A number of teams have confirmed their lineups for this weekend’s opening Currie Cup games.

The Blue Bulls side to take on the Pumas sees hooker Gary Botha retain the captaincy after leading the side to a win over EP in a warmup last week. Bok lock Flip van der Merwe and winger Gerhard van den Heever have both come into the side.

Blue Bulls: 15. Jaco van der Westhuyzen, 14. Gerhard van den Heever, 13. Stephan Dippenaar, 12. Stefan Watermeyer, 11. John Mametsa, 10. Jacques-Louis Potgieter, 9. Ruan Snyman, 8. Gerrit-Jan van Velze, 7. Derick Kuun, 6. Deon Stegmann, 5. Fudge Mabeta, 4. Flip van der Merwe, 3. Werner Kruger, 2. Gary Botha (capt.), 1. Dean Greyling.

Substitutes: 16. Bandise Maku, 17. Bees Roux, 18. Juandre Kruger, 19. CJ Stander, 20. Danie Faasen, 21. Francois Brummer, 22. Hayden Groepes.

The Pumas have made some surprising changes, including dropping scrumhalf Jacques Coetzee and wing Allister Ketteldas from the starting lineup. Former Sharks age-group players Carl Bezuidenhout and Tian Meyer have been included in the side captained by Lions Super 14 hooker Hannes Franklin.

Pumas: 15. Carl Bezuidenhout; 14. Du-Wayne Smart, 13. Ashwin Scott, 12. Jevon Botha, 11. Shaun Venter; 10. Ricardo Croy, 9. Tian Meyer; 8. Junior Bester, 7. Eduan van der Walt, 6. Corne Steenkamp, 5. Marius Coetzer, 4. Luhan Velthuizen, 3. Ashley Buys, 2. Hannes Franklin (capt.), 1. Dawie Steyn.

Substitutes: 16. Torsten van Jaarsveld, 17. Ronnie Uys, 18. Willem Serfontein, 19. Doppies le Roux, 20. Jacques Coetzee, 21. Elgar Watts, 22. Allister Ketteldas.

The Lions will be captained by Franco van der Merwe as they take on the Leopards. An injury crisis at hooker sees young Martin Bezuidenhout come into the starting lineup. Look out for former Sharks under 21 start Warren Whiteley, named on the bench. Waylon Murray starts at inside centre.

Lions: 15. Jaco Taute, 14. Tonderai Chavhanga, 13. Marius Delport, 12. Waylon Murray, 11. Michael Killian, 10. Herkie Kruger, 9. Jano Vermaak, 8. Jonathan Mokuena, 7. Franco van der Merwe (Captain), 6. Derick Minnie, 5. David Bulbring, 4. George Earle, 3. Ross Geldenhuys, 2. Martin Bezuidenhout, 1. JC Janse van Rensburg

Replacements: 16. Francois Du Toit, 17. Kevin Buys, 18. Robert Kruger, 19. Warren Whiteley, 20. Chris Jonck, 21. Elton Jantjies, 22. Deon van Rensburg

Griquas have named a side that is, frankly, so ridiculously powerful that I’m not too keen to say much about it in the hope that they won’t take any further encouragement. The Sharks are going to have to play out of their skins to beat this bunch, including Springboks in Riaan Viljoen, Bjorn Basson and Davon Raubenheimer, along with first-choice Cheetahs Super 14 halfbacks in Sarel Pretorius and Naas Olivier. Journeyman Rocco Jansen has made his way to Kimberley as well and will play on the right wing.

Griquas: 15. Riaan Viljoen, 14. Rocco Jansen, 13. Wilmaure Louw, 12. Matthew Rosslee, 11. Bjorn Basson, 10. Naas Olivier (Captain), 9. Sarel Pretorius, 8. Leon Karemaker, 7. Davon Raubenheimer, 6. Wesley Wilkins, 5. Cecil-John Kemp, 4. Hendrik Roodt, 3. Jacobie Adriaanse, 2. Ryno Barnes, 1. Steph Roberts

Replacements: 16. Simon Westraadt, 17. Albertus Buckle, 18. Frikkie Spies, 19. Gerhard Human, 20. Marnus Hugo, 21. Barry Geel, 22. Richard Lawson

Hendro Scholtz will captain Free State against Western Province, with Juan Smith named on the bench. Philip Snyman comes in at right wing, while the central lads look more than just a little thin at lock. Hooker Skipper Badenhorst is finally handed the number 2 jersey and starts his first Currie Cup match for his new team.

Cheetahs: 15. Hennie Daniller, 14. Philip Snyman, 13. Robert Ebersohn, 12. Meyer Bosman, 11. Jongi Nokwe, 10. Louis Strydom, 9. Tewis de Bruyn, 8. Ashley Johnson, 7. Francois Uys, 6. Hendro Scholtz (Captain), 5. Waltie Vermeulen, 4. Izak van der Westhuizen, 3. WP Nel, 2. Skipper Badenhorst, 1. Coenie Oosthuizen

Replacements: 16. PW Van Vuuren, 17. Kobus Calldo, 18. Juan Smith, 19. Kabamba Floors, 20. Tertius Carse, 21. Corné Uys, 22. Sias Ebersohn
