I trust that the truth will eventually emerge, and I hope he will be cleared, but in any event, I think he is already a goner – a scapegoat for a very sick union.

  • Hasn’t it been known for a fair while that Muir likes the drink and women?

Most Sharks fans rate Muir highly as a coach I would say. How can you not. I certainly do and tbh I’m biased and reluctant to criticise him because of this.

For things to get really out of control, as it appears they have. It points to a loss of direction and control, both on his part and those above him. He should be subject to the same disciplinary process a player is, if things outside rugby start impacting their performance as a coach.
I don’t think he would get away with this stuff under Stroodle (however much many on here dislike him). Even if I’m wrong and he did, it clearly didn’t impact performance his performance with us.

He obviously needs some discipling. But the Lions are in a tough situation here, he’s the one that has signed most of these youngsters and they expect him to build a team around them similar to what he did at the Sharks. The Lions must fear any appropriate action being taken – because he can just leave and a number of other sides would take him.

After reading this, I think a little less of him tbh. And wonder how both the Lions or any other side will keep him under control, now that very few have any leverage over him – that they had “before he made it as a coach”.

And this stuff that has been confirmed by people who where on tour??????????

Some of the Management and senior Players could not wait for the daily proceedings to come to an end so that they could proceed with the “nightly adventures”. This was made much easier with Carlos and Wayne Taylor being NZ staff as they were very familiar with the nightlife in NZ. Dick Muir changed the accommodation while in Australia, moving the team to a topless beach area, resulting in the Lions losing badly to the Waratahs and 70 + points were conceded .

  • Well well well. Someone who has a gripe posts a totally one-sided and riduculously worded post here and everybody now believes what they read. If you cannot see the malicousness in this post then I fear you are naive! These guys are posting this everwhere! If Walter had his accreditation taken away, I would support it because he clearly is a negative influence, and I think the CEO did the right thing to remove his accreditation! Who would give a media pass to a chap that is doing everything to spread rumours about you because he, for some reason, has a gripe against you and run his site as a platfrom to attack you? If you visit his forum then there is hardly any discussion about the players – everything is CEO’s fault! Get real! His forum is so one-sided you have to be blind not to see behind it. Walter is hiding behind his site and his apparent loyalty (biggest fan se gat!) to try and orchestrate a revolt.

What does Walter know about running a Union? Hey – let’s get rid of Brian van Zyl as well – the Sharks lost 5 in a row! This has been the history of the GLRU – always a power struggle going on.

How utterly pathetic!! Oh, here is some more news – Manie was not the captain of his u/9 rugby team – clearly unfit to be a CEO. Add this to your pathetic attempts Walter and outfit.

And as far as the comments in post 94 goes, my site’s sole purpose is to report at the goings on at the Lions, mostly about the matches, and unfortunately we’ve had a very poor last half of 2009 and first half of 2010, so it’s only natural to look for reasons, and one has to come to the conclusion that the buck stops at the top.

I felt I had to register here to offer another perspective, but clearly there is just one train of thought here. And that is a one-sided, malicious attempt by someone with a hidden agenda. If results only define success, then let’s get rid of van Zyl, because as a Sharks supporter I am pissed of with our position on the log. So many players bought the last couple of years, and they barely scraped the lions? Anyway, I have no intention to defend anyone. But clearly this is no ordinary fan or fans at work here. Stop talking crap. Your sole agenda here has been to villify someone you dont know because of information he has received and shared in his capacity as blogger.

Crawl back under that rock. Bloody agent.

“I’m certainly not orchestrating a revolt, but I can clearly see that our CEO doesn’t know what he is doing, why shouldn’t I be allowed to say that?”

    THEN

“I agree that I don’t know how to run a union, but neither does our CEO..”

I’m not seeing the contradiction here?

More than that, they should do the honourable thing and resign.
There goes Keo’s media accreditation.

  • Some support from the Sunday Times today as well.

Almost as disturbing as losing so many matches in a row was the recent decision of the Lions to revoke the media accreditation of arguably their most loyal fan. The webmaster of lionsworld.co.za was barred from attending matches after the members’ forum on the website featured a call for the resignation of Lions chief executive Manie Reyneke. Kicking freedom of the press into touch is bad enough, Manie, but nailing one of the team’s last remaining fans is, frankly, daft and in tune with the shoddy and amateurish way you’ve run the union.
