Pretorius linked to Sharks

The words “you have got to be kidding me” were the first to form in my mind when a rumour surfaced last week about Andre Pretorius joining the Sharks for this season’s Currie Cup. I’m afraid that this one has now passed my “two unrelated sources” test and thus must have some grain of truth to it.

The former Lions pivot has had massive injury problems over the course of his career and has not completed a season of rugby at any stage over the last five years. His most recent foray into Super Rugby saw him signed by the Western Force as a marquis player. That exercise lasted less than a month, as he duly pulled a hammie during pre-season training, that ruled him out of the entire competition.

Not that a little thing like that would stop our intrepid friend Rudi Straeuli, though. It seems that, having tried in vain to sign every other over-the-hill crock of a flyhalf, he’s now stumbled onto Pretorius. The mind boggles.

Rudi, I beg you – for the sake of Sharks rugby and the sanity of every last one of us – don’t do this. Just walk away and let Pretorius retire gracefully in Japan with his dignity intact. Don’t subject the Sharks fans to more of this nonsense. We’ve had more than enough of it.

  • don’t panic guys, he can be flyhalf coach as he will play ten minutes and miss 6 games so will be spending most his time on the side lines.

  • Is Straueli secretly the beneficiery of some injury rehab centres?? Coz that is where he seems to be spending all the Sharks money. Why in the hell does he keep on paying blokes to have a holiday on the Sharks account?? Ag, no man – now you have defnitely lost the last braincell that you might have had left!
Pertoors???? Come ON!! Koebaai winning rugby, koebaai stadium, koebaai Sharks…that’s the only outcome I see here. In case you have not noticed, I am FUMING here. NRU is a disgrace!

Meanwhile, former Springboks five-eighth Andre Pretorius is a chance to play on with the Force next season despite a serious hamstring injury ruling him out of the entire 2010 Super campaign.

The Force are desperate to secure Reds playmaker Quade Cooper, but are exploring other options in the likely event Cooper remains with the Reds.

Pretorius is aiming to play in this year’s Currie Cup competition for the Sharks and Mitchell said the 31-year-old would be looked at if he made it through the season.

So if he has a good season he buggers off back to Aus?????????? leaving us high and dry for the S14.

Still, he looked pretty good when the Force stuffed us 28-0 in pre-season.

  • WITH Englishman Andy Goode set to leave the Sharks for Guinness Premiership-relegated Worcester Warriors, the “who should play flyhalf ?” debate is sure to rage on in the build-up to the Currie Cup.

In the aftermath of their failed Super 14 campaign, this is perhaps the most important question that will need to be answered in the coming weeks.

There is no doubt that the Sharks’ season was severely disrupted by the injury to Juan Hernandez, the retirement of Steve Meyer and the late signing of Goode.

Goode did his best to settle down in the flyhalf berth, but his game was never going to be ideally suited to that of the fastpaced Super 14, nor was it capable of getting the best out of the limited Sharks backline.

What should be recognised, though, is that despite the Sharks’ propensity to sign foreign flyhalves, the intention after the departure of Hernandez was to invest in a local for a good couple of years.

This was the hope with Meyer before his sudden about-turn and Goode’s recruitment was more out of necessity to ensure Pienaar could get back to his best in his preferred position at scrumhalf.

From that perspective it has been a success as Pienaar has been one of the standout performers this season and his renewed confidence has seen him perform with aplomb when shifting to the flyhalf berth.

The 26-year-old got a fair amount of game-time at scrumhalf and flyhalf, and by finding his form of old he has placed pressure on both Springbok incumbents Fourie du Preez and Morne Steyn.

But Pienaar’s absence for much of the Currie Cup, coupled with Goode’s departure, has left the Sharks with a No 10 jersey up for grabs.
Sharks CEO Brian van Zyl has said they would prefer to back their home-grown youngsters and hopefully this means no more overseas signings are on the cards.

The young man who could fill this void is the success story of the season, Patrick Lambie, who has enjoyed a superb start to his Sharks’ career, albeit at fullback.

As he is just 19 years old, it could be argued that he should be allowed to settle at professional level in one position, with his incredibly safe hands under the high ball and courageous defence certainly fitting of a fullback.

However, there is no doubt he also has the credentials to be a superb flyhalf – a solid kicking game, an eye for the gap, a good understanding of time and space, great hands and a solid pass.

“Certainly he has attributes that indicate he could do the job,” Sharks coach John Plumtree agreed. “However, it’s just about nurturing him into professional rugby at this level. Maybe we’ll see him get an opportunity there in the Currie Cup.”

The one big question mark hangs over the youngster’s decision-making ability in this crucial position, because if he has been guilty of one thing this season it is the occasional poor option taking, which has primarily seen him take the ball into contact when it isn’t always on.

The Michaelhouse old boy played both flyhalf and fullback at school, while schoolmate Guy Cronje established himself at pivot during his senior years.

Cronje, who will turn 21 in July, is also a home-grown contender for the flyhalf berth, having debuted there during last year’s Currie Cup, but he has battled with a long-term injury this year. Stalwart Monty Dumond, who has featured at flyhalf for the Sharks XV this season, is another option.

Meanwhile, fullback Louis Ludik is back in action after an injury-plagued season, featuring in a club rugby game at the weekend, and this will add to the debate about where he should be accommodated.

Some interesting decisions will need to be made in the leadup to the Sharks’ July 10 Currie Cup opener, but the benefits of backing talented local youngsters could reap rewards worth their weight in gold.

  • I’m all against bringing in ANY flyhalf from outside.

I think we have a perfectly fine one in Monty who, had our Boks and JFH not come back into the CC team last year to screw up the in-form, settled combination of McLeod/Durand (and our campaign), would still have been our flyhalf.

Anyway, let’s say we do buy someone, why the hell is it always someone on crutches or, at the very least, sporting an injury list longer than his CV?

I’m really getting sick of this crap.

  • @rhineshark (Comment 82) : Yip, I would just play McLeod and Dumond and then when our boks comes back, McLeod and Ruan…hoping that Kockett got sick of sitting on the bench and left! Sorry, but he just sucks. He has talent amd flair, but he doesn’t want to do the job of a scrummy. If he doesn’t make at least 5 breaks in a match the Sharks will be struggling to win, because every 3rd ruck Kockett will go for a run and lose possession.

  • @Letgo (Comment 80) : @Greg (Comment 88) : To be fair to Pretorius he can be a great flyhalf. His biggest problem IMO is that he played great rugby in SA but the moment he played overseas in either the S14 or for the Boks he started to fall apart.

The lads got talent, and with JL Potgieter and Morne Steyn there i dont think he`s going to feature much in the super 14. he should bench and start once in a while in the cc, but i mentioned it last year that brummer should be given a chance at the sharks.

Oh and don’t forget the drops he loved to take with a 6 to 2 man overlap outside him.
He sucked and will suck for the Sharks. Maybe he did some good individual stuff, but no team looked better with him at pivot.

  • @rhineshark (Comment 92) : And I can’t agree with you, firstly cleaning the ball quicker is a huge issue, especially since it seems like he is incapable of changing that part of his game…you would think its simple, but Plum, when Kockett was dropped this year, actually mentioned that it was partly because of his cleaning out. Yet when he came back even against the stormers when he had one of his better games, he still failed to clean the ball in decent time. It’s very important…every second puts another defender in place and closes another gap and takes another attacking option away. Without quick ball, you can forget about line breaks and tries. Your only option becomes kicking high boms and into the corners.

Secondly…it’s not just the speed he gets to the rucks and cleans the balls out, it’s the quality of his service to his team. Because he gets to the rucks way to late, the ball squirts out half of the times and then as if that’s not bad enough, because he’s looking around trying to figure out into which one of the forwards exactly he’ll run next, it always roles past his feet…he has to turn around and then pass.

Which brings me to thirdly…his passing, horrible. At a players toes. Over a players head. On a players left shoulder when the player is moving right and hoping to make a pass to the right. Into a players chest when the player is hoping to catch the ball in space, moving forward.

Fourthly…(I think thats enough, but keep reading, there’s more) His decision making. Not only is it slow, but many times you wish that he rather never tries to make his own decisions and just feeds the ball to his 10. The reason he takes this long is probably a result of his inability to read the game. That’s why he loses the ball so many times. He knows if he runs the ball about 10 times in a game there will be a gap at least once. When he gets the gap everyone gets really excited about how great he is, failing to remember all the other times he cost his team possession trying to do the exact same thing.

Oh and have you ever noticed how, when Kockett is playing our highly rated forwards starts looking more average at keeping the ball save and clean at ruck time, but when Ruan is playing they have been great at this…much easier to keep the ball at ruck time when your scrummy is there and alert to take the ball out whenever needed.

Five is an extension of four. When you tap and run and make 10m, it only means you can run 10m, not that you made a break or put your team in a better position. Especially when you tap and run 10m without even considering the possibility that other players might be in a better position to make a break or take the team forward or that other players might be running supportive lines and are waiting for a pass or an offload. And if doing this over and over in one game without success, that one time you make more than 10m, that only means not even the other team thought you would be that predictable.

Believe me, the Sharks will be better of with Kockett far, far away. I was always one of the people that wanted to give him a chance, because I thought he showed potential and had great rugby qualities, but his inability to improve on his shortcomings is getting a little tiresome. And seeing a guy like McLeod in the VC team and on the bench all year long has become unacceptable.
