West Indies v SA – 2nd ODI

Having won two Twenty20s and the opening ODI comprehensively after being asked to bat first, Graeme Smith won his first toss of the series and opted to stick with the formula.

There are, however, changes for both sides as they look to reassert themselves and rebuild to next year’s World Cup. South Africa have left out the struggling JP Duminy who has failed to regain his composure after being exposed by the short ball. Alviro Petersen, who followed impressive one-day performances against England with a century on Test debut against India in February, comes into the side.

West Indies have finally resigned to the fact that Andre Fletcher is not up to standard at this level. They have tried him up and down the order, with and without the wicketkeeping gloves, but since his last innings of any substance – 48 against Canada in April – he has made 55 runs in seven international innings at an average of 9.17. Shivnarine Chanderpaul is still ruled out with injury, which means 33-year-old batsman Dale Richardson gets his fifth opportunity at this level.

The pitch at the Sir Vivian Richards stadium has come under close scrutiny but has played increasingly well. Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers showed that there were no devils in it whatsoever, particularly against the West Indies bowlers, with their pair of centuries in the opening fixture, so there will be no excuses for the home side’s batsmen when their time comes to chase.

West Indies: 1 Chris Gayle (capt), 2 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 3 Dwayne Bravo, 4 Narsingh Deonarine, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Dale Richards, 7 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 8 Darren Sammy, 9 Jerome Taylor, 10 Nikita Miller, 11 Ravi Rampaul

South Africa: 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 AB de Villiers (wk), 5 Alviro Petersen, 6 David Miller, 7 Johan Botha, 8 Ryan McLaren, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Morne Morkel, 11 Lonwabo Tsotsobe
