No Brussow for Sharks

Heinrich Brussow has extended his Free State contract by another year, thus effectively ruling out a move to the Sharks in 2011 as has been mooted for some time.

There was apparently a big-money offer on the table from the Durbanites, but Brussow has now become just another in a growing line of established Boks to reject the overtures of Rudolf Straeuli. Both Jean de Villiers and Juan Smith have also turned down Sharks offers in the last few weeks, opting to sign with Western Province and Free State respectively.

Brussow states a desire for continuity heading into a World Cup year as his major motivation for staying in Bloemfontein, although the fact that he has only signed a one-year extension is a pretty good indication that he too plans to move on after 2011. Our information was that promising young fetcher Johann Wessels will also come onto the market at the end of 2010 and may well consider a move to the Sharks now that Brussow has decided to remain in Bloemfontein.

Further to these developments, Sharksworld is lead to believe that the Ebersohn brothers, Robert and Sias, are virtual certainties to move to Durban in 2011.

  • I am not going to say ah well, does not matter…. Because it would’ve been nice to have Brussow in the camp…But in the same sentence, if we can keep all our loosies – is their contracts solid, and they are not planning to move on now – Brussow does not really matter then :???: I am actually more excited about the Ebersohn Bros maybe coming to Durbs…

  • @ comment 1: agree with every word in that sentence. We do however youngsters in the ranks that could do duty in the backline and they just need the exposure. We must stop buying so randomly and management must show a bit of confidence in the youngsters.

  • Its the right decission for Brussow considering his long layoff and his desire to make the world cup squad. Its not a train smash from a Sharks point of view considering the laws under which the game is played now as opposed to last year.

Brussow was seriously considering the Sharks offer, apparently his main motivation was to know what it feels like to annihilate the Stormers.

  • @wpw (Comment 2) : He always said that he wanted to go back to province, and he is going back overseas after the WC so all the Sharks would have got out of him would be a S15 season. It would have been nice to have him seeing as Sharks centre stocks (quality) are low unlike in the Cape.

I do feel for de Jongh and Whitehead who stepped up and played really well who now know that they will be shunted back in the pecking order.

    What do you mean ‘shunted’??

You Sharks supporters are really a strange bunch.

It is OK for YOU to have loads of front row internationals and yet we have 3 Bok centres and all of sudden we’re ‘shunting’ one of them??

Dude, when Fourie joined us De Jongh made it clear that he has no problem playing from the bench as it was felt that Grant would start at 12.

Now that the Fijian has left I am sure De Jongh can play at 14.

    15-Aplon/Jantjes
    14-De Jongh
    13-TWG13
    12-Jean
    11-Habs
    10-Grant/Cronje
    9-Mechanic/Duvenage

Besides, we have Rossouw and Bekker to carry the Bok lock torch for a few years to come with vd Merwe and Hargreaves the understudies.

And that’s if Matfield and Bakkies had to hang up their togs right now.

Lets say Russouw played lock for province without the influence of Matfield /Botha he would still be a standaard lock/goodish flank. Take into account where all the upcoming locks have come from…you can link them all to the bulls(experience) steenkamp / van der merwe / steenkamp (with wp) even Bekker can be linked to Springbok experience with Experience(mattfield/bekker) Its all about emulating in sport(all the good Nz flyhalfs come from Merthans era(Canterbury…carter…that flyhalf of blues). they need game as young players but need to mix with the big dogs to learn there trades…Rugby is a Marvelously simple, totally Complicated beautiful game… thats it! back to the stock market!

  • @war1 (Comment 67) : fair he can enforce more than out other options but we need a old hand at the sharks…Losing muller was a moerse knock really…and the lions gaining ACKERS…IS ALSO a bad oman…3 years ago we had a gr8 platform that could compete with any side
BJ,BSMARK, SMIT, MULLER, ACKERS, AND EVERYone fed of there go foreward…same as the bulls now(the last 6years) and the saders before them, and the brumbies before them…now we have….newbies…building a team is fine..the way the bulls are doing it by slow introduction and mixing with experience…we are just letting everyone go…and starting a new with young blood…crazy if you ask me…you can pick any team around your tight 5. name one team with gr8 forewards and weak backs in history?

  • @Ice (Comment 70) :
Ditto, and look what they did to the much fancied Stormers with their “great” backline.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 73) : though you could argue that on this particular day the Sharks backline pulled up their socks  thinking of this nice tackle by Terblanche – yum yum

  • Boerseun; your CAPS and punctuation are distracting, but love the insights.

  • @BoerSeun (Comment 61) : Ja, but Rossouw is playing the best rugby of his life and at 32 I think he’s got a few years left in him.
