Sharks licking their wounds

Both Willem Alberts and Jean Deysel look increasingly likely to miss out on the Sharks’ game against the Stormers this weekend.

John Plumtree confirmed in an interview with John Bishop of the Witness that Alberts’s ankle, dodgy before the Loftus game, was duly re-injured on Saturday night and that the big former Lion is very unlikely to face the Stormers. Deysel went off with an arm injury and will need to have a scan to determine the extent of the damage.

This comes hot on the heels of confirmation that Bismarck du Plessis will be out of action for at least 3 months, but perhaps longer as he recovers from neck surgery.

Plumtree revealed in a different interview that he is far from pleased with the form of flyhalf Andy Goode and that the Sharks “will need to buy more wisely in future”, or words to that effect. Way to boost team morale, Plum! Let’s hope you will put your money where your mouth is, at least and pick someone different against the Stormers.

With three of the stalwarts behind the Sharks’ forward revival now unlikely to play, though, it probably won’t matter who they pick at flyhalf against the high-flying Capetonians – whoever he is, he’ll never get his hands on the ball.

  • After the game on Saturday Night I couldn’t help but think, the Sharks are their own worst enemies. Plum was basically denigrating poor old Goode , who let’s face it is nothing special, however he never bought himself and he has a couple of games to go, so why publicly humiliate him, not great management. Then the on going problem for the Sharks their lack of ability to score tries, again has to lie at the door of too me, still our biggest embarrassment in SA rugby, Mr Streuli. The Sharks have no playmaker in their backline, Swanepoel just bashes it up all day and against good defense is rendered useless. Time to find somebody who can have a bit of imagination both on, as well as off the field!! I understand injuries are a problem and Adi might have made a difference, but what about a back up plan. The Natal teams of old were known for running rugby and the ability to score tries out of nothing, maybe time to try it again, it’s working well for the Stormers and Bulls, yes even the Bulls backline are running the ball, and scoring Bonus points something that is costing the Sharks big time.

  • @wpw (Comment 2) : Basically said he was not up too standard and that they must be more careful when looking for talent, I imagine its more of a dig at Streuli than Goode, but still not professional.

  • Wow. That is very unprofessional… The Sharks should have gone all out to sign JL Potgieter from the Cheetahs last year.

  • @wpw (Comment 4) : I think they would have been better off with that youngster, that the Stormers bought from the Free State, Lionel Cronje, got a bit big for his boots earlier in the season, with his drinking episode, but you guys have a very talented flyhalf there, one for the future, that’s for sure.

I agree that he is talented. As for the incident where he got drunk and involved in a brawl, what about Ricki Januarie being caught drinking while driving??
He wasn’t suspended (or dropped) was he?? The double standards disgusts me.

  • @wpw (Comment 6) : Agree, but I think they wanted to put this oke in his place early on, may just have got too big for his boots and they may have just given up on Ricky.

  • The injuries are not very good news at all.

I know Kanko is back, but without Alberts, Deysel and Bissy we are not going to dominate the Stormers. The Beast did not look like he is match fit against the Bulls, which is understandable considering he hasn’t played a full game for a while.

John Smit, Craig Burden, Jannie du Plessis, Steven Sykes, Johann Muller, Jacques Botes, Keegan Daniel, Ryan Kankowski just seems a lot less intimidating than John Smit, Bismarck du Plessis, Jannie du Plessis, Steven Sykes, Johann Muller, Jacques Botes, Jean Deysel and Willem Alberts.

Let’s hope the guys get through the niggles and are ready for Burger and co.

And I just read on News24 that Johan Smit might also be out. He went for a neck scan.

    Sadly,spot on.

Players don’t buy or pick themselves: the coaches must take the heat. All told, the selection and buying strategy at the Sharks shows a distressing lack of foresight or vision. For example, there are a number of young flyhalves better than what we currently have, yet our only investment was to buy short-term solutions like Hernandez or Goode.

Couple that with the coach’s stubborn and forlorn refusal to acknowledge that the rule changes have changed the game (especially with regard to the desirability of retaining possession versus kicking, and it is no wonder that we cant buy a try or produce any flowing play.

My pet peeve is that we chose an ageing fullback who has never played 13 over a young Bok. I have NEVER seen a successful team with a 13 whose first instinct is to kick.

  • Really not professional by Plum for speaking to the press about Goode. No matter how well he plays or not. Actually he came to save our butts really. Not matter if he was up to the S14 level or what. You never talk about your players to the press.

Goode must feel reall terrible to read this. Very daft of Plum to do that.

Well we are going to be in huge trouble this Saturday without Alberts and Deysel that is for sure. Now read on News24 that John Smit has gone for a neck scan too. If we don’t have John, Alberts and Deysel we are in for a big hiding against the Stormers. Wont really be much of match really now that we have so many injuries.

  • Really hope all is well with our Captain after his neck scan. Not that it matters anymore for the Sharks we are out of it. Thinking for the Tri-Nations. Really hope nothing wrong with his neck.

  • @Whindy (Comment 1) : @Big Fish (Comment 9) :

Cannot help but agree with both of you.

I said many times the Sharks lack strike-runners which may have even let you get away without a decent playmaker in the midfield – but you do not.

Only in Plum or Straeuli’s mind can your play Kockett, one of the best 9′s (if not the best 2 seasons ago) off the bench, a useless Goode in place of Pienaar at 10 (and no Pienaar has never ‘insisted’ to play 9 exclusively – from his own mouth) and somehow justify Terblance – a decent enough 15 – at outside center…

  • Now that Bismarck is out of the Tri Nations I wonder who would be back up hooker??

Liebenberg surely has to get a call up. Then there is Andries Strauss, Gary Botha!!

    Nah Rob.

If they do select him then I’m afraid it is not for rugby reasons!!

How much rugby has he played over the last 2-3 seasons??

Botha, Liebenberg and Strauss deserve a chance.

Hell, I’d even select Deon Fourie ahead of him!! :???:

  • @Pokkel (Comment 17) : I wouldn’t pick him, but Div will.

Let’s just remember that the fascination with Chilli as a Bok started long before Divvie took over, though. I feel for the kid. Pushed too far, too soon… and instead of seeing the whole of the moon, he’s just seen his own hole :)

    So who is too blame??

Jake the Snake or are we going to blame it on the politicians (I know, lets not go down that road)

He was VERY talented at U21 level but the injuries and being pushed too soon hasnt helped his cause!!

  • @wpw (Comment 15) : By ” backup hooker” are you saying you think John Smit will be selected as first choice hooker?

Surely Liebenberg is in a lot better shape than him at the moment and Big Vic can take over the captaincy easily.

  • @wpw (Comment 23) : No need to get upset. I`m just thinking if Smit can`t lead the Sharks to success who says he can lead the boks?
As for best hooker in SA . . . I rate him about 3rd at the moment.

He can`t play tighthead, BJ proofed it end of last year.
He can`t take Shrek or Beast` position in the bok team either, for obvious reasons.

Possible bok 15 right now :

    Crusty the Clown
    Nokwe
    Jacques
    Olivier
    Habana
    Steyn
    Fourie
    Assegaai
    Juan
    Big Vic
    Bekker
    Incredible Schalk
    Brock Harris
    Tiaan Liebenberg
    Shrek

I know this won`t be the team, but you can do a lot worse . . .
