No Jean against Wales

Springbok centre Jean de Villiers has been forced to withdraw from the team to play Wales in Cardiff next weekend, as the result of a shoulder injury.

De Villiers, named to start in the somewhat unaccustomed position of outside centre in a team devoid of a fair few regular starters, has been playing for Munster in Ireland for the last year, but is currently weighing up his options as he looks to return to South Africa and fight to regain his regular Bok number 12 jersey. The former Stormers and Western Province star is widely expected to return to the Cape, although the Sharks and the Lions are both understood to be chasing him very hard.

In a selection that was originally understood to be without any Bulls or Stormers players, Jacque Fourie becomes the latest player who will face Wales a week after competing in the Super 14 final, when he takes over from de Villiers in the number 13 jersey.

  • I personally think that Jacque makes a better outside centre!

Looking forward to Butchie back in the green and gold!

  • Why is S24 talking the Streamers up in EVERY single article on their site, at this rate the pressure will be just way too much for the Streamers to handle and they’ll fold against the Nulle. :|

  • Silly silly Streamers, Allistair in particular seems to be enjoying the lime-light WAY too much and he’s being quoted on everything from rugby to how the soccer wc has influenced the Streamers preparations.

I thought the Streamers had a serious media lock down? And the Nulle has slipped into the background.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 2) : It is, except the last time he played inside center for the green and gold, they went down by 50 points to England. Would have preferred to see him at 10 with Ruan at 9, but then they dont pay me the big money to make these decisions.

De Jongh is actually an outside centre.

He is playing 12 now because TWG13 is obviously gonna play in his preferred position.

  • Unlike most here, I am a neutral this weekend. Whichever team wants it more will win. I think the Bulls will be that team. But I remain a shark through and through, hence no cute ‘stormer’ nickname change for me. These colours don’t wash off.

  • For my sins Im shouting for the Bulls, I like the way they have embraced Bafana Bafana, not to mention the shebeens of Soweto. In the meantime Cape Town cant find it in themselves to somehow let the world know that there is a world cup taking place in 15 days. There just is no 2010 vibe.

On a Friday maybe some people wear jerseys but thats it. The city has done squat to put up banners, flags, posters etc and get a vibe going to let players and supporters get into the feeling. Cars, busses, bikes are not decorated as is happening allover the country. Hell even Kimberley is decorated to the nines for the occassion. Cape Town is sterile, but I think thats how Capetonians prefer it.

  • Saw a little tweet of Keo’s says Jdv wants 2 million. Province don’t have the cash so they’re trying to raise it thru a third party. Bear in mind that’s only for a season where he’ll play with the Boks and then probably head back to the UK the next year. Not really worth it, if u ask me.

I do agree with you if we were still living in the 90′s, but really the Bulls have been playing total rugby and have been awesome the whole season. We all need to get over this whole Bulls thing, just like the Cheetahs needs to get over this Sharks thing.

I do hope the Stormers make it but then again I would rather have the bulls win it as the sharks have been in the final way too many times before the Stormers without a trophy to show…

Jean needs a wake up – we got a quality inside at the moment – go play for someone else for that kind of Tom or drop your price – you are not a farking mecenary.

  • @Worcestershire Sauce (Comment 38) : I guess my point is more that Jdv offers absolutely no long-term value to any SA team. He’s made it quite clear that he’s only returning to get into the WC squad and then the next year he’ll be back in the UK. For one season, 2 million is a lot to pay….
