Waylon Murray would appear to have signed with the Lions.
While we aren’t able to officially confirm this, I have it on reasonably good authority that Murray is already in Joburg and will presumably start training with the Lions Currie Cup squad who, if further rumours are to be believed, will be coached by John Mitchell.
An interview earlier this year revealed that the big centre was prepared to give the Sharks one last go in the Super 14, but since he again played only a bit part in this year’s campaign, it is probably not all that surprising that he’s opted to throw in his lot with his former mentor Dick Muir, who we understand has been chasing him ever since accepting the Lions post earlier this year.
The Bulls were understood to also be in the hunt for Murray’s signature.
Good luck, Waylon. We’ll miss you, but hopefully this could be the start of big things for you down in Lions country.

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
A good player (Well, was, on current form), but I think we need to be clearing some dead wood to be honest
there goes another one of Dick’s babes…
How do you go from being a Bok at 20 to being deadwood at 13???
Surely there is nothing the matter with him that some technical or mental coaching couldn’t sort out?
I am a big fan, and although he has been injured and out of form for 2 seasons, I think this is a major loss, and an oindictment of the coaching staff and development policy.
@Big Fish (Comment 4) : oincdictment? Sounds like something you accuse a pig of…
Good luck Waylion
How many rumours and facts about signings are still going to come out this week.
I really hope the Andre Pretorius rumour is a late April’s fools joke
@robdylan (Comment 5) : lol
If he was in top form he would be a major loss but he has been out of form for 2 seasons
@JarsonX (Comment 7) : If not the Sharks are REALLY scraping the barrel…
Damn Blackberry…
Bummed :/
This is probably the best move for Waylon, wish him all the best and hope he gets his form of old back
Not surprising, but still sad. Goodluck, and I hope you’ll shine in Jozi with the Lions.
Mitchell interesting…..apparently he loves it over there !
Did really well with the Force this season !
…surprised me !
Anyone seen Google’s main search page right now?? classic!!
I really rated Waylon at one stage but his form hasn’t been great since 2007!
Good luck Waylon…
Do we refer to him now as “Walion”
@wpw (Comment 16) : You really rated me at one stage to !
…..times move on !
I’m not too disappointed.
In fact it’s the better move for Waylon, unless of course he is not good enough to be selected for the Lions.
Being a Sharks second string player is still okay, being a Snoil first team player is hardly okay…
As BF said above how can you go from being a BOK at 20 to being deadwood a few seasons later.
Well at least he will get game time at the Lions and we can see if he IS a deadwood or just percieved as being deadwood.
According to Beeld, John Smit has signed with the Lions.
See http://www.beeld.com/Sport/Rugby/John-Smit-binnekort-in-Leeukuil-20100521
@MysticShark (Comment 21) :
Wonder how much truth in that
@MysticShark (Comment 21) :
I heard the same thing so I think it’s true
Who’s Ruan Boshoff?
He played a few Voddas games, we bought him from the Bulls 1 or 2 seasons back
I reckon we want elton jantjes and jaco taute in return for smit
Forgive my ignorance, but doesn’t Smit still have a contract with the Sharks
If the majority of that Beeld article is right then I will probably not be watching any Currie Cup this year as it is going to be a DISASTER!!
So the Lions get Waylon and Barney, and we get Pretoors. Yeh, that’s a fair trade!
Sharks release players who want to leave. Also, that story in Beeld contains no details at all about when exactly Smit plans to join the Lions. Could be after the World Cup for all we know
I doubt if Smit will leave! Why would he want to leave the team that he has played for his whole career??
Unless it is after the RWC as Rob says.
@robdylan (Comment 30) : true, have you heard anything more about ruan? he would be a loss not only to Sharks rugby but Bok rugby too
@wpw (Comment 31) : maybe as a coach? i think smit would make a fantastic coach
@robdylan (Comment 30) : I hope you’re right bru. And yes, I also don’t think it makes sense for Barney to leave the Sharks after all these years but you know what they say about money talking…
Well if the Sharks allow him to leave it will be a huge mistake!!
@war1 (Comment 33) : After coaching the Boks, I think doing it for the Lions would be a step backwards. Then again, Dick’s done it…
Aai klempie, don’t you have anything positive to say??
@wpw (Comment 35) : I agree with you to an extent, how much longer have we got him anyway? Is he not planning to retire after the world cup anyway?
@wpw (Comment 37) :
@wpw (Comment 37) : Rob and I kissed and made up. There was a fair amount of stubble irritation involved.
War1
They should offer him a coaching role. The guy has done so much for Bok rugby and to throw away that much wisdom and experience would be stupid!
Klemps
That is just gross (bad visuals).
All these rumours and speculations has to end, aren’t there any great journos left, ones that actually publish the whole truth and not the bullshit
@JarsonX (Comment 42) : I agree, there is so much speculation. Im gutted that Waylon will be leaving, I think with a decent 12 he still could find form again and instead the Sharks are even thinner at the back. If John Smit has left for the Lions, he needs his head read. With what, maybe two years to go in his career, he wants to end it with a fizzle?? Crazy if true.
Well i say anybody going to a snoils team is
why go to the lions team when at the bottem of the S14 log
lions must be very hard up for a win i guess
The Beeld article isn’t really a rumour, it’s confirmation?
@walter van Lions World (Comment 45) : Walter, it strikes me as somewhere in between. Cronje doesn’t exactly give a lot of facts, does he?
@walter van Lions World (Comment 45) : is that a question?
@robdylan (Comment 46) :
No he doesn’t all he says is “according to Sport 24′s information”……….
If it is true then the Sharks will have learnt a valuable lesson. That they aren’t the only ones with money.
Sad sad news this…
Btw, will the sharksworld login page’s pic be changed?
Walter Venter is just the man we need at the Sharks, he is the one we need to open the midfield.
he has been stuffed around at the Lions, would be good to see him in a Sharks outfit
@FireTheLooser (Comment 50) : you truly think of teh deatail
@FireTheLooser (Comment 50) : Probably the next time we win some silverware. This may not be soon
@Tiger (Comment 52) : I agree with you. I wonder if he’s available…
I think the Sharks must contact him. Het is a much better player that what they have at this moment
@Tiger (Comment 56) : if they aren’t seriously looking at him, then they’re asleep.
Wouldn’t be surprised – he hasn’t played any rugby at the Sharks. Being a pro is about game time.
this is great news for the boks. we don’t have many good centres. waylon played well under dicks guidance and lost confidence when brad left. maybe a change of scenery will do him good.
@Tiger (Comment 56) : been calling for him for a while now.
@robdylan (Comment 57) : there`s a young one who played for Monument High last year and cravenweek if i`m not mistaken. i know he signed with the bulls, but a SERIOUS centre prospect. how`s our stock looking at the academy, anyone with info?
