Sharks XV team shows 4 changes for semi

Sean Everitt has named his side to face the Blue Bulls in this weekend’s Vodacom Cup semi-final on the Loftus Versveld C-field. While there is good news in the return of Louis Ludik to the squad, the absence of big-name players in Wiehahn Herbst and Waylon Murray may cause some concern.

The return of Keegan Daniel to the Super 14 squad means that Mike Rhodes drops back into the Sharks XV side and he will start at blindside flank. Justin Downey moves to the back of the scrum and Luvo Lusaseni to the bench as a result. Up front, Julian Redelinghuys takes over at tighthead prop from Herbst, with Dale Chadwick the front-row reserve.

Murray, who started in the unfamiliar inside center position last week, is mysteriously absent from the lineup, with young Arno van Zyl, who has been on the bench for the last two weeks, stepping into the number 12 jersey to partner stalwart Jean Stemmet. The elevation of Luzuko Vulindlu to the Sharks bench mean a welcome return at right wing for Sbura Sithole, while Mark Richards will again play fullback after a promising first start in the position last week.

Jermoe Pretorius returns to the bench after missing out last week (ankle injury) while former Lions player Ludik now appears to be finally over the troubles caused by his catastrophic knee injury sustained against the British Lions last year.

  • @rekinek (Comment 4) : Herbst would help them more. Julz is a good prospect, but he’s still a little green.

I wonder if Herbst is injured

  • :?: especially in light of your earlier column re the S14 and VC squads.
I hope Ludik is really over his injury.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 6) : Sabz has been playing club rugby for Rovers the last few weeks. Hard on the lad, but there are a lot of good props coming up through the ranks now.

He only converted form the second row about 18 months ago anyway, so he has a way to go.

Harsh on him, he has made huge improvements from the start of the u21 competition last year to the last few games I saw him play.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 8) : I think we need to face facts… we’re definitely not going to be able to keep all our young props. Hard to shoehorn Cilliers, Herbst, Chadwick, Redelinghuys and Nhlapo into just three spots, especially if you then add Beast (still a youngster himself) and the seniors to the equation. Also doesn’t bode that well for getting BJ back…

  • We really are in a fortunate position when it comes to the engine room. I’m sure we will lose a few guys but who can blame talented players with aspirations for moving on when they clearly wont get a decent look in.
    Outa here
    Ciao.

  • I’m guessing Murray didn’t qualify to play the semi’s due to lack of voda-cup game time.

Any news on Herbst yet? Or is he the fail-safe for the Sharks (as to not have our fitness coach on the bench in case of late replacements)

  • Hi guys..

Just saw on BJ’s twitter that he won’t be joining up with the Stormers, but mentioned he wants to play S14 rugby again!

    There is hope!

  • Why isn`t Murray on the Bench for the Sharks then in Vulindlu`s place? At least he has some experience even if he is out of shape . . .

Just watched Boots an All. How I would love the Sharks to win just to wipe that condescending smile off Naas`s face.

At the start of the week I predicted the Bulls by about 36 but the gloves are off now . . . Sharks better perform tomorrow night.
