Joe Pieterson has called time on his WP career.
Pieterson, who featured prominently for the cape franchise during the Currie Cup and Super 14 has put pen to paper with French club Bayonne and will head to France shortly after his wedding on July 10.
Pietersons career has been hampered with injuries and while he was immensely talented he never quite had the chance to show what he was fully capable of until this year.
At one point he was sent by Nick Mallet to study Stephen Larkham as Mallet viewed Joe to be the next big thing in the Springbok 10 jersey, a bill he never lived up to although he always proved to be a dangerous wing/fullback.
Pieterson made the move on the basis that he didn’t see himself in the Bok jersey even though many rugby observers saw him not far from the Green and Gold. The player is quoted as saying he is alot further from the jersey than most people think which leads me to believe that someone in the Springbok setup may have had a word with him.
Pieterson goes on to say that although he backs himself he cannot see himself unseating Frans Steyn and Zane Kirchner from the Bok 15 jersey(ridiculous comment when you consider that Steyn is based overseas and Kirchner, well…is Kirchner)
His contract with WP only expires at the end of 2010 but WP CEO Rab Wagner has released him on condition that WP get first option to sign him should he wish to return from France.
WP seem to have a number of option to play at fullback with Conrad Jantjies running at full speed in training and Gio Aplon and Jurgen Visser also familiar with the position, his accurate goal kicking will be missed thoughTweet
