Jaco van Tonder and Piet Lindeque, both of whom trained with the Sharks senior squad last month, have been named in Sean Everitt’s Sharks Under 19 team to face the Blue Bulls in their opening game on Saturday.

Van Tonder, who impressed while playing for SWD Country Districts at flyhalf at last year’s Craven Week has been included at fullback, with former Grey boy Lindeque at outside centre. Lindeque featured for the Sharks in their recent 80-3 warmup victory against the Valke and also played for SA School last year. Lindeque’s partner in the centres is former Affies schoolboy Heimar Williams, who played for the SA Academy side. Another schoolboy star included in the squad is former Wynberg and SA Academy flyhalf Kieran Goss, who has been named in the number 22 shirt.

One or two of the forwards are veterans from last year’s team, including Maritzburg College tighthead Nick Schonert and open side flanker Francois Kleynhans (the latter from Glenwood). Replacement loose forward Siseko Jafta was recently named in the SA Under 18 high-performance squad. Among the backs, wing Mandla Dube played for the side last year, but for the most part, Everitt has named a reasonably inexperienced outfit who will need to find their feet quickly against the young Bulls.

  • As far as I know, Dwayne Kelly is a Westville kid, so it’s good to see some Westville talent coming thru. Watch out for Duncan Campbell and Khaya Majola next year. Khaya, who made both the SA Schools and SA High Performance team, seems set for a bright future indeed.

  • Went to school with Reef Nakin. A bit small, but strong. He is very good with ball in hand. Hope another MHS boy makes a name for himself. He can play wing, fullback, flyhalf and centre. He doesn’t really have a kicking game, but he has pace, can step and is also a talented playmaker when given the chance.

  • anybody else find it slightly bizarre than Lindeque is now playing under 19s? He was on the under 21 bench last week

  • Welcome to the site, Mark. Lots of Affies boys at the Sharks now. Willie du Plessis is doing well for the under 21s too
