Swys de Bruin has selected his Sharks team to face Boland in the opening game of the ABSA Under 21 competition, in Durban on Friday afternoon. A number of players who were on the fringes of Sharks senior selection, including winger Mark Richards and Piet Lindeque, have been named in the squad.
The non-availability of the majority of the Sharks Baby Bok contingent has caused a headache or two, but it’s nothing insurmountable as there is a large squad of players who have all performed well on the club scene to choose from. Dale Chadwick and Julian Redelinghuys both made their senior debuts for the Sharks in last year’s Currie Cup, while Jandre Marais, Hannes Snyman, Meyer Swanepoel, Lambert Groenewald and Rosco Speckman all enjoyed gametime with the Sharks XV earlier in the season.
Injuries to both of the Cronje brothers opens the door for Cobus Reinach (son of late Bok winger Jaco) at scrumhalf and former Affies boy Willie du Plessis at pivot. Look out for the fiery Glenwood combo of Sean Malton and Dexter Fahey on the bench, a hooker and tighthead prop respectively that have played their parts in a succession of formidable Green Machine tight fives over the last few years. Three of the players in the starting fifteen hail from the little-fancied Welkom Gimnasium; brothers Jandre and Peet Marais and fullback Wynand Pienaar.
The team will be lead by Swanepoel, playing in the number 8 jersey.
