Beast back in Bok fold

Tendai Mtawarira – the Beast – has been named in the 28-man Springbok squad to contest the away leg of the 2010 Vodacom Tri-Nations. Sharks representatives are otherwise pretty thin on the ground.

The vast majority of the team that stuffed Italy this afternoon has been included, with only Bulls lock Flip van der Merwe omitted – presumably on the basis that a single Springbok squad should never contain more than three players from the same team who all play in the same position. Of the players who dropped out last week, a fair few have come back in, including Victor Matfield, Zane Kirchner, CJ van der Linde and Ryan Kankowski, while Danie Rossouw, initially named on the bench for this week’s clash, is also back.

Not so fortunate are Alistair Hargreaves, Bandise Maku and Bjorn Basson; for those three, Currie Cup rugby awaits. Utility back Francois Hougaard joins Beast as the only player from outside the current squad to be named. The squad is predictably dominated by Bulls and Stormers players, with 11 men from Pretoria and 9 from the Cape named in the 28-man squad. The Sharks have a paltry five players in the team, three of them front-rankers and only a single back in Ruan Pienaar.

Here is the squad:
Props: CJ van der Linde, BJ Botha, Beast Mtawarira, Jannie du Plessis, Gurthro Steenkamp
Hookers: John Smit, Chilliboy Ralepelle
Locks: Victor Matfield, Bakkies Botha, Danie Rossouw, Andries Bekker
Loose forwards: Pierre Spies, Ryan Kankowski, Dewald Potgieter, Francois Louw, Schalk Burger
Scrumhalves: Ricky Januarie, Francois Hougaard
Flyhalves: Morne Steyn, Butch James, Ruan Pienaar
Centres: Jean de Jongh, Jean de Villiers, Wynand Olivier, Jaque Fourie
Wings: Bryan Habana, Gio Aplon
Fullback: Zane Kirchner

  • How many Sharks players who were not selected deserve to be there??
Bimarck is injured and so too Odwa, JP and Adi. Isn’t Deysel also injured??

  • @wpw (Comment 1) : what’s your point? If I wanted to watch the entire Bulls pack and the entire Stomres back line in battle I would have bought tickets for the Super 14 final :)

The Sharks Boks are either injured or not good enough. That’s what happens when you end midtable.

  • Other than Aplon, I guess the Strompies players deserve a shot.

My concern is that knowing PdV, guys like Aplon, Louw and De Jongh will be picked ahead of JPP, Adi and Deysel.

  • Today, Ruan was on the bench in the traditional scrumhalf position. Substituted Habana and played wing!!! And is now listed as a flyhalf……the mind boggles! Glad for SA-Beast!

  • Wpw: when do I join Charles and Papsak-koning for a braai on your Weber?

No argument from me on the form of the Sharks players: we are kak.

Well done Argies. So much for the NH competition being equal to ours.

  • @JustPlainSHARK (Comment 12) :

expect MANY more boggles my friend.

Hougaard at scrumhalf? He played the whole S14 at wing!!!!!!!!

Brian Hasbeen and Gio Aplon the only wings???????????? Expect Ruan to be stuffed around even more on tour. :(

Maybe Hougaard will cover wing along with JDV.
Ricky will start most games with Ruan as cover ()

  • @wpw:
hahaha, in your dreams. PdV will never play Ruan there. Why would he bring in a guy who has made his name as a nippy left wing, as a scrumie? Ruan is there to fill in as fullback (only Krusty there) or as wing with JeanDIV.

  • Both JdV en Jaque Fourie can cover wing, Jaque can be FB aswell. But Ruan is the one that will be screwed around.

  • JP Pietersen; Adi Jacobs; Bismark Du Plessis – They all injured, as is Odwa Ndungane & since we only have 2 wings, he might of been included as well.
Pity Frans Steyn isn’t there; if him & PDV can’t get along now, will he even be choosen when he returns? I hope we have him for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Just imagine the damage he could cause with 60M penalties!!!
