Few surprises likely for Sharks

The Sharks team to take on Griquas is likely to contain few surprises, but should be strong enough to contain a strong home outfit in Kimberley this weekend.

The coaching staff face a number of obstacles in the early part of the season, with injuries at loose forward, centre and amongst the outside backs limiting the selection options somewhat. The loss of Willem Alberts and Jean Deysel will be keenly felt, while Adrian Jacobs’ continued absence leaves no depth whatsoever at outside centre. The list of injured wingers is also a frighteningly long one, with Boks Odwa Ndungane and JP Pietersen and Sevens Bok Lionel Mapoe all still on the sidelines.

Our information is that Ross Skeate won’t be considered for selection this week, meaning that Anton Bresler may join Kyle Cooper as the only players in the squad uncapped at Currie Cup level. Bresler is understood be under a concussion cloud, though, having taken a knock during the warm-up game against the under 21s last week.

Probable Sharks team:

15 Patrick Lambie, 14 Lwazi Mvovo, 13 Stefan Terblanhce (captain), 12 Riaan Swanepoel, 11 Louis Ludik, 10 Steve Meyer, 9 Rory Kockott, 8 Keegan Daniel, 7 Michael Rhodes, 6 Jacques Botes, 5 Alistair Hargreaves, 4 Steven Sykes, 3 Wiehahn Herbst, 2 Craig Burden, 1 Patric Cilliers
16 Kyle Cooper, 17 Eugene van Staden, 18 Anton Bresler/Justin Downey, 19 Skholiwe Ndlovu, 20 Charl McLeod, 21 Monty Dumond, 22 Andries Strauss

  • @rhineshark (Comment 5) : he played league for sydney roosters last year and was expected to go to the lions where his dad is in the coaching system but now went to melbourne, apparently he is quite good.

  • @willa (Comment 15) : That’s true. I believe the Lions in the Kruger would like the Lions in Johannesburg to change their name. Apparently they are starting to take offense and would like everybody to know that they have no affiliation to the Rugby team what so ever.
