Barnes dumped from Wallabies team

NSW Waratahs star Berrick Barnes has been left out of the Wallabies squad for their match against Fiji.

Australia play the Pacific islanders in Canberra on Saturday, with coach Robbie Deans picking Quade Cooper and Matt Giteau in the playmaking roles.

Rugbyheaven.com.au reports that Queensland Reds star Cooper has been named at five-eighth, with regular number 10 Giteau shunted to inside centre.

There is no room for 24-year-old Barnes on the bench. The former Reds star, who missed last year’s Spring Tour with injury, has played 21 times for his country.

Waratahs centre Rob Horne, Brumbies tighthead prop Salesi Ma’afu and Brumbies hooker Huia Edmonds have all been selected to make their debuts.

Two other potential debutants have been named on the bench in Western Force flanker Matt Hodgson and Reds hooker Saia Faingaa.
Luke Burgess has beaten Josh Valentine to the halfback spot left vacant by injury to Will Genia.

Utility back Kurtley Beale has been named at fullback with Adam Ashley-Cooper forced out to the wing.
The selectors opted for Force No.8 Richard Brown to replace the injured Wycliff Palu.

The duo of prop Ma’afu and hooker Edmonds will line-up in an all-Brumbies front row alongside Ben Alexander, who moves to his more familiar loosehead position after finishing the last international campaign at tighthead.

Deans said: “This is the group we’ve opted to go with first up, a number of the combinations are familiar, but the selection template is always a living document.”

In another positional change, Digby Ioane has been moved to the wing, making way for Horne, after playing at outside centre on last year’s Spring Tour.

Captain Rocky Elsom will lead Australia on home soil for the first time in what will be his 50th Test.

  • Huia Edmonds??

Hasnt he been playing off the bench for the Brumbies??

Berrick is talented but Cooper has had a magnificent S14 and Giteau has been great as well.

Barnes can’t even make the 22 because O’Connor is a must due to his game breaking abilities AND he can play at 15 or 10/12.

  • Good team but the backs are so small. I recon if you run at the 9-10-12 axis all day your bound to wear them down. Fantastic loose trio. The Wallabies are going to real contenders this year and at the RWC 2011

  • Cooper had a great S14 and deserves to be in the Wallabies squad.

@Pokkel (Comment 2) : I said the same thing a while ago. The Aussies are looking pretty good and the more time they spent together the stronger they will become. Not good news for the Boks and AB.

    I dont think so hey!!

They don’t know how to play ‘finals rugby’ and their team is fairly young.

They might do well but I would be more weary of France and New Zealand.

  • @Hertford Highlander (Comment 7) :

That is not a ‘form’ team.

Where’s the flyer at 14 (Reds bloke)

O’Connor should be starting at 15 and as you mentioned Mitchell should be first choice left wing!!

  • Unlucky for Barnes but Cooper is the form 10.

@Pokkel (Comment 2) : They may be small but they have more talent than a lot of the larger backs playing for other countries…

  • @wpw (Comment 8) : i have to agree… leaving out Mitchell for cooper is like dropping Morne Steyn for herkie kruger. okey, i must admit, i`m still pissed of at cooper, he was in my fantasy league team, let me down big time!! but mitchell should be starting for sure.

u guys think this is robbie`s a-team?? or maybe an experiment here and there?

  • Maybe Barnes would have a better chance if he stopped letting his mom colour his hair… And it doesn’t say much for his faith in her if he keeps covering the hair with the scrum cap, now does it?

  • @VanWilder (Comment 16) :

I think Beale is an experiment at Fullback….i bet he still likes Hynes, i think he would perfer O’Connor off the bench.

I think he likes his wings especially Ioane he likes that sort of beast. Mitchell and Lachie Turner are pushing hard.

I sure he doesn’t want to play Giteau in the centres.

Palu would be 8 Richard Brown too small

I think he is giving Sharpe another chance. Horwill is nailed on if not injured.

Obviously Benn Robinson and Moore would return to the front row

    Aussies for the RWC

    15 Hynes
    14 Mitchell
    11 Adam Ashley Cooper
    13 Mortlock
    12 Cross
    10 Giteau
    9 Genia

    8 Palu
    7 Pocock
    6 Elsom
    5 Chisholm
    4 Horwill
    3 Robinson
    2 Moore
    1 Alexander

Just the 10 Changes…..my bolter next season Ryan Cross at Inside Centre.

It does however prove he does have some depth !
