Sharks loose forward Ryan “the Hoff” Kankowski has been elevated to the reserves bench for the Springboks’ second Tri-Nations test against New Zealand this weekend. Team mate and close friend Jannie du Plessis is less fortunate, having been ruled out of the match with a calf strain.

Kankowski’s inclusion comes as a result of an inevitable re-shuffle following Bakkies Botha’s most recent suspension (nine weeks for a head butt this time). Danie Rossouw moves up from the bench into the number 4 jersey and will win his 50th test cap in the process, the twentieth player to reach that milestone for South Africa. CJ van der Linde comes straight into the number 3 jersey for du Plessis, with BJ Botha again named on the bench.

The remainder of the squad is unchanged from the one that lost by 20 points in the first test and John Smit will need to spur his charges on to a far better performance in Wellington if they are to have any hope of retaining the Tri-Nations trophy.

Springboks: 15 Zane Kirchner, 14 Jean de Villiers,13 Jaque Fourie,12 Wynand Oliver, 11 Bryan Habana,10 Morne Steyn, 9 Ricky Januarie, 8 Pierre Spies, 7 Francois Louw, 6 Schalk Burger, 5 Victor Matfield, 4 Danie Rossouw, 3 CJ van der Linde, 2 John Smit (captain), 1 Gurthrö Steenkamp. Reserves: 16 Chiliboy Ralepelle, 17 BJ Botha, 18 Andries Bekker, 19 Ryan Kankowski, 20 Ruan Pienaar, 21 Butch James, 22 Gio Aplon.

  • Team would look stronger with Lambie at 15,Ruan at 9 and Tiaan or Gary Botha as cover for JS

  • @ruggabugga (Comment 1) : If Lambie was shown up for pace against griquas, Id be slightly concerned about his chances against the all blacks. I agree we need a change at 15 ,preferably Frans Steyn. 14 I think the boks may soon realise how much they miss JPP and 12, JdV should be here instead of WO. Oh yes and aggro piggy at 9 should be replaced.
