Francois Steyn slotted one of the biggest dropgoals I’ve ever seen over the weekend in the French T14 play-offs.
It was a magnificent effort from the young man playing flyhalf and was hit from about the 60m mark, easily sailing over the cross-bar and ending in the crowd.
Come home Francois, those sort of efforts belong in South Africa!
Video attached below.

How was the rest of his play?
We were talking about Ruan at FH yesterday.
After a few years playing in France Fran may just be the man to fill the FH position at the sharks when he eventually returns.
Magnificent effort.
@provincejoulekkading (Comment 1) :
To be fair I didnt watch the game but from reports read he’s been playing pretty decent rugger of late. French leagues are tough and can only make him a better player.
Come home FS
Sharks need you my friend
And that was a great kick
Huge
I watched the youtube clip and could not help seeing all the related videos…
I have not been Frans’ number one fan for many reasons, but to be fair reasons mainly not attributed to him or his actions directly, rather decisions made around him by other people.
There are certain things in rugby you cannot coach, and there are very few players in the world who has these things you cannot coach.
Given Fransie’s edges get smoothed over with some good coaching and mentorship, you can bet your ass any team needs a player like him.
It was interesting to note the commentators asking during the clip what they did during the week, and the one guy mention in practice he misses them from everywhere, but with the big games, comes Frans Steyn as only he can.
That is something you cannot coach.
@Morné (Comment 6) :
Absolutely agree Morne.
The best part is he is only 22! We shouldnt be expecting that much from him and his going to be a legend by the time he finishes up his career.
@Morné (Comment 6) : What the bit about regularly missing them from all over the shop.
… rate Steyn’s drop against the Crusaders on Saturday as well
@Hertford Highlander (Comment 8) :
Dude, is that Hertford as in Hertford in Hertfordshire?
@VinChainSaw (Comment 7) :
Best thing he could have done was go to France.
@VinChainSaw (Comment 9) : Sure is…your not going to get all aggressive now are you
@Morné (Comment 10) :
Absolutely. He needed to get out from under the microscope.
We forget how young he is.
@Hertford Highlander (Comment 11) :
No dude, I’m pretty laid back.
I live in St Albans, just down the road from you.
That was huge and he could have been another 10 metres back and it still would have gone over.
@VinChainSaw (Comment 13) : yeah, how sweet… you guys are practically neighbours
@VinChainSaw (Comment 13) : Nice…i like a little trip to Wagamama’s for a family meal now and again.
….handy train line into London.
@robdylan (Comment 15) : You just wish you were back in the Shire at Hemel…
@robdylan (Comment 15) : When do i get my barbecue
@Hertford Highlander (Comment 16) :
I live pretty much mid-way between wagas and the station actually.
If you take the train you’re almost walked past my place!
We moved up here because of the train line and its fantastic when it works… although at £320 for a monthly ticket it doesnt come cheap! And if there just a breeze in the air the trains dont bloody run… last year was a mare – train driver strikes, the snow etc caused chaos.
But I love living here – Herts is beautiful.
Anyway boys I need to shower and shave – got an interview this afternoon.
@robdylan (Comment 15) :
This calls for a Sharksworld get together!!!
@Hertford Highlander (Comment 18) :
Speaking of which, how is the winner decided if more than one makes it through all the rounds?
If the Lions win this weekend, I am still in!!!
@VinChainSaw (Comment 19) : It’s the best of both worlds…isn’t it.
Great to have London on your door step.
@wpw (Comment 21) : @Morné (Comment 22) :
Your place or mine Wes !
@Morné (Comment 22) :
It will be based on how long you’ve been a member of the site.
In that case I reckon the two of us will be fighting it out for the WEBER…
As if the Lions are going to beat the Cheetahs this wkend!!
@Morné (Comment 22) : well, whatever happens, we’re going to head into tiebreak. All the remaining contestants have the Lions this weekend
@wpw (Comment 25) : @robdylan (Comment 26) :
Bwahahahaha
@robdylan (Comment 26) : Like they had a choice
@robdylan (Comment 26) : Darn & blasted Lions
@robdylan (Comment 26) :
What no CUP…again !
@robdylan (Comment 26) : I’m still miffed with the force who screwed me out of LMS.Damn awful bastards.
@provincejoulekkading (Comment 31) :
Sharks screwed me out of my lifeline early in the season losing against the Cheetahs…
Pffft…
@Morné (Comment 32) : Dude the Force won BEEG then I picked them and the lost, then they won Beeg the next weekend, bleak ekse!
Just watched this clip now. Tried too yesterday on rt but could not download it.
Damn that was a monster drop from Frans. He should still be playing his rugby here. Far, far too young to have left. Should have stayed until after the wc. Pains me to see such a talented South African youngster (world class actually) playing for a club overseas and not a Franchise in SA. Only 22 years of age and gone. Sharks how did we let him go? That was a huge loss. If he ever comes back to SA, don’t think he will ever come back to the Sharks. Too many supporters here always booing him. Must have had enough of us. Disgrace to the ones that ever done the booing.
Anyhow that was a brilliant drop goal. Also always remember that 60m penalty he took last year for the Boks against the ABs. McCaw saying after the game you just can never defend against something like that. Those monster kicks are a sure weapon against any team.
@Hertford Highlander (Comment 30) :
FOUR MORE YEARS bro!!!
Just measured it on GE.
the kick was 54m out and it traveled around 69m
@wpw (Comment 35) :
@robdylan (Comment 26) :
Nope
There is a Cheetah pick in there,
there is a Force pick in there.
There is a Sharks pick in there.
And although we still have some greens in there, if they lose and a Yellow wins then they will be tied and that will have to go to tie breaker regardless of how long ago you lost your lifeline.
If the Sharks start saving now, they might be able to afford him in about 4yrs time – barring any other fh imports of course.
Btw….what’s his ratio on drop goals these days? for every 15 missed he slots one beeeeeg one?
I watched the second half . The drop goal was excellent but apart from that he made two crucial mistakes including earning a penalty for Clermont for high tacle which enabled them to escape with points ahead. And he was furious that he was penalised , although it was absolutely correct decision. He hasn’t dropped his dreams of playing fly half (I saw him before the start of the game he was overjoyed!) But ended the game rather as fulback and I doubt he would be a solution for flyhalf problems for Sharks.
@tedanica (Comment 40) : Him and Ruan need to swap attitudes…..Ruan needs to want to play fh as bad as Frans wants it, and Frans must reallise that he’s an excellent FB or inside centre and stick with it.
@FireTheLooser (Comment 41) :
hmmm – that may be the answer
hello everyone!
@FireTheLooser (Comment 41) :
Exactly and Fransie may get some of his selfbelief and arrogance to Ruan. It would be good for both of them
Sorry I meant give
why are we getting excited about Fransie’ 60m dropgoal – he’s done that before and we all know he can do that!
@tedanica (Comment 44) : ya, it’s better he does not get any of this from Ruan
@KSA Shark © (Comment 38) :
What does the tie breaker involve???
@wpw (Comment 47) : further fight
@wpw (Comment 47) : Most comments on Sharksworld…so you should be in with a shot. Or perhaps the semi’s and finals prediction?
@Pokkel (Comment 49) :
hehehe
I hope so!!!
@Pokkel (Comment 49) : the last one could be the best option – pity that none of the leftover teams is in semis – unless…. somebody has ace in hand
@Pokkel (Comment 49) :
Nah, I think the Destiny has been written in the stars!!
Mr Weber will end up with The Weber!!
@wpw (Comment 52) : Wanner kan ek kom braai??
@Pokkel (Comment 53) :
Enige tyd ou maat.
@Pokkel (Comment 49) : it will be most Sharksworld points accumulated from the time the Super 14 started till just after the final.
@Pokkel (Comment 49) :
Close
@wpw (Comment 47) :
Most comments on Sharksworld since the start of the Super 14 competition.
@robdylan (Comment 55) :
Excluding articles posted right? or else admin staff will have an unfair advantage?
@rekinek (Comment 45) :
Spot on, one of the ralted videos actually shows hid do a drop goal the same distance from the opposition tryline but from the 15m line as aopposed to the middle like this one.
The one from the 15m line was in Durban which has a longer field than Clermont. Kingpark in 99,5m tryline to tryline while Stade Marcel-Michelin is only 95m
we’ll do this… we’ll only include original articles. You and Clayton already dead and I’m not eligible anyway.
@wpw (Comment 54) :
I think you may be excluded from the prize. Rule 10 is very pertinent.
9. Should the pool stages of the competition be completed and more than one player is still standing then a tie break will be used to decide the winner. Any player having used a lifeline will be eliminated. If there is still more than one player left standing then participation in Sharksworld discussions over the course of the 2010 Super 14 will be the final tiebreaker.
10. JustRugby.net will exclude anyone from a chance of winning the prize if it is felt that the player has not conducted him/herself within the spirit of the game. Eg. Posting comments containing nonsense to increase Sharksworld participation.
@robdylan (Comment 59) : not everybody has posting rigths though?
HH and WPW could suddenly post an original piece each day each win the comp . (Local and Int)
@KSA Shark © (Comment 60) :
regarding last sentence of Rule 10 – I’m afraid it would exclude all of us
@rekinek (Comment 62) :
@KSA Shark © (Comment 58) : that’s lot of numbers
aren’t rugby fields suppose to be standard size? the international obnes at least ?
@Morné (Comment 10) : thats so true
@rekinek (Comment 64) :
There is a minimum and maximum size for a pitch but not an exact size.
1.2 REQUIRED DIMENSIONS FOR THE PLAYING ENCLOSURE
(a) Dimensions. The field of play does not exceed 100 metres in length and 70 metres in width. Each in-goal does not exceed 22 metres in length and 70 metres in width.
(b) The length and breadth of the playing area are to be as near as possible to the dimensions indicated. All the areas are rectangular.
(c) The distance from the goal line to the dead ball line should be not less than 10 metres where practicable.
@Chaz (Comment 65) : are you trying to out-do Morne in avatar’s choice
@wpw (Comment 25) : don’t go ahead of yourself wonders seem to open very quickly
@rekinek (Comment 67) :
@Hertford Highlander (Comment 30) : eee
@KSA Shark © (Comment 66) : the reason I ‘m asking – field C at Loftus where was Vodacom Cup semi seems very small the distance between tryline and 5m line looked like 1/2 or 2/3 max of what the real thing is. It must be difficult for kickers if you are not familiar with the field’s size – methinks.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 56) :
Alrighty then!!
let me get cracking then!!!
@KSA Shark © (Comment 60) :
oh dear!!!
@KSA Shark © (Comment 61) :
Dude, you know I am an upright and honest person!!
(Ah, another comment!!)
Cheers everyone!!
I’m off like a Jewish foreskin!!
@wpw (Comment 74) : not rugby related
cheerioo
@wpw (Comment 75) :
ALSO not Rugby related.
@rekinek (Comment 71) :
Solid Lines
The dead ball lines and touch-in-goal lines, both of which are outside the in-goal areas;
The goal lines, which are within the in-goal areas but outside the field of play;
The 22-metre lines; which are parallel to the goal lines
The half way line which is parallel to the goal lines; and
The touchlines which are outside the field of play.
(b) Broken Lines
The 10-metre lines, which run from one touchline to the other, are 10 metres from each side of the half way line and parallel to it; and
The 5-metre lines, which run from one 5-metre dash line to the other, are 5 metres from and parallel to the touchlines.
The 15-metre lines, which link the 5-metre dash lines, are 15 metres from and parallel to the touchline
@KSA Shark © (Comment 78) : thanx.
Aha. so if they are broken lines – can the distance change ?
I need a bit more complicated little book on rugby.
@wpw (Comment 74) : @wpw (Comment 75) : well then i’ll never win anything might win but never get anything most of my comments arn’t good enough
eeee but its for fun and that what i enjoy
but you really make me laugh at comment 75
eeeaaaahhhh
@rekinek (Comment 79) :
No. I posted that to show that they are SUPPOSED to be 5 and 15m from the touchline. Some clubs “steal” a bit on this so that the two 15m lines aren’t to close to each other making the field look pretty crappy.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 77) : eeee at least i’m not the only one
@KSA Shark © (Comment 78) : where cani get some Rugby rules etc and mw want to build up my thing so when i do win something me just might get me prise and not just a cup eeeee
