Mapoe kom Durban toe

And not just for a Holiday.

According to a report on OFM Sport Lionel Mapoe has been scooped up by the Sharks. Earlier in the season reports were doing the rounds that the Cheetahs’ flier was being courted by the Bulls after it became public knowledge that his contract with the Cheetahs was almost non-existant.

According to OFM Mapoe has already reported for duty in Durban. This is good news as it means he will be available for the Sharks in the Currie Cup already.

Mapoe missed most of the Super 14 season after he dislocated his shoulder and tore the cartilage in Round 6 of the tournament. At the time his injury was set to sideline him for four months, meaning he would only be back in action in late July.

Jan-Harm van Wyk, Mapoe’s agent was not prepared to comment. Cheetahs big-wig Harold Verster was however available for comment ,but all he had to say was that Mapoe had a binding contract with the Cheethas.

The 21-year old Mapoe himself could not be reached for comment.

  • from earlier in the season it seems that he is (was) only earning around R29 500 per month in the Super 14, which is the minimum salary for a South African player in the Super 14. His contract with Free State is worth about R200 000 a year.

also some very sad news that came through for those that care

The South African sports world was on Wednesday mourning the loss of one of the country’s most highly regarded sports writers, Rodney Hartman, who lost his battle with cancer on Tuesday night.

    – Join the ICC World T20 Fantasy League now and stand to win great prizes.

Hartman had been fighting leukaemia for 15 years. Recently he contracted skin cancer, when a malignant melanoma was discovered.
He leaves his wife, Carien, three sons and a daughter.

Hartman, who was sports convenor of the Independent Group at the time of his death, was a former sports editor of the Sunday Times and of the Sunday Independent. He was also communications manager for the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup in South Africa, working closely with the former chief executive of the United Cricket Board, Dr Ali Bacher.

“Rodney was a man of integrity and honesty, and was highly regarded by international and South African sports writers, as well as sportsmen,” said Bacher.

“Rodney was never vindictive, and any criticism was always constructive — so much so that the subject of his criticism usually took heed. I never saw him lose his cool or lose his temper.”

Bacher saw Hartman just hours before his death. “He looked at me and said ‘we ran well together between the wickets, didn’t we, Ali?’

“He also told me he was sorry to have been a burden to his family, and that he had had enough. Just before I left, he took my hand and asked me to pass on his good wishes to my family. That is the measure of the man,” said Bacher.

The editor of the Mutual and Federal South African Cricket Annual, Colin Bryden, described Hartman as one of the finest sports journalists South Africa had produced.

“He was a valued friend for several decades, and I am feeling pretty shattered by the news,” said Bryden.

“One of the oustanding things about Rodney was his superb knowledge of all sports, not just cricket. He was also an excellent sports editor.”

Gerald Majola, CEO of Cricket South Africa, said also paid tribute to Hartman.

“Rodney was a man for all seasons, and South African cricket was particularly fortunate that he devoted so much of his time, energy and skills to our sport.

“He graced the South African sports scene for four decades as a writer and sports editor and he will be sorely missed.”

“He was a great mentor, who became a very good friend,” commented Supersport communications manager Clinton van der Berg.

“In the highly competitive world of sports writing, I don’t think you would find a single person with a bad word to say about Rodney, and that is quite something.”

Van der Berg said Hartman had the ability to write with understanding about any sport, although cricket and boxing were his great passions.

“He loved good boxing writers, and some of the best sports writing has been about boxing.”

Moegsien Williams, editor of the Star and group editorial director, said on the IOL website Hartman had been a true professional and friend. “Rod set the example for all of us, from the youngest to the oldest, in both the way he conducted himself as a journalist and in the way he quietly and courageously fought his battle with cancer.

“His daily column was essential reading for anyone interested in sport and a masterclass for young aspiring columnists. We are poorer at his passing, but richer for having had the privilege of knowing him,” said Williams.

Hartman was the author of three biographies, about Ali Bacher, Hansie Cronje and boxer Brian Mitchell.

The funeral service will be held at Trinity Church, on the corner of 5th Avenue and Milner Road in Linden at 2pm on Friday.

  • Im not sure about this buy. Mapoe is a good player, but realistically, wing is probably the one position in the Sharks backline that doesnt require work. With JP, Mvovo, Sbu Sithole, Vulindlu and Odwa, the Sharks have enough talent out wide. The problem is getting the ball to them.

  • However, Cheetahs president Harold Verster argues that Mapoe is committed to the Bloemfontein-based union until October 2011 according to his current contract.

‘I’ve been in touch with Sharks CEO Brian van Zyl and he told me that the Sharks were approached by an agent to sign Lionel,’ Verster told this website.

‘I told him they can’t sign him because he is committed to us and he told me the Sharks will still look into this issue. I have tried to get hold of him again, but he’s not answering my calls. The Sharks will probably try to find holes in Lionel’s contract, this is what they usually do.’

  • Verster added that they will take action if Mapoe does not return to the Cheetahs.

‘Our legal representatives have checked Lionel’s Cheetahs contract and we are sure it is legit. So if he does go on and play for the Sharks, we will take legal action. He is still a Cheetahs player and belongs in Bloemfontein.

‘This situation comes as a shock to all of us. I saw Lionel at our last game against the Lions in Welkom and he seemed happy. The guys are on leave now, that’s why it’s difficult to know about their whereabouts.’

  • This is not the first time Mapoe has had contractual issues with the Cheetahs. In March, Mapoe’s agent representatives tried to find loop holes in his contract to sign a new lucrative deal with the Bulls.

This arose after it was revealed that Mapoe was still signed under a junior contract three weeks into the Super 14, meaning the speedster only earned R200 000 a year whereas he could’ve earned R1.4 million with a new contract with the Bulls.

The deal fell through after the Cheetahs and Bulls agreed that Mapoe should commit to his current contract. Improved contract negotiations were supposed to be held between the Cheetahs and Mapoe, but it is understood that this never happened.

not one of these rumours are confirmed. maybe the sias ebersohn getting a offer from us, but guys, the fs didnt even use the guy in the super 14, now what they going on about? mapoe is a bright talent, one deserving of a better contract. what do the fs do, keep him on the lowest paid contract in the super 14. and dont tell me after winning 3 currie cups that there is no money.

guys, we are complaining about the sharks management, go take a look at the fs and lions then think again.

How many games has Basson played this season??

I am sure he has only played a handful (i.e. not more than 4-5)

And suddenly he is Bok material??

Dude, please!! Habana and JP proved their worth time and again and if they are fit they should be our starting wingers for the tests against France and TN’s.

That’s when you bring in a young player for him to take under his wing…JP will find form again and we know what he can do when he does.

  • Form in a team that lost 5 in a row then won 5 in a row is no great oindicator in my mind.

The argument will soon be settled anyway, but I fully expect another boring performance from the AB wings. Expect their midfield will offer more, along with the loosies. Don’t rate your wings much.

I think our two best wings are Mesaga and Sivivatu

….but they are both out injured for i think the entire season.

….So who is left…. Rokocoko and Wulf i guess.

….I think Wulf has had a great Super 14.

JP doubtfull because of injury but he’ll be there. Though they may send hom to CC to get some match fitness before joining Boks – poor sharkies.

I think Odwa may sneack in as well – though not such certainty as JP.

Just because a player is the best in that position at that moment, does not mean they are the best choice of selection for any particular team.

  • @Hertford Highlander (Comment 97) : No because, you can’t be guaranteed that a stand out player in the S14 won’t disappointed in Test rugby, it’s happened before, yet we know what JP can do at Test level. I’m not saying you won’t have a decent back-up for JP and Habana, but they should and will only be selected if Jp or Habana shows the same kind of form in the Bok jersey as they did in their provincial colors.

  • @Hertford Highlander (Comment 108) : He’s never played 50 caps in consecutive seasons for any of his teams. He was a good player for one season and should not have been selected for the boks right away…you actually just helped me make my point for me. When a player shows some potential or even when they are outstanding performers in that season it doesn’t necessarily mean they will be test veterans in years to come…and which ever way you look at it, I much prefer the guy who will accumulate 100caps over a good career than a guy that will be forgotten in a year or two.

  • @Hertford Highlander (Comment 174) : Yes dude, but considering that he played in a struggling Sharks team with maybe the worst back-line in the comp, his form based on this season shouldn’t be what you go with.

Also the one try I remember him scoring against the Highlanders would not have been a try if JP didn’t come up in support from deep to take that last pass…I know it’s one try, but that’s also the only try of the Sharks this season I can remember.

I bet he’ll do better with his bok teammates around him, so I guess we’ll have to wait and see who’s right until JP gets a run for the Boks.

  • Just got this Sharks Media release.

Sharks CEO, Brian van Zyl, has confirmed that The Sharks have signed up Cheetah’s winger Lionel Mapoe. Following a contractual dispute Lionel terminated his contract with the Free State Cheetahs on the 9th March 2010 and has requested a clearance certificate from them. He has in the meantime concluded a 2 ½ year contract with The Sharks and will start training with the squad next week

i guess a bit tricky when this is a fixed time contract with no notice period.

i don’t know much about sportsman contract but I would imagine that the labour laws would apply in some degree – and an employee can always resign.
