Springbok coach Peter de Villiers has selected his strongest available team for Saturday’s Test against France at Newlands.

A number of players who did not feature in last weekend’s 34-31 victory over Wales in Cardiff have been chosen to face the Six Nations champions.

They are Wynand Olivier, Bryan Habana, Morné Steyn, Pierre Spies, Schalk Burger and Gurthrö Steenkamp. Jean de Villiers, who missed the Welsh Test because of injury, has been included on the bench, alongside Flip van der Merwe, who will be making his Bok debut should he take to the field.

Springboks vs France – Newlands, Cape Town, Saturday 12 June, 2010

15 Zane Kirchner (Vodacom Bulls) – 5 caps
14 Gio Aplon (Vodacom Stormers) – 1 cap
13 Jaque Fourie (Vodacom Stormers) – 55 caps
12 Wynand Olivier (Vodacom Bulls) – 27 caps
11 Bryan Habana (Vodacom Stormers) – 57 caps
10 Morné Steyn (Vodacom Bulls) – 12 caps

  • I would have liked to see Pienaar get a start ahead of fatboy Januarie (he’s starting to look a lot like Gurthro Steenkamp…)

I wonder how long it will take before Olivier is substituted by De Villiers.

I think we should win, however our record against the French in the last 10 years is not exactly something to shout about.

This is a pretty good team.

  • It’s quite scary the lack of representation from the other provinces. Even the Aussies were able to draw on at least 2 or 3 players from each Franchise. Does that imply that we actually have quite crap depth?… and that unless you’re in the 2 top teams of SA you’re not worth much in PDivs eyes?

Even Kanko lost his place… and why all the fuss about Butch this last week?

  • Interesting that we have 4 centres in the squad… is that again an indication of the lack of depth in the backline reserves. So we’re going to have centres covering fullback and wing in the event of injuries?

It depends on how the French decide to play. If they play the same way as they did against the AB’s last year, we’ll cream them, if they play the same way they played against the Boks last year it will be a good game.

  • Murray swops Shark tank for Lions den

fallen by the wayside at the Sharks, former Springbok centre Waylon Murray has signed a two-year deal with the Lions.

In an interview with the Daily News late last year, Murray described his 2009 season as “physically and emotionally” draining after enduring an ongoing battle with a knee injury that robbed him of game-time, but said he was determined to get back to his best form this year.

However, despite starting the first three games of this season’s Super 14, he was unable to replicate the type of performances that thrust him into the public spotlight in 2007, the year in which he also earned his first Springbok cap.

The 24-year-old hardly featured in the second half of the season, instead playing predominantly for the Sharks XV in the Vodacom Cup, but has now made the move to a franchise where he is likely to get more game-time.

When questioned about the possible move a couple of weeks ago, Murray denied he was joining the Lions, but in the end the Sharks have granted him an early release from his contract that was only officially to end in October.

However, after five years with the coastal franchise, Murray said he was ready to take on a new challenge and has already joined up with his new Lions teammates.

“I’ve been in discussions to join the Lions for a while… I officially signed this (yesterday) morning and I hope I will be able to contribute during my time here. I’m still young and I want to further myself and get back to how I was playing a few years ago.”
Murray’s arrival coincides with that of Currie Cup coach John Mitchell of the Western Force, who is a good friend of Sharks coach John Plumtree and has worked with the Durban team in the past.

“I’ve met John a few times as he’s visited the Sharks over the years, and he’s a really great guy. I’m very excited about working with him,” Murray said.

“I’ve also worked with (former Sharks coach and now Lions director of coaching) Dick (Muir) in the past, and we have a great relationship. He really knows how to get the best out of his players, and I can’t wait to work with him again.”

Interestingly, Lions centre Walter Venter is believed to have been interested in a move to the Sharks and it remains to be seen whether he and Murray essentially swop places.

  • Div chose lots of players that performed well in the S14 but their international performance is not up to scratch. Guys like Gurthro, Ricky and Zane Kirchner are not on par. Even Wynand Olivier although he had a good S14 does not come close to the required ball spreading inside centre able to give the wings sufficient ball. Hopefully they prove me wrong. Just worried that if Morne battles with his kicking boot we might bite the dust.

  • dont quite understand how a team with Olivier and Kirchner can be called the best but such is life.
Other than that a pretty good team. No issues with Ricky whatsover. The man has fantastic experience and is a mongrel which are well-needed. Better than that other flyhalf/scrumhalf chap playing down in Durbs anyway… ;-)

I like the fact that most players are Bulls or Stormers. They’re the form players in the country and should be given first crack. It also decreases training time as the boys already know each other.

  • @Ice (Comment 102) :

Who cares dude? De Villiers in employed to coach a rugby team, not discuss NATO peace treaties. Jake was the same before him – a PR nightmare but thats because they’ve spent their lives studying rugby, not conversing on camera.
I feel the same way about players and heir private lives – they’re not paid to be saints, they’re paid to bash around other players and run/kick a rugby ball.

When de Villiers starts losing or, more importantly, starts losing games he should be winning, then I’ll lay into him.
What he says on camera has about as much relevance to the success of the side as the colour of Bakkies’ underpants.
Its completely unimportant and I’d rather have him there spouting nonsense but winning than have somebody like Gatland who talks a great game but still doesnt have the results he claims he’s so close to.
