Jannie saves a fan from choking

Sharks and Bok tighthead Jannie du Plessis turned into a real-life hero after his team’s victory against the French on Saturday evening.

The qualified doctor was called to intervene to help a man who was choking on a piece of braai meat, as the team were heading for their bus after the post-match function. After unsuccessfully attempting the Heimlich manoeuvre, du Plessis had to resort to sticking his finger into the man’s windpipe to hook the offending morsel out, thus opening the airway once more.

When asked about the incedent, Doc Jannie reckoned it put rugby “back in perspective” when something like that happens and that he was truly thankful to have been in the right place at the right time. Well done, Janneman! If nothing else, I reckon you may have just created another lifelong Sharks fan. In all seriousness, though, we’re very relieved that the incident had a favourable outcome and wish a speedy recovery (with no lasting ill-effects) to the gentleman concerned.

  • It just shows you, chew your food properly! It also helps with the weight as food can get digested much faster.

Great you could have helped the guy, Doc!

  • Dude, Jannie has been playing very well of late and I wouldnt mind him starting at 3 ahead of BJ Botha.

I have been one of his most fiercest critics and I am pleased to admit that he proved me wrong.

I think Pokkel will definitely agree with me!!

  • Aside from the life saving antics – Jannies performance blew me away – i have always though he was a weak link at scrum time, once he replaced BJ our scrum became something that resembled a pack.

  • Played a great game.

Maybe he should play for the ABs given his heroics with the fan?

  • It shows that all Jannie needed was a decent run, he improved massively in the S14 after Plummie stopped the musical chairs in the front row.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 11) : If Chili continues to build on his form and not get injured then Bismark or Smit might find it hard to get back into the team.
