So you may have noticed that I’ve been away from my post for the past few days (you did notice, right?) A s is usually the case, the rugby universe chose this particular time to throw so many developments our way that it’s been virtually impossible to catch up with all of them. Here’s my attempt, though…

So the Bulls won the Super 14 again and did so by stuffing the Stormers up front. Plus ça change, as they say in France. Even less surprising is the way Schalk Burger (and the Cape press) have pulled their typical stunt of laying into the ref, rather than standing up and admitting they were beaten by a (far) better side. Back to the drawing board, Stormers – as much as I hate to admit it, the Bulls have emerged, yet again, as head-and-shoulders above any other team in the southern Hemisphere and the last few years of the Super 14 era will regrettably go down in history with an indelible light blue tinge. You don’t have to like them to respect what they’ve achieved and perhaps Rassie Erasmus will now learn that it doesn’t matter how many top backs you buy, if you are soft upfront, you will get beaten. I thought they might have learned that lessons from the Sharks game…

So sticking with the Stormers and WP, it looks as thought they may have landed two more pretty big fish ahead of next season, both of whom are (again) backs. CJ van der Linde might wear a low number on his jersey but he sure as hell isn’t the sort of prop that’s going to shore up the soft underbelly of the Stormers tight five; the big losers here are (as usual) the Cheetahs, who look set to pay van der Linde’s salary all Currie Cup long without him playing for them, only for him to up and leave for Cape Town at the end of the year! There’s no medicine to cure stupidity, as the Afrikaans saying goes. Reports that Jean de Villiers has now concluded a deal with WP are also gathering momentum and we expect to hear of an official signing within days. The expectation seems to be that the Bok centre will be available for the Currie Cup season but again, depending on how extensive the Boks rest program ends up being, he’s unlikely to play much of a role. Juan de Jongh is, of course, the one who looks likely to lose his place; quite unfairly, I might add.

So the Sharks appear to have lost out on the one they really wanted, but look set to replace him with another (sort-of) Springbok inside back in Meyer Bosman. In a move that will see a huge chunk of the Cheetahs’ first-choice backline moving to Durban, Bosman looks set to join Lionel Mapoe in Durban once his contract is up in October, while the Ebersohn brothers are also (apparently) close to signing. Rumours persist about a few more backline acquisitions from Lions country, but nothing firm has emerged regarding any of those.

Speaking of the Lions, the circus continues unabated. We now have yet another coach lined up, with John Mitchell jetting in to take charge of the team during the initial phase of the Currie Cup (while still flying back to Perth every so often to see to his duties there) , only for Dick Muir to take over again once he’s done with the Boks. Mitchell will then stay on as a consultant, before taking all of his new-found knowledge about South African rugby straight back to the Force, where it will no doubt aid the Aussie cause immeasurably. With the Lions rumoured to be losing 60% of their Super 14 group (again) it seems that it’s not just the coaching aspect that will see no continuity. Then again, they lost every game, so maybe continuity is not what they want. We continue to hear talk of a veritable slew of big-name signings, while nothing has yet materialised.

Did I miss anything? Apart from Danwel Demas going to Italy (hardly big news) and Saracens losing the Premiership final (hardly surprising given that their coach was banned from the stadium!) I think I may have just about caught up. Or was there some story about Butch James?

  • Don’t think that Mitchell is going to earn much about SA rugby at the Lions, except of course how not to do things.

  • Has there been any official word on Murray’s departure? Anything more on the Pienaar front as well? I read on the Stormer’s website ( for anyone unfamiliar with it) that Count Rudolf von Straueli had said we’d challenge the deal – was that successful?

A nice, little summary of who’s been signed and who’s left us for greener pastures (with two columns, In & Out) would be appreciated :) Maybe one with confirmed signings and one with speculation?

Welcome back Rob, now get to work :P

  • @Pablo Dinero (Comment 25) :

I agree to a certain extent.

WP have the following centres on their books:

    JDV (a mere formality)
    De Jongh
    Des Fountain
    Paul Bosch

The top 3 will be away with the Boks which means Whitehead and Des Fountain will prolly start in the CC.

Newman on the bench and what of Bosch??

I think the Sharks could do much worse than sign someone like Des Fountain.

I think he is a decent player and is much better than any of your current CC centres!!

He has S14 experience and he is quite quick which is why he played on the wing for us.

    What do ya’ll think??
