Sharks and Bok tighthead Jannie du Plessis turned into a real-life hero after his team’s victory against the French on Saturday evening.
The qualified doctor was called to intervene to help a man who was choking on a piece of braai meat, as the team were heading for their bus after the post-match function. After unsuccessfully attempting the Heimlich manoeuvre, du Plessis had to resort to sticking his finger into the man’s windpipe to hook the offending morsel out, thus opening the airway once more.
When asked about the incedent, Doc Jannie reckoned it put rugby “back in perspective” when something like that happens and that he was truly thankful to have been in the right place at the right time. Well done, Janneman! If nothing else, I reckon you may have just created another lifelong Sharks fan. In all seriousness, though, we’re very relieved that the incident had a favourable outcome and wish a speedy recovery (with no lasting ill-effects) to the gentleman concerned.Tweet
