Sharks player ratings

Let’s have a look at how each of the guys in the Sharks 22 did against Griquas on Saturday. Let me know the extent to which you agree with these ratings.

1) Pat Cilliers: He’s in a new position and despite being on the scene for a number of years, hasn’t racked up much more than a dozen senior caps. That said, the Sharks tight five was taught a lesson and apart from popping up for a good try at the end, Pat was anonymous in open play. 5/10.
2) Craig Burden: Lineout throwing was the best I’ve seen from him, with only one bad miss towards the end. Was prominent with ball in hand, but suffered along with the rest of the tight five in the scrums and the other tighter phases. 6/10
3) Wiehahn Herbst: A young man with plenty of potential, but nobody’s a top tighthead at 22 and Wiehahn showed that he still has a long way to go. Kimberley can be a burial ground for young props and at least we know that this young man will get up and play again – as long as each lesson learned along the way is taken to heart. 4/10
4) Steven Sykes: A senior player in the team who quite simply did not stand up. Sykes has 50 caps or more to his name and really needed to add some steel to a pack that was schooled by the Griquas hardmen; on the day, he was anonymous and must surely fear for his place as his mediocre season continues. 4/10
5) Alistair Hargreaves: Big Al was another who failed to stamp his authority on this game, showing that a few minutes in a Bok jersey against the likes of Italy unfortunately doesn’t always translate into a solid 80 minutes against a fired-up Griquas side. Two crucial lineout steals add a little to his total, but he still needs to show us the mongrel streak. 5/10
6) Jacques Botes: As the most-capped player in the pack, Botes was quite simply disastrous. He is at his most effective operating in a pack that is moving forward, where his guile and ball sense can be used to devastating effect. In a unit that’s being shoved around the park, he becomes an expensive luxury. The yellow card for a punch turned this into his worst showing in a Sharks jersey this year. 3/10
7) Mike Rhodes: One of the few forwards to stand up and make something of his chances, I thought Rhodesie was actually pretty good out there. Took good lineout ball, was prominent on defence and was the Sharks only effective ball carrier among the forwards, apart from Burden. Scored a try to boot. Now imagine what he could do with another heavier loose forward in the mix… 7/10
8) Keegan Daniel: Busy, busy, busy, but where was he playing and what good did it do? Keegan showed some truly sublime touches, but the role of the ranging, linking number 8 that he played simply didn’t match what was happening to the rest of the pack. The tighter game that was needed simply isn’t in his arsenal. 5/10

9) Rory Kockott: Rocket has always been his own kryptonite and if we compare the player who turned up on Saturday to the one who virtually single-handedly destroyed the Stormers in the Super 14, it’s hard to believe that they are the same person. Sure, the forwards didn’t give him much clean ball, but he conspired to make it that much worse through slow, untidy service from the base. To make matters worse, his goalkicking was off too. 3/10
10) Steve Meyer: An average sort of performance from Meyer – nothing truly special, but no real howlers either. A victim, to an extent, of the service he received, but didn’t do all that much to vary the play and needs to improve over the coming weeks in order to cement his place in the squad. 6/10
11) Lwazi Mvovo: Would have emerged as the Sharks’ clear MVP with 8 points had it not been for two absolute howlers; the first, botching a free kick which ultimately handed Griquas the victory and the second a knock-on in the dying seconds that finally snuffed out any hope of a surprise Sharks win. Scored twice, though and showed great strength, pace and, above all, enthusiasm. 7/10
12) Riaan Swanepoel: Swannie was better than we’ve seen him in some time, using his strength to power through a number of half gaps. That said, his unwillingness to ever pass or vary his play make him a liability, especially when the breakdowns are going against his team. 5/10
13) Stefan Terblanche: Another senior player who quite simply did not live up to his billing and showed no discernible leadership whatsoever. I feel for Stef, because he’s being played out of position and is expected to be something that he’s not. That said, what he dished up on the field wasn’t good enough to warrant a spot in the starting lineup, much less the captaincy. 4/10
14) Louis Ludik: Was he on the field? Louis wasn’t up with the pace of the game – this admittedly wasn’t helped by the fact that the centres never once passed him the ball – and appeared to be out of position on defence for both of Bjorn Basson’s tries. Perhaps his injury is still worrying him, even if only psychologically? A class player, but he’ll need to up his game, with so many good wingers due to return from injury. 3/10
15) Patrick Lambie: After all the euphoria surrounding his exploits in the Super 14, I guess sooner or later we all had to come to earth and realise that SuperPat is still human after all. What’s more, he’s still only 19 and learning every step of the way. While he didn’t do any of the basics of his position at all badly (read, he was solid under the high ball) he was found wanting for pace when he twice couldn’t get close to the Griqaus outside backs. Also showed a concerning lack of variety and some poor option-taking on attack. Fullback may not be his best position after all. 6/10

16) Kyle Cooper: I’m going to rate him on the 5 minutes that he spent on the field and in those five minutes he took one lineout throw, which was superb and launched a wonderful counter from within the 22. Can’t ask for much more than that. 7/10
17) Eugene van Staden: Looks pretty useful as a prop, but didn’t do much to stabilise the scrum when he came on and furthermore conceded a fair few penalties. 5/10
18) Anton Bresler: Again, not really on for long enough to judge, but took his one lineout ball superbly and put in a very prominent carry. 7/10
19) Skholiwe Ndlovu: Come on, when you’re brought on as party of a loose trio where the heaviest guy is 98kg, what the hell are you actually supposed to achieve? Skollie was on a hiding to nothing and I’m afraid the only thing I can remember him doing was losing the ball forward. 4/10
20) Charl McLeod: Charl’s play only served to emphasise how poor Rory was on the day. He did everything that you need a scrumhalf to do (just as he always does) and showed that he is still faster than virtually anybody else in the Sharks backline. 7/10
21) Monty Dumond: Monty dictated play pretty well when he came on showed some nice variation in his play, as well as a willingness (and ability) to take on the line and beat his man. Admittedly had far more to play with, given how much better McLeod was than Kockott, but used his chances well nonetheless. 7/10
22) Andries Strauss: You know what you’re going to get with Andries and that’s exactly what we got. Didn’t do much wrong, but then again, didn’t do anything exciting either. 5/10

  • i don’t disagree with your ratings of the players, but i still think that the coach is the one killing our rugby, the players also have to start putting their hands up.what has happened to our so called academy we don’t see home grown tallent coming thought.i do believe we should bring in new blood that can perform that was a disgrace the way we lost that game, also our back line has been clueless since campo left, old hand like stefan should go and we should look at our centers pick a young one and fly half and stick with him.PLUM should go to home he is killing our pattern of play thanks

  • My 5 cents: I have only watched the 1st half thus far and this is what I think. Swannie should do a Burden and become a hooker or prop, I think it will suit him better. All the guys seemed a bit lazy and why should Ludik and Lambie be critisized when our centres, both of them, made their jobs harder for them. I dont think Kockett was that bad, but let me finish watching the game first

I think the Sharks are fielding a team that completely lacks class and game-breakers… they’re on a hiding to nothing this CC

Bresler is probably unreasonably high, but I’m rating him on what I saw of him in literally 5 minutes. He stood out far more than I thought he would. Skollie doesn’t deserve any more and maybe van Staden deserves a point less.

As for Mvovs, come on… the kid was good for the most part. Just a few silly mistakes, but did you see that run of his at the end? Class…

  • just wish mvovo is more eager to run with the ball. he tends to offload the ball after he recieved a kick, maybe in the fear of botching it. i think he doesnt trust in his abilities and is holding back to much. lacks confidence. he did have a hugely strong run at the end, but then he had no choice. development of this player would be key. i would adjust the most players’ ratings with about 1-2 points down. coz if they are going to play at their potential then their ratings would go up to 13 out of 10 etc.

  • Yep… We do have a very talented and able group of players in the squad (with all the injuries and some call-ups etc)… So yes, can understand that we do expect more from them, this game lacked structure, and The Sharks are a team that builds momentum off structure, what is concerning is not the players, but the game plan… Where is plan B or C when A is gone? We need to be more flexible, and we need to have impact players play according to their strengths, Plum doesn’t like players playing like they want to, he is too militant… That is a problem… And the players follow him… Frans wants to play his way, and a coach needs to fuse special talent, allow for some creative expression… Let us see what happens from here… The Sharks are obsessed with structures… Obsessed with structures and “experience”, but that is a very different topic… I still smell a rat in the dock…

You are right on with van staden – like you said “(he) didn’t do much to stabilise the scrum when he came on and furthermore conceded a fair few penalties” – which cost us big time!

I suppose it’s difficult to rate the substitute players when they only get a short amount of time on the field…
Bresler’s rating seemed high though, compared to the regular locks who only got 4 and 5… :) No punn intended ;)
