Another Big Fish lost…through the shark-nets. ..if all you read can be assumed true.

According to newspaper reports, Butch revealed in an interview with Bath Chronicle that his chances to try and secure a place in the WC squad for 2011 were foiled by the “scandalous” way of negotiations by the Sharks Union.

Apparently the union abruptly stopped negotiations and made him look like a fool at his current union and with his teammates.

The contract was apparently completed in March already, but was withdrawn at the last minute due the price tag Bath put on this ex-Sharks Player.

Butch had no bad words for the way Bath handled the negotiations, but is obviously not very impressed with his former union’s ways.

However, according to Brian van Zyl, Butch contacted the union for a return. Then Bath wanted to know what the Union would be willing to cough up for Butch. The Union were not prepared to do that, because we they not compensated for Butch when he went to Bath. What, according to Van Zyl was weird, was the fact that Butch indicated he wanted to return home, yet he signed for a further two years with his current club and apparently wanted a pricy payment for his return.

Cheerio Butch…

I was a huge Butch fan, but could this be a blessing in disguise? I MEAN, he is a walking injury and over the “legal” age too….maybe he should look at a retirement package at the Stormers?

  • @war1 (Comment 4) : Erm, hows about NO!

Don’t think we need to recruit a flyhalf, we have Grant, De Waal(sudden vomit taste in my mouth) and Lionel Cronje waiting in the wings, going for Butch would be a silly.

  • Butch you must stop complaining, I mean you decided to lengthen your contract for another 3 years a year ago when we actually wanted you back. So don’t complain, you need to commit to your original plan and that was with Bath and not the Sharks or the Springboks for that matter. I know you are very upset to play with Luke now, but in the end you have the pounds in your bank account. We need new fresh blood here at the Sharks, also we have decided to not use import flyhalfs by the way!!….

  • sorry, but I kind of agree with the Sharks position here. We all love Butch, but he’s the past, not the future. Problem is, when you don’t know what the future is (because your planning is up to shyte) then the past starts to look very attractive…

Doesn’t excuse either party here for behaving in a frankly embarrassing manner. I’m sure the truth of the story is somewhere in between what each side believes to be true…

  • Well Butch is a much better option than either Goode or Meyer!!

I think he still has 2-3 years left in him.

The Sharks were prepared to sign the likes of Tony Brown and he did make an impact while he was here.

Remember how well you did when Percy joined in 2007 I think it was??

Its all good wanting to sign youngsters but you also need a few experienced players like Butch.

31 years old is by no means too old for S14 rugby!!

Anyone who would accuse me of running a site that it slanted in favour of BJ van Zyl or any of the Sharks administration is delusional. That’s not to say that I believe in indiscriminately attacking them without any evidence.

I have a further problem in that your user name conflicts with one of my sponsors and I don’t want to cause confusion in the minds of my readers…

Sickening if true. What is it with the revolving door at 10 in the Sharktank?

And why do the sharks always go for the well-established (read over-the-hill) flyhalf?

And then only keep him for a season (if lucky) and the next year its the same story all over again.
No wonder there’s no gelling in the midfield – the bloody pivot changes twice or thrice a season.

Its time for the sharks to find a mid-twenties flyhalf and stick with him through hell or high water.

At second glance, I might be hoping for a bonus-less win to the Saders.

Seeing as I want the Streamers to end up top of the log after next weekend, yet still want to see my precious Sharks knock their socks off tomorrow, the Nulle will have to lose tonight. Thus giving the Streamers the opportunity to take top spot from them next weekend.

  • @robdylan (Comment 44) : My agenda is wanting the Sharks back at the summit of SA rugby. Simple.

My opinion is that for much of the time in the past decade (post-90′s) the blame for any underperforming Sharks team is often laid at the door of the coach.

Like groundhog day, we see a repeat of this process, i.e. whisper campaigns about the coach, often followed by a “reassurance” from the powers at be that the coach is “safe” in his job, only to see the proverbial “riding off into the sunset”.

What people seem to forget is that there is a common thread throughout this steady decline of the Sharks (yes, there are years of good results eg Currie Cup, but never a win of the S14).

I am not saying the admin are totally inept, instead I am of the opinion that they are nothing more than slightly above average and certainly no longer the benchmark SA S14 side. Now this is my opinion, but it is the opinion of many other passionate Sharks fans. It is an opinion supported by evidence an “average” player recruitment process, “average” coaching appointment process and “average” commnication process of what the Sharks need to do to get back to the pinnacle of SA rugby. Directors of Rugby, Coaches and players don’t select themselves – they are selected or appointed by someone higher up in the foodchain…

“Finger on any button” holds no fear and it depends on the “middle” you are wanting to meet. This is not about uncovering any “illuminati” but instead, plainly stating the obvious.

So, I have stated my “agenda” and I have voiced my “opinion” as a loyal Sharks fan. It seems it is contrary to the view on this site however does expressing a contrary view warrant censorship or debate. Surely middle ground is found in the latter?

Other than that apologies for a similar name to a sponsor. This was not my intention. I often blog on many rugby websites with the same moniker and have done so for a few seasons of Heavens Game, truly.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 75) : Everyone has an opinion, or perception. They just don’t have to be the same. A good first step sometimes is to state the extreme (Devils advocate style) and then work to middle through debate. Everyone learns.

Still doesn’t get away from the fact that there is something that doesn’t seem quite right at the Tank. Like a shiny Apple it may look okay on the outside, with a few bruises here or there, inside there seems to be a worm or two. Before long the rot has spread too much and the apple falls apart.

Sometimes leadership can only take an organisation so far. A step change upward may need new leadership. I, and many other Sharks fans, can’t accept the scapegoating of coaches or certain players all the time.

That is also not to say that Plum has been setting the field alight with his coaching.

I feel some sort of comprehensive review is needed for the Shark organisation from top to bottom. Outside consultants do this all the time for Commercial organisations whether by audit or strategic review. Maybe something similar for the Sharks?

  • @robdylan (Comment 91) : Yup, as the head honcho of coaching at the Sharks, it may be a step too far. Like many great assistants (eg Andy Robinson, England) the step up to being the main man may not be suited him at the moment or at all. He was and is a good forwards/breakdown coach. Of that, there can be no doubt. Surely the Sharks need a coach/manager of real stature commensurate of what should be their ambition. (maybe if Heineke Meyer gets bored with the office… lol or Nick Mallet gets gatvol of speaking Italian…) Pie in the sky, I know, but where is the ambition at the Sharks.

A few marquee players would do no harm either. Not for just for their “names” (but that certainly wouldn’t hurt merchandising) but for balance in the Shark squad and for guidance of the several promising youngsters in the squad.

So, agreement, of some sort wrt Plum, but he does have much to offer, though maybe not as head coach.

  • The contract for him to play for the Sharks again had been completed in March, but fell through at the last minute when the South African province withdrew from negotiations. The Sharks were not prepared to pay the substantial transfer fee that Bath had demanded for James.

Yes, Butch is a good player and loyal Sharks man but like some have said on Sharksworld, he is a bit battered and may not be a long term option suitable for a team that should have ambition. (On the other hand, we must remember in the past the Sharks did look after him when he was badly injured, so some kudos there). To me it is the way “business” is done. It does seem shambolic to say the least. The Goode decision was a bit “left-field” too…and I could go on, but I have made my point.

Had we had Butch in the Pipeline for next season or even the CC this year then the Sharksfans would have had something to look forward to as opposed to all the conjecture that we have to put up with now.

Along with calls to ruin even More players’ careers by playing them out of position because they are supposedly talented enough to play there.

First Brent Russell was ruined by being a utility back
Then Frans Steyn was ruined by being a utility back
Then Ruan Pienaar was almost ruined by being a utility back
and now they are about to ruin Pat Lambie.

On Frans Steyn, he had to play behind the “favoured” Brad Barrit. Barrit certainly showed his appreciation by being played ahead of the Springbok incumbent pretty darn well.

Now that Steyn is playing 12 for Racing Metro he is having an awesome season. I wouldn’t blame him if he showed the Sharks a big Fat middle finger if they approached him to come back for next season

Did Bath approach Butch mid contract? If so then the Sharks are even more stupid for not asking a transfer fee.

  • @ KSA Shark (comment 104) I agree with your comments about utility players. Every player that has been advocated as a utility player has regressed. If the sharks want to spend big money on a player, bring back some SA talent, not a foreign mercenary. There are enough SA players of high quality to go after. Want to solve our backline woes, bring back Barritt, Steyn, hell make a meaningful offer to JdV. Butch would have been short term anyway so lets start looking for some younger FH talent, someone who can pull on a green and gold jersey in the future, not someone who is going to run back home after 6 months. If we can sort out 10 – 13 we will be back in business. Ruan clearly thrives at SH not FH. Swannie is a decent backup, not a good enough starter at super 14 level, and Stefan hasnt realised that you need to keep the ball in hand if you’re a 13. We have the forwards to front up, but at the back…

  • How can the Sharks be blamed for this? If you don’t have the money, then you don’t have the money.

Buying out 2 years of a NH club contract, would be about £300k-£500K. Then Butch wanted a big salary most local players do not get, probably in the region of R1.2m+ a season.

    No union has this money.

If Butch really wanted to return, he should have contacted the union before resigning. The onus should be on him, not for Stroodle or anyone else to keep hassling him. Can’t he make decisions without understand the consequences?

Money motivated him moving to Bath, money motivated him to sign up for all those season. Then suddenly when he realises there could be a RWC spot available, starting/bench/squad, money suddenly does not matter and he’s crying crocodile tears over being ‘embarrassed’. He just thinks the contract he’s signed is almost meaningless and the Sharks can bail him for £500K+. Nah, it’s his own fault and he made his own bed and must now lie in it.

From what I can see the Sharks pursued it as far as they could, but were unable to sign him.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 106) : Frans has been selected at 10 for the next game. He wasn’t playing behind anyone before he left. He played half a Currie Cup in 2006 at 10 and that was his first season, people forget this. I do not think the Sharks ‘ruined’ Frans Steyn, I think they did everything they could for him and provided chances for him, early in his career, that NO other union was willing to do. I don’t believe any other union would have risked him in the 2006 Currie Cup at the age he was, he only played for us through injuries after the half-way point. Without that Currie Cup he would not have made the EOYT in 2006 and may not have made the 2007 RWC either, as he was not always a starter in 2007 Super 14. Far from ruining him, I think the Sharks made him. Who knows where he would be now without the Sharks.

He is signed with Racing until the end of 2012 and is the 5th highest paid player in France on roughly €350K a year (from memory).

How anyone thinks we can possibly buy out Butch’s contract, or Frans’. Then also pay them a big salary in SA terms of R1.2K+ a season. I have no idea.

This isn’t the Sharks fault. These players left for money, fair go I probably would also. But you can’t then moan and complain the place you left simply does not have the cash to re-employ you.

They may one day come back, but not without SARU money and not when we have to pay out massive sums to buy out contracts. Not going to happen.

Not the Sharks fault. Just economics.

  • congrats to all sharks fans….that was a magnificent display of forward play….and Kockitt made our lives a misery. What a pity we couldnt have 3 teams in top 4!

Brilliant ….could have been 30 nil to sharks….in 1 st half!!!!!

Well done…its been a tough super 14 but the last 7 weeks show the recipe for a very succesful cc and super 15 next year….Lambie amd Mvovo are the future….embrace the youth….and find a 13….

    congrats again…we were badly exposed.

  • @war1 (Comment 142) : That’s why most of us Sharks supporters support the Streamers as our second team.

  • @war1 (Comment 144) : Hehehehehe, I forgot about your article.

Let me put it this way, it’d be far easier to accept the Streamers winning the S14 than the Nulle, I’ll even be able to celebrate the cup being won by SA…..but like last year, if the Nulle had to win it would be the same as the saders or the tahs winning it. No celebration.

  • I’m a little late on this thread, but just wanted to add that you okes giving Butch the finger for chasing bucks need a memory check. The guy wasn’t been offered the security of a two yr contract he needed and deserved. This was why he chose to go to Bath, and of course Sharks didn’t ask for a transfer fee as in their minds he was done!
    This assertion is clearly supported by someone who clearly has inside info;

Butch was willing to get a lower salary, and Bath lowered the transfer fee. So that leaves the Sharks with their pants down… again. The Sharks are seriously a bunch of dunderheads behind the scenes! The same fools who mistreated Campese (He who got the Sharks to the S14 final in ‘07!!!) and let him go. Here’s the real story…

1.Butch signed with Bath before the WC 2007 after trying to negotiate a new 2 year deal with the Sharks. The Sharks deal was not about money, but they only wanted a 1 year deal. A day after signing with Bath, the Sharks, knowing this made a 2 year deal offer – in my opinion to spite him.

2.Butch’s deal with Bath was not substatially higher than his contract at the Sharks. Had Butch signed with a club after the WC 2007, he could certainly have tried for more.

3.During the WC he received numerous offers of huge amounts for clubs in France – money wasn’t an option, he wanted to play rugby in a place where the culture was similar to the Sharks at the time.

4.Last Christmas, whilst in Durban, Butch attended a Sharks training session to see his mates. After the training he was asked to meet with John Plumtree who asked if he would be interested in returning.

5.Having just re-signed for Bath (he had no intention to return to play at home), he was concerned it would look bad on him moving back to the Sharks. Butch openely discussed the Sharks approach to him with his management at Bath, who were open to negotiating and said they wouldn’t ever stand in a players way.

6.Butch has always appreciated the privelage to play for the Springboks. An opportunity to return to SA and attempt to regain his place in the Springbok set up would be a great opportunity! He has never thought it a right to be a Springbok.

7.Following extensive negotiations, Bath reduced their transfer fee substantialy, and Butch also agreed to reduce his salary requirement.

8.Bath gave a date to the Sharks to put in their formal request and offer. This date came and went, after that Bath approached the Sharks and asked what was going on. They said they needed more time, which was granted. This date has come and gone, and still no formal decline/acceptance of the offer has been made, turned down.

9.Butch himself needed to phone the Sharks to find out what was going on – and even then he was given various conflicting answers.
