SA Rugby have announced the nominations for both the Super 14 and Vodacom Cup Player of the Year awards. Sharks XV flyhalf Monty Dumond has been nominated in the latter category.

The Super 14 POTY nominations come as no real surprise, with three Bulls (Morné Steyn, Fourie du Preez and Gerhard van den Heever) and two Stormers (Andries “Away Game” Bekker and Jaque Fourie) in line for the prize. Steyn was last year’s winner and is probably a pretty good bet to repeat the feat, although can den Heever’s impressive 8 tries during the campaign may just swing it in his favour.

The victorious Blue Bulls also provide three of the candidates for the Vodacom Cup prize, with captain Gerrit-Jan van Velze (imagine having to learn that one as a kid), Tiger Mangweni and Francois Brümmer all in the running. Dumond, who was the competition’s top points scorer with 99 (despite missing out on two games) and Free State pivot Louis Strydom (second highest with 96) complete the lineup.

Despite the ongoing shenanigans around contracting a Currie Cup flyhalf, Monty Dumond continues to train with the side and is expected to line-up in the number 10 shirt when the Sharks face the Valke in a pre-tournament friendly next Friday night.

  • He is a decent kicker, no matter what you say!

Maybe an extended run will do the boy good. And between him and Meyer, we may see the two push each other for the place.

  • Funny that this article has not seen more action/hits. I feel for Monty, what else does he have to do to get the nod. O well, good luck ol’boy, hope you get lots of action (on the field that is) during the CC.

  • my only issue here is that the coaching staff clearly don’t back Monty t deliver at Super Rugby level. That, to my mind, is wrong, since he’s never been given any sort of chance to prove or disprove the theory, but it is what it is.

Absolutely key, if you ask me, is that whoever plays 10 this Currie Cup MUST go on to play 10 in the Super 15 next year. we simply cannot afford to use a stopgap now and then rebuild all over again in 6 months’ time. So if it’s going to be Monty in the Currie Cup, then it must be Monty in the Super 15. I would have no issue with that, but I somehow don’t see it happening.

So assuming that the Sharks aren’t going to use Monty in the Super 15 next year, we should let him go and play currie Cup for the Cheetahs.

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) : i guess.

But if he’s unhappy then he must go to a lawyer and start searching for some loopholes in his contract. They are always there. :???:

  • Wasn`t it Monty that got us into the CC semi`s last year? Then he`s good enough. I say play him.
I don`t trust this Meyer business. He let us down in the past, who says he won`t change his mind again come July 8 ??
