WP will be looking to gain some momentum in their fixture against the Lions this weekend at Newlands.Having disposed of the Cheetahs 25-11 in Bloemfontein on Saturday WP play host to the Lions on Saturday at 3pm.
A win against John Mitchell’s Lions would give a young WP side some confidence having knocked over 2 of the Currie Cups bigger teams before facing the newly promoted Pumas in Potchefstroom and then the Leopards at Newlands.
Last years campaign had them facing the Sharks (29-15 W) Bulls (30-22L) and then the Cheetahs (19-13 W) before having a easier fixture against the Leopards before then again having to face a Griquas team who in the end just missed out on a semi final spot.
Coach Alistair Coetzee will look to his pack to deliver a similar if not better performance this week. The WP scrum performed extremely well against the vaunted Cheetahs scrum and locks Anton van Zyl and Adriaan Fondse seemed to be stealing lineout ball at will, Fondse taking one Cheetah throw so cleanly it looked as if it were meant for him.
Coetzee would probably like for his backs to do a bit more but having lost almost his entire backline of last years Currie Cup and this years S14 he will just have to be a patient man. Paul Bosch and Tim Whitehead look like they could be a good centre pairing if given time to settle, in the mean time Willem De Waal will just have to keep knocking over penalties created by the forwards.
This fixture will be played at Newlands Stadium, Cape Town.3pm Saturday 17th JulyTweet
